Would have been interesting if the original Thunder Warriors were put in stasis, a "Break In Case Of Emergency" option. Horus lands on Terra and gets hit with 10000 hard lads. Or make up a few new batches , give them upgraded wargear, and put the older veterans in charge of them.

Loved the story, and your telling of it. Well done. This story always made me think of the WW2 veterans I grew up around. Failing physically and mentally, reliving battles from half a century earlier, finding that their old "battle brothers" were the only ones who really understood. Obviously they didn't go on any murderous rampages or fight daemons, but some of them did have episodes related to PTSD, which the Thunder Warriors' blackouts are clearly based on. Had a great-uncle who escaped from hospital when he was about 90, because he "needed to get back to the front".

The war never leaves you. I didn't fight in anything close to what those heros did in WW2, or even Vietnam, but I was in Iraq a few times in the Marines, and then I worked there as a PMC for a few years. The war never ends, it's always with you, and you will never be that good again, you wonder why you made it home, why you didn't lose your legs or arms but your boys did. No one understands you, and even your former enemies seem more like former colleagues and you realize you had more in common with them than anyone that sent you there. You wanted to get into combat, until you did then you were scared as fuck, but years later you kind of wish you were back there. You wrote something beautiful, and I appreciate it, and I'm sure your great uncle would have as well. Thank you for that. Thunder Warriors, they were the best in 40k. They deserved better. You feel for them, you feel like you are them. They were a light in this grimdark universe, rip thunder warriors

I find it impressive that the Thunder Warriors were still incredibly loyal to the Emperor, even after he culled them. I like to think that they knew what they were, basically monsters made to fight monsters. But they were still men, men who loved their Emperor enough to follow him into hell if he so asked it of them.

Like you said, they knew who they were. Unlike most, a thunder warrior accepted who they were. They were the emperor’s thunder warriors the unification warriors, the thunder oath i serve the emperor, always have always will.

Im not entirely convinced that the TW were psychologically indoctrinated into their loyalty to the E. I always thought their devotion came from being some of the few that could claim to have been at his side through the Unification Wars, and fought alongside him
