Aureol always was an entertainer. 2nd most entertaining 40 I had in BR days. Probably my favourite in preservation now.

Hard to argue with that comment, judging by these runs at the ELR

My all-time favourite class of locomotive. Used to see them frequently in my youth, between Lancaster and Preston. Saw the entire class, al least all those still in existence in about 1980. That sound is unmatched

I remember coming back once from an excursion/railtour to Edinburgh when I was much much younger (about 13), back to my home town of Cov when in the late hours, we got our 86/87 taken off us at Crewe and swapped out for a 40, which then took us all round Shrewsbury to eventually get back to New St and Cov thanks to a derailment/accident that had blocked the WCML somewhere near Stafford. Could have been the Bushbury Junc accident. Eitherway, we got dragged from Crewe, around the Salop branch to Cov behind a 40, getting back finally at about 2AM.... as has been observed, very entertaining travel, in old Mk1 and Mk2a coaches...

the sounds of these beasts takes me back to being a young child i was learning how to ride my bike A raleigh commando in 1978 right next to guide Bridge T.M.D depot in Ashton-under-Lyne the sounds of these beasts fascinated me and got me into spotting locomotives! Good video 🔈🔉🔊🥰

As a spotter in the late 70s and 80s, Class 40s always a favorite. Fantastic locos. ELR my local railway, only 50 mins away from St Annes on the Sea. A lot of the excursion traffic into Blackpool was 40 hauled back in the day. Beautiful Lancashire countryside. Always a good day out on the East Lancs.

Class 40. Overweight and underpowered. BUT english electric locos probably the most reliable of the modernisation plan locos, and that turbo whistle. SO SO SO glad they live on in preservation.

Based on how it sounds on this run probably yes! I do feel this is my best recorded run so far behind a Class 40, whether it’s the best preserved 40, there is some stiff competition, evidenced here on my HellfireTV channel..

Great how the driver almost brought it to a halt outside Nuttall tunnel on the return trip and then gave it the beans through the tunnel.

Excellent Martin, this is my favourite 40. Although both 40145 and 40012 do very well at giving that "instant eruption of power" that I love about EE locos.

This is the outcome of putting weed in a Tractor,s diesel tank, yes cats&kittens, a Whistler or Super Tractor, snorting smoky whistling beast!!, cannot say that about a skip in a sharp suit.

@@hellfiretvmh Thanks it is appreciated, Tractors, Choppers, Whistlers and Hoovers, all EE products reeking of character charisma !!!. More noisier, smellier, cantankerous EE loco the better, a Tractor starter motor screaming its bollocks like Sam Ryder after a snort of best Columbian wow, 175O EE ponies cough snort ,fart, and bang to life. F--k Glyndbourne Mr Malone, give me a Tractor reluctant to start on a ball freezing January morning and I am a happy bunny.

@@hellfiretvmh It is true ,have you seen what passes for a loco these days?, crap brought from Euronics or Currys, for f---ks sake a class 70 is built of Lego, a 68 from a recycled Candy Washing machine an upside down tin bath and your daughter,s Cindy pedal car . A Tractor and Whistler was designed by engineers with oil and dirt under their fingernails, not skidmarks in sharp suits who put an antiseptic cover on the lavatory seat.
