How to Pick Common Locks Quickly and Effectively

This video covers how to open locks that are commonly found in your everyday life. This video covers single pin picking, rocking, raking, and bumping.
The lock shown is a 5 pin lock with all standard driver pins. It has the KW1 keyway which is a great keyway for those starting out to learn on.
This lock is one of the most common residential locks sold and the principles shown to open this lock transfers over to many common locks that are readily available. Please remember to never pick a lock you do not own or do not have the expressed permission from the owner to manipulate.
If you would like a more in-depth explanation of how lockpicking works please review my video [30].

It also illustrates how the addition of security pins can help thwart unskilled attacks. The second lock contains serrated driver pins and spools. These pins make raking, rocking, and bumping much less likely to be successful and it makes single pin picking the most reliable and quickest way to open the lock.

I don't know if I'm doing something horribly wrong, but none of my locks give me that loud as hell snap you seemed to get. I am in Europe, so do we have different locks here or something? And if so, do you have any tips or experience with these?

Kender Sutt When I was picking this lock I used an excessive amount of tension to emphasize the clicking sound that you are talking about. It isn't always this loud, and clicking is not the only feedback I use. When a pin is set it feels floppy/loose, not binding it is springy, and when binding it has resistance. Increase tension until you can find a binding pin, pick it, and the search for the next one. Check out my Lock Picking Home School playlist, it is ongoing and has a lot of great info for people starting out. I don't have a tremendous amount of experience with European locks but I know they typically have tighter keyways and require thinner picks but the principles are the same. Also in the field many of your locks are oriented upside down for my perspective which makes picking a little bit different but easy to adjust you. If you have any questions or feel I did not answer this will please let me know :-)

How do you tell which locks have a certain keyway? Is there a chart that shows whether they are kw1, kw2 or sc1 or whatever
@HelpfulLockPicker
@HelpfulLockPicker 5 жыл бұрын
Most of it comes from experience but you can find charts online. Many of the Kwikset, Schlage, and Yale are very easy to spot with a little practice
