Arch is the whole reason I got interested in 40k and later Warhammer fantasy. I stumbled onto one of his early videos - either the one on Titans or the Imperial Guard was my first - knowingly absolutely zero about the lore with my knowledge limited to what I had seen in a few missions of DoW2. Since then I've enjoyed lots of Warhammer-related videos on youtube by lots of different creators, but none hit the spot quite as well as Arch's stuff. That's why after several years he's still my favorite.

He was just a rookie trooper and he surely shook with fright, He checked all his equipment and made sure his pack was tight; He had to sit and listen to those awful engines roar, "You ain't gonna jump no more!" (CHORUS) Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die, Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die, Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die, He ain't gonna jump no more! "Is everybody happy?" cried the Sergeant looking up, Our Hero feebly answered "Yes," and then they stood him up; He jumped into the icy blast, his static line unhooked, He ain't gonna jump no more. (CHORUS) He counted long, he counted loud, he waited for the shock, He felt the wind, he felt the cold, he felt the awful drop, The silk from his reserves spilled out, and wrapped around his legs, He ain't gonna jump no more. (CHORUS) The risers swung around his neck, connectors cracked his dome, Suspension lines were tied in knots around his skinny bones; The canopy became his shroud; he hurtled to the ground. He ain't gonna jump no more. (CHORUS) The days he'd lived and loved and laughed kept running through his mind, He thought about the girl back home, the one he'd left behind; He thought about the medic corps, and wondered what they'd find, He ain't gonna jump no more. (CHORUS) The ambulance was on the spot, the jeeps were running wild, The medics jumped and screamed with glee, they rolled their sleeves and smiled, For it had been a week or more since last a 'Chute had failed, He ain't gonna jump no more. (CHORUS) He hit the ground, the sound was "SPLAT", his blood went spurting high; His comrades, then were heard to say "A hell of a way to die!" He lay there, rolling 'round in the welter of his gore, He ain't gonna jump no more. (CHORUS) (slowly, solemnly; about half the speed of the other verses) There was blood upon the risers, there were brains upon the chute, Intestines were a-dangling from his paratroopers suit, He was a mess, they picked him up, and poured him from his boots, He ain't gonna jump no more. Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die, Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die, Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die, He ain't gonna jump no more!

This reminds me of the first time I've read reference about them (Quote form Shoggy's All Guardsmen Party): > Grav-whats? - Chutes > What-shoots? - Grav-Chutes! > What-whats? - You're guardsmen, you must know what Grav-Chutes are! You know: small, backpack-size anti-gravitic devices that allow Imperial troops to float safely to the ground on a column of anti-gravitic force from any height in a world's gravity well, including sub-orbital heights. > Ohhhh you mean screamy-fally-deaf-packs. Yea we're familiar wif dose. Whatchu doin with em? Cause I know a guy who knows a guy... - They're for you to deploy from the shuttle with. You just said you're familiar with them, surely I don't need to draw you a picture. >What? Are you mental? When I say "familiar" I mean we've pulled a buncha dem off deaders. None of us 'ave ever used one; you can tell, 'cause we're not pancake-shaped. - That's unfortunate, you have two hours to learn how to operate one. I'll assist in your training, is there a nearby cargo bay or lift shaft we can use? >Sahhhhge, the baby Space Marine is tryin ta kill us Sahge. Why's everyone always trying ta kills us Sahge?

Surely a bullpup design for a las weapon, taking into account the barrel length would actually be the same as the long las rifles, would be a great option considering how common urban, mechanized and tunnel fighting is in 40K and that isn't mentioning good boarding actions. IRL bullpup rifles have some drawbacks compared to conventional layouts, but power isn't one of them. Since you still have a full-length barrel, the propellant still has just as much time and space to accelerate the bullet. Bullpups have other drawbacks, like being a bit more awkward to change magazines, being more expensive/complex to make, and a few others that get into the more subtle side of combat shooting, like somewhat mushy triggers and the center of gravity shifting as you empty the magazine, but shot for shot they're just as powerful as any other rifle with the same cartridge and barrel length. And they look cool, which helps even things out.

