These turbines look good but barely generate 10 % of their advertised output. I suspect the included charge controller being connected to the battery uses more power than the turbine can produce in an average month.
Waste of money, better off with another solar panel.
I plan to ditch the generator and bolt the blades to my own modified smartdrive permanent magnet generator, should make around 500 watts in a good wind.
To those assuming my cable is too light and complaining about tree top turbulence, please read the following to put your minds at ease -:
Turbine has no problem getting up to full speed, in fact I find the tree line ramps up and increases wind speed just above the tree tops in this location, sure there is some turbulence but when I see the blades spinning full speed I know its not a major issue. Cable loss is negligible with such a low output from the turbine -my wire gauge 4mm2, cable length 20m, max 20a advertised output from turbine 20a = AC energy loss of 20.78% worst case scenario with advertised output. Now from testing on the bench at recommended rpm with near flat 24v batt as a load, wired through the reg/rec as shown in the manual and experimenting with various loads including a 12v battery I know maximum output is more like 65w which would give me a cable loss of 3.1% not enough to worry about.

Power delivered by wind turbine is a function of speed squared so a slightly faster wind might yield more power. Turbulences from the tree could cause losses. All that being said, windfarms yield an average 30% of installed capacity (maintenance, no or low wind).

What were you using for a load? If you were charging a 24 volt battery that wasn't completely dead, that low amperage might be possible. I'd load it with a resistive load until the voltage dropped to 22 or 23 to really see what it can do. Besides, there will be a lot of turbulence up in that tree that might reduce the effectiveness of your 10 meter/sec wind velocity. I think that the power increases as the cube of the wind speed, so going from a 10m/sec wind speed to 12m/sec would make a huge difference in power.

TheCuriousOne AC transmission won't help unless a transformer is used to boost voltage, but not worth it for such a pathetic output and likely is china broken or just not meeting spec. It's likely the latter, they are crooks. Five blades means rpm are lower, this means the low speed genset is expensive and large. Doesn't look big enough. Look for 3 blade if you got 10m/s 22mph wind. btw, I'm an bsee.

You can only find it by measuring resistance of the line or the voltage on the generator and consumer, right? As I saw there was only one measurement, which I remembered as on the consumer, so what voltage is on the generator is unknown. It might be 40 volts. It is the same as Chinese 12v charger can give you all 20, assuming you'll get around 12 under average loading.

A 24V battery requires that the regulator outputs ~28 VDC @ 14,3A to generate ~400 Watts. The total resistance in the wires and load should be the equivalent of 1.96 ohms to dissipate 400 Watts at 28 Volts. If you use 2 x 20 meter gauge 17 (1.04mm^2) Copper wires between the regulator and the load, you introduce an extra 0,64 ohm resistance to the system that will steal 130Watts of the total 400Watts, leaving only 270 Watts for the actual load (32.5% loss of power in the wires). The cables would also drop the voltage by ~9Volts, leaving only ~19 Volts to reach the destination (i.e. a flat 24V battery). Such a setup would be less than optimal. The moral is use short cable runs using copper wire with a big cross section.

*1) All small wind turbines actually achieve only 5-15% of the advertised power.* *2) All practical tests show that small wind turbines hardly generate any electricity. And only at costs above 1$/kWh!* There is hardly any wind near the ground. And it is also very gusty, which extremely reduces the service life of the systems. *With solar systems, you can reliably generate electricity for about 3-10 cents/kWh over a period of 25 years!*

The wind turbine/regulator combo seems to be the "Morning Group" model S2-400W at aliexpress. It is stated in the specs (graph) that the system should generate 400W at wind speeds above ~10.8 m/s. The regulator's nominal voltage is selectable 12 or 24 VDC. It seems that you have not put enough load on the DC output from the regulator. If you did, the voltage should have dropped way below 25 VDC, which is actually a higher voltage than the max nominal 24V output. Next time try connecting a battery that is not close to fully charged :D You could try to connect a 2 ohm power resistor and then measure the voltage drop across the load while measuring the amperage going through the wires at the same time.

