42LE Transmission (A606) Teardown Inspection - Transmission Repair

Here we see the teardown of a 42LE transmission of a Dodge Intrepid. Is also known as a A606. Here I talk about the basic parts and basic operation of this unit.
Although I didn't show the repair of the issues with it, but the underdrive piston was warped and the input drum bushing was also worn. Replacing these parts and installing a Transgo Shift Kit greatly improved the performance of this unit.

And please don't forget use the bracket to keep hold the torque converter, because, I did not use my first time and I destroyed the oil pump, this happens when you are shaking the transmission to put together with engine, if you don't have the bracket there, little by little the torque converter moving to outside and when you tie the bolts the oil pump's gear destroys the aluminum wall. I am just sharing my experience with you guys to so this doesn't happen to you....

Thanks for making this video. It was very helpful for the solenoid pack replacement I just completed on a 2003 Intrepid. The failed solenoid pack had a date code that was in the range covered by the TSB. I did have to go back into the transmission and correct the placement of the parking arm - the detail in your video at 8:50 helped me understand how to position it correctly. Thanks, again!

Say guys I have a 2002 Grand Caravan Sport. I've changed the CV axles with new ones and I still get a vibration when I accelerate, but non when coasting or at lower speeds. 1. I've changed the Passenger CV seal S-3459 and it helped. 2. How much up and down play should the CV axles have when seated and installed. 3. How do you test it. Yes I need some help.bought a 01 concorde only has 46000 miles (the reason I bought it) grandma's car took her license can't drive no more.seller said needs The tcm car would not go over 30 miles an hr.fliud very clean car in xlnt cond so I changed speed sensors and tcm now engine light is off no codes but making winding noise but comes and goes.when no noise it's fine.but when u hear noise it's in and out of gear. so thinking it's solenoid pack.please help I don't believe trans is shot only 46000 miles

Anyone who still can't drop the valve body out, in most vehicles there is a green wiring harness going into the top of the trans-axle. It should have a red piece of plastic inside of it. This red tab must be pushed out the side and then you should be able to pull the wiring harness off. You must do this to get the valve body off.

I wanted to thank you for getting back to me regarding my earlier problem It took me about 1.5 months to tear back into it today. After repeatedly putting the valve body in and having the same problem, I put the original valve body into it and the "park" worked. We then determined that the "remanufactured" gear body parking rod had a lot of slop to it. We then swapped out the selector, rod, and gear indicator switch from the original one to the remanufactured one and it works fine. Makes me mad that I had it right the first time, but the part was not up to par.

I have a 42LE and I'm losing gears in morning on initial start-up. If I idle in neutral and rev it a few times, I get gears and drives normal all day. I'm thinking pump bushing is worn out causing fluid to leak from the torque converter back into the pan. Anything else it could be? Anyone want to help me rebuild this thing? lol

Mr. Gutierrez, When removing the valve body you explained the two accumulator pistons have two springs each depending on the engine. Ours had two. If we did not pay enough attention and installed without the inner spring and only installed the larger diameter spring what would be the result or malfunction when driving?

Hi, I am trying to replace solenoid pack on my 2005 dodge Dakota 42LE. Could you please help me? I have pan off, filter off (soft hair from ATF+4), and 10 mm bolts from valve body. I replaced the TISS. I removed clip/with red plastic lock, from plug on engine side. I’ve wiggled and pulled (not too hard). The valve body won’t drop down. How does it come off? And what should I do to get off sand (ground) from face of valve body?

(Daughters car) All went together fine. The problem I am having is it is hard to get into park (must "slam" shifter into park) Sometimes it may take 2-3 time to engage into park. Any ideas on what i may have goofed up or if there is any adjustment for the cable. Thx, Alf

Alan Larson I don't know if he replied to you, but you probably just need to adjust the shifter cable inside the car. Remove the shift knob and the console piece with the shifter boot. There is a nut on a stud on the right side I believe. Put shifter in neutral, loosen the nut, then put the shifter in park. Tighten the nut and you're done.

***** you are really very awesome ...i have a 97 intrepid ...had issues removing the cv axles ..the boss took over had a bright idea beating on it and ended up cracking the long shaft outer (driver side) snap ring and spitting out the whole axle ..his solution was jb weld ...after some arguments ..and other issues with the current transmission i went to the bone yard ..found a 96 lhs and pulled the trans was hoping to drive on the current trans but its over heating now a lot with code 74 in the tcm and nothing else and shuts off after warm up creeping at lights ..so i have parked it ..now just trying to figure out exactly what i should replace in the pulled trans from the yard it had 187000 on it so i got a shift kit coming ...am going to order the master kit, and am wondering if there are specific hard parts i should upgrade ...it is a late 96 model trans ...just wondering if there are hard parts one should make sure are upgraded?...even if i have to pull a newer trans to mix and match for stiffer parts...hard to find a good list of suggested items

TheTrifel i was hoping that first gen and second gens are the same minus the connectors ...and your right these units are really not common anymore but i love the car and well im an apprentice so this for me is to learn with and well to make a bullet proof intrepid transmission would be nice, i have no problems with pulling another trans for better hard parts and final drive ratio ...if it is worth the effort or easier to just buy... your videos are very informative and very easy to understand and follow thank you for your time it is very appreciated!!

When assembling this unit, whats the trick you prefer to use on the sealing rings that go on the front pump? I've had issues with these in the past, and been using very tacky green assembly lube, but it is not always holding the seals closed while I slide the pump back into the stator.

I got a question for you. I put on a rebuilt solenoid pack and valve body. It shifts fine, but rolls in park. Do I have the parking rod upside down? The long clip on the rod I got facing down to hook onto the rod of the valve body. I saw a parts diagram where it showed the clip pointing up, but in that instance, I guess it doesn't clip onto the valve body. Do just clip it around while the body is out and flip it around when you install it or what have I done wrong?
