It's not rare or special. The tree gets some kind of infection and it destroys the wood but makes pretty designs as it's doing it. Not worth $4k not worth $5 dollars.

Spalted timber would lose its resonance. The spalting is caused by a fungus that weakens the fibres of wood.

Beautiful!!! Average out the number of hours that you worked on it then divide into 4000. This is something that people who don't work with their hands whether it's quilting or woodworking or painting don't understand, when it comes to the price of an object that you spent hundreds of hours on. Plus add all the hours you spent pondering your next move. Then again add the hours it took to fix something you don't like, plus add on the stress and anxiety you felt trying to decide if it was done, or if you should continue working on it. Phew that's a lot, for one person. Please be proud of yourself, person I don't know.

I have the base of a massive redwood cedar tree that my great grandfather dad gave to me, it’s about 12ft round, and 8-10 inches thick. I’d love to have you make it into a masterpiece table, by counting the rings it’s between 775 and 850 years old.

I think your carving is nice. I am more in to craftsman style furniture, myself, so the overall table is not to my personal taste, but it turned out beautifully for its style. That top, however, would have made a gorgeous top on a Victorian tilt top table. I love the spalted maple top. Fabulous job! What I would have done differently is leave the dark burls inside the hole, because doing so pulls the eye from the dark parts of the tabletop to the stand and gives that area more depth of interest as well.