Howdy. My suggestion only. Throw the regulator at a flock of mallards. Three phase rectify the output and use a car stereo power capacitor to filter the output. Finally use a power step up/down voltage booster and adjust for an output voltage of 14 V for a 12 V battery. During stronger winds the generator output will be way over 14 V. The step down booster will transform the surplus voltage into current. In weaker winds the step up will provide some charging though the generator output is under 12 V. It will transform some current into extra voltage. As said. My thinking only. Regards.

That's not typical for wind turbines unless they have bad blade configurations or pitch. It was an AliExpress purchase so that doesn't shock me. How far is the tree from the house? Sorry, a bit late for a comment. I love your videos and can't understand why so many posters are mocking your efforts rather than offering constructive help, but I guess that's to be expected. I think installing it within a group of trees is a big mistake. The wind would begin to divert around the trees well before it actually got to the trees. So your turbine would never function that well. Plus, you would have a very disrupted airflow. There would be lots of air pockets, which would also cut down your wattage.

Nelson Bomber , I like that you are testing these import products. But I would not recommend putting a turbine in front of any object, be it a tree or a building or to close to the ground would never product good results because of air turbulence. This is why large wind turbines make more power out at sea than on land. Not as much turbulence in the airflow. 12m/s and above is the point to aim for in wind, anything below the generator will just not turn quick enough. That blade design is for whats call clean air, take it as fair away from any object as possible will create better results like high up in a pole on a ridge line for example. I am not say this will solve your issue, maybe have a read up on air flow over turbine blades and vertical vs horizontal. Coming from a engineering researcher who lives in the windiest county in Europe, wind turbines are only good if you have the right place to put them. Other wise they are totally useless waste of money. In my case a 1kw turbine in mind of a field with no tree line produces more than it advertised and it was a cheap Chinese product. The only fault I found if the generator quality is bad so it would not last long. Wish you all the best to get it working.

Measuring the distance between tips of the blads is not enough to ensure balance. You have to Balance the blades After they're setup correctly with correct distances. that means hanging the assembled blade with a string in the middle of the blade axis and check to see if the blade leans on either side ..then if that is the case you have to add some plumb and stick to the opposite side ..there is a video online that shows how it's done ...I've forgot the link.

Yeah a basic mental calculation is that IF a pedestal fan can "screw" through a cylinder of air, giving X volume (swept area) by Y velocity, using volts x amperes = watts, then then to reverse it with say 20 or 30% losses, then 4 skinny little blades, being pushed around by a wind, through a wind tunnel, kind of like, even in ball park figures - sort of guesstimating, a BIG 60cm / 2' diameter pedestal fan will use say 50W..... to blow a strong breeze, then if I was to put that wind turbine in that air stream, I reckon it would be lucky to get 15W of that back out as power.... however if you bolted it to the front of a jet aircraft doing 900Kmh at 12,000 meters, SURE no doubt that you would get 400W out of it then....

With that style of blade,the return is minimal due to rotational torque needed to transmit power. A Savonius turbine is about 40% effective. Transporting power like than,your'e better off controlling,storing,then inverting to AC power,as it "Travels" better. DC drops a crapload over a short span,where 110vac loses very little unless the wire is tiny. I put my panels in the yard,instead of on the roof,and had to seriously think whether to invert across the yard and travel the 110vac,versus 40 feet of #2 copper. We went copper.

If you convert it to 110 Volts close to the trubine, you'll only have 3,6 ampers max and normal household wiring will do ok. In fact, all types of outdoor wiring has significant losses so its better to produce power as close as possible to the point you use it.

I have been experimenting with wind turbines for the last year ,and i will say i thought my turbine was no more than a wind chime until i changed the really cheap charge controller for a high quality hybrid and right now my computer which i am on and the rest of the house is running on only 8 panels and the wind generator,and so my guess is you need a quality charge controller and then you will have no problems. Its easy to get off grid 12x 2 volt batteries 8 panels and a wind generator im loving it no bill!!!