The _Tirpitz_ was an extremely effective unit, despite never actually engaging any enemy warships. Her mere presence required the Royal Navy to commit battleships to escort every convoy going to Russia, forcing the RN to burn way more in the way of fuel, people, and maintenance costs than that Panzer division ever would have. The concept of the fleet-in-being is a powerful one.
@darkwater7212 күн бұрын
Both the Tirpitz and the Bismarck were incredible fighting ships. If they had escaped into open water and managed to shake detection, there would have been carnage. The Bismarck and Tirpitz ONLY amounted to "nothing" because the Allies spent insane amounts of resources for no other purpose than to take them down.
@Werrf111 күн бұрын
@@darkwater72 _Bismarck_ and _Tirpitz_ were the same as the King Tiger - too big and too expensive to fill their roles. They were battleships without a line of battle to fight in. You don't need 15in guns to sink merchant ships - that's what cruisers are for. Surface raiding was an insulting misuse of _Bismarck's_ combat power, but without a battle line she couldn't fulfill her actual purpose. If _Bismarck_ had got out into open water, yeah, she'd have been able to attack a few convoys. The British, however, had enough older battleships that they could afford to escort convoys with them. Yes, _Bismarck_ would have beaten them, but she would've taken damage each time, forcing her to return to port for repairs and having to go through the whole break-out task again and again. That's why _Tirpitz_ was more effective, despite never engaging another ship throughout her entire career. Simply being there as a fleet-in-being was a better use of her power. If _Bismarck_ HAD managed to break out, the best thing for her to to would be to pot a couple of convoys then scurry back to Brest and stay there.

The Bismarck and Tirpitz at least served to bind some attention and enemy forces with their mere existence. And Crete . . . 42k defenders, beaten by 20k attackers. Attackers lose 25% and end up with 15k Men and the Defenders are basically at 0k effective combat str . . this may be a bit of a stalinian outlook on things but to me that is an outcome that is way worth the investment especially for such an important tactical position . . .

It’s not uncommon for 10-20% of their landing forces to expire *on the way down* you then typically then have these guys behind enemy lines, so now what? Do you have them break out? Do you have them make a beach head and goal for a assault? Do you try to pick them up somehow? There’s a reason the guys the Germans picked were considered a very special type of crazy. The Germans saw their attrition rate and said no more of that. The Americans saw that and copied it. The Soviets saw that and tried to do it without the cloth to slow them down. The Americans though? They turned jumping out of a plane into a art in ww2. There’s a film that shows just how incredible it was, I’ll try to dig up the name and there was a German high ranking commentary on this art that I’ll try to dig up as well.

Just like how I'm between 5'4" and 6'5" depending on what convenience store I walk out of and how much they cared to measure and correctly place the "Suspect Height" sticker on the door frame.) It can "only" transport 14 tons or so. That said, there's a small APC (and I do mean small) called the Centaur that is basically the size of a Bren carrier (or even smaller) that you can somehow jam 5 people into if you don't care about crew comfort. And that weighs only 6.2 tons. I have *_no idea_* how it has almost twice the hull thickness of a Sentinel and is somehow lighter, however.

To be fair, the Tirpitz did, by just sitting in her fjord cause the brittish a lot of headache. Ships that could otherwise be used to better effects in other theaters had to stay close by, if she were to venture out. And a ridiculous amount of time and resources were spent in order to put her out of commission. Churchill was absolutely obsessed with her for years. So i have to say, that even if she didn't exactly do what she was built to do. She still did a great job. When it came to Bismarck. The ship she sunk was THE Hood! The pride of the royal navy, and in a way that the brittish thought impossible after the lessons learned, and precautions taken since jutland. This shook both the population and admiralty of brittain to its core. She also crippled The Prince of Wales badly enough to force her to flee into dry dock. So in conclusion. The sisters were expensive gambits, as all big machines of war is. And even if they didn't actually fulfilled their roles as intended, they still had some success. Bismarck, even in defeat shook the britts to their core. Of course she would have been even more successfull if she would have been able to clear the denmark straight and prey on the convoys providing brittain with necessities. But she wasn't a complete failure. And the same can be said about Tirpitz. Binding up a lot of naval power that were desperately needed elsewhere for years. And yes. I know german warships should be called "He". But old habbits die hard. 😅

And a derivative of their lasgun's design is basically a las-FAMAS in Darktide, and is one of my favorites in that game, though it does annoy me that the only lasguns that are actually full auto in Darktide are relatives of a design that is explicitly stated to be semi-auto only in the lore. Granted, it would be the perfect weapon for the Elysian PDF troopers and all of their boarding actions, which might be where they got the idea. Introduce several novel variants of the pattern, particularly the Mark VI as a las-FAMAS that would excel for shorter duration high intensity engagements. The Mark VI shown in Darktide would probably be the winner of the lot. The Mark IV, which is absent from the game but would behave like the Kantrael pattern lasguns in game, would be what gets issued to the guard regiments for more conventional paratrooper work. Very little cross-training would be needed, and spare parts would be interchangeable to the extent that Mechanicus orthodoxy allows for it.

Someone must have loved them so much that they featured in taros, anphelion, kastorel-novem and mymeara books. Speaking of, any chance they get covered some time in future?
