In this video I run 3 factory loads through a chronograph to see what kind of velocity loss I am getting out of my Smith and Wesson Model 629 44 magnum Performance Center 2 5/8" barrel revolver. It's not as bad as you would think.

44 magnum is a monster. I know I have 2 of them 2 inch barrel or not on a 44 magnum it's a whole different animal than a 9mm even a 45acp isent even close .I absolutely love the 44 magnum!

Great video, very informative! I've seen similar velocity losses from 150-200 fps in most other calibers when comparing 2.5" barrel to 6" barrel revolvers. It's a myth, that the snub - nose revolvers lose so much velocity. Thanks again for providing these stats.

Thanks for this! I often tote a 3" S&W .44 magnum and it seems to hit targets almost as hard as my 4.5" EAA Bounty Hunter .44 does. If we're only losing less than 200 fps from your sub 3" barrel vs from a 7.5" test barrel, I'd say a 3" isn't losing much from a 4" then. I feel much better about my choices now.

Just got one of these. I have VZ grips on it, the factory Eagle Secret Service grips didn’t work for my hand. I like it. My uncle and I loaded two varieties of ammo. A 180 grain XTP at 1,120 FPS average (mild defensive load) and a 240 grain XTP at 1,130 FPS average (a more potent outdoors or giant people option).

I’d smack the fool who’s saying a .44mag snub and a 9mm+p are equal. Same guys who say .357mag and .38spl+p from a snub are equal... NOPE. I’m a 10mm fan but 10mm won’t ever be .44mag. It can be a powerful round if the ammunition manufacturer isn’t shy with the powder. I have a few S&W model 29-2’s, 2 nickel plated and a blued one. They’re all 4”. I also run a converted Glock 21 with a G20 5.2” Alpha Wolf threaded barrel, 20-22lb spring and modified extractor with 10mm mags of course. The powerful loads I have in 10mm are in the 700 foot pound range whether it’s 140gr or 200-220gr. My .44mags start closer to 800ftp from my 4” guns. My guns are older so I’m not shooting 340gr +p+ ammo (which are above saami spec I believe) but the 305gr hard cast I have will no doubt take care of any problem I have which requires power and a rifle isn’t available. I love shoot & carry both. 10mm has capacity on its side. .44mag has size, weight & energy on its side. Good test. Thanks for taking the time. Sorry I got a little long winded... just taking up time waiting for 5 o’clock to get here hahaha! Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks for sharing the Information...and I agree with you about 10mm and 44. For bear defense capacity won't be much use because you won't get more then 1 or 2 shots off anyway. Capacity is more important for combat then for defense against apex predators.

Can u do a video showing what the revolver does in the hand when shot, such as recoil and flash versus a longer barrel. I love snub noses but would love to see a comparison before I decide which is best.! THANKS KEEP IT UP!

Thank you, this is an excellent resource. I was thinking of getting this exact revolver but had velocity concerns - didn't want to shell out $1k for something that wouldn't perform past 44 Special +P levels, as the idea is obviously outdoor use. Looks like S&W did their homework when selecting barrel lengths for the PC snubs, not so much it's awkward to carry, not so little that you're missing Magnum performance.

My new 629 2.5" PC revolver has been having lite hits with misfire using factory ammo. Particularly with Magtech 240gr, about 1 out of every five. Even new Hornady 200gr but less. I have made sure the mainspring strain screw is tight, even tried changing the mainspring with an extra I had. But still not reliable. Have you any ideas? Happens in Double action most, but also single Action. Don't really feel like changing the firing pin.

Ahh, the fanboys… A 10mm can maybe push a 230 grain cast bullet 1125 from a 5” barrel. The .44 magnum pushes a 305 at the same velocity with a 2.625” barrel. Makes sense that the lightest bullet had the smallest velocity loss since you generally use a faster burn rate powder with lighter bullets.

@@NYPrepper Right, it is a good cartridge, just not the wonder caliber many think it is. I think people also mistakenly attribute capacity to a cartridge when that’s a feature of a firearm.