I am using an unbranded hybrid charge controller which will handle up to 600 watts of input from the wind generator side but importantly it is an MPPT controller . My first controller was a solid state controller just like the one in this clip on the floor at 105 ,and now my opinion of these solid state controllers is that they make good fishing sinkers, I will make a clip soon of my vertical axis turbine and controller cheers

I know this is an old video, but I just thought that it sure doesn't look like a very good propeller shape. The blades don't look much like airfoils. Also, whatever the power rating depends on the load amps and those can't really be controlled by the supply side. So if the amps are low then it's possible that the load is not taking enough, for whatever reason. Maybe batteries need higher charge voltage.

the indicated power is almost every time for a wind's speed of 50 Km/h = 13,9 m/s. it is enormous. People don't realize. This speed is the maximum speed of your turbine, if bigger, the controler regulate turbine's speed, (brake function) if not, it's electrical annihilation of your setup, it's overcharge. I believe than if wind's speed double, his power is 4 times more, it's not proportional. these informations need to be confirmed.

The total theoretical power in the wind at 10 m/s (assuming you're at sea level and that's a 1m diameter turbine) is only ~600W... and with a top of the line turbine you can at best expect 40% efficiency.

How much power does a 400 watt wind turbine produce? How much power does a 400w wind turbine produce per day? Is it safe to install it on the tree? Does the tree cuts the wind? Did you solve the low current output problem? How much was it? How big of a wind turbine is needed to power a house?

one of the problems I have is that these wind turbines are advertised by watts. Watts are a unit of electrical consumption not production. these generators are being falsely sold on the pretense they can run electrical appliances that consume up to 400 watts and a steady wind. most if not all consumers buy these generators to charge batteries not to directly hook on a load. they should be sold by how much amps they can generate to charge a battery. DC generators need to be real close to the batteries, long distances of wires can really hamper the voltage that arrives at the batteries or load. That's why we used A/C in our homes. Buy wind a/c alternators not dc, convert the a/c to d/c and the end of the run.

A note of caution about balancing the blades. It is not enough to ensure that the tips of the blades are equally spaced from each other. You must make sure that when your blades are suspended by a string that all blades are in the same plane. Any minor variations in the weight of each blade or imperfection in the manufacturing would make it unbalanced. You would need to adjust for this by attaching small weights until all blades are in the same plane. Using a tree branch or trunk to hang your wind turbine from is not a good idea. This is because the nearby branches create sufficient turbulance to diminish the efficiency of your turbine. Nice beach area, though! Was it Costa Rica?

You have to provide us the material and diameter of the wire you used , and also the distance of the wire. Ex. Distance = 100 feet , Wire Material = Copper , Wire diameter = 26AWG (0.4 mm) , Voltage = 25v , Phase = DC , load current = 1.3 Amps Results Voltage drop: 10.61 Voltage drop percentage: 42.44% Voltage at the end: 14.39 You should not use a battery as load because the resistance of the battery is changing when you change it. Imagine if you want to transfer 25v and 10 amps (250watts) you need a wire fat as you finger to achieve 1% voltage drop. Practically we dont transfer low dc voltage energy for more than 1 to 3 meters . Do the test again close to your house and use car bulds as load .

400 watts probably in a 40mph wind. Keep in mind the power available in the wind goes up the square of the wind speed. 3mph is 9x and 5mph is 25x and 10mph is 100x
@UCreations
@UCreations 7 жыл бұрын
Force goes up by the the square of the speed. Power goes up by the third power. With such a small wind turbine you'll get 100W max at 10 m/s if it is very efficient. Higher wind speeds can lower the efficiency.

Not hating, would just like to know if the turbine is ok or its today with wire size / length etc. Ideally measure it at the turbine end to rule out loss.

The only electronic u should buy from AliExpress is mobile Phone cases. By the way how can you expect 400watts from blades that size.? Besides, the cost of installing wind turbine generator of capacity 1kw or lower, isn't justifiable enough to even exist except for experiments and hobby. Wind turbines doesn't scale up linearly, but exponentially with increase in diameter.
