Joe strummer did come from a more privileged background but he spent most of his time in boys schools where eventually his parents stopped coming for holidays and his brother ended up committing suicide on an island by the school. I think that’s part of the reason he walked away from that life. The punk rock cannon came after the pistols clash era. I think the diversity of band members is what helps make great music. If I’m not mistaken clover is the band on Elvis Costellos first album. Love Huey Lewis and the news . Great podcast or maybe it’s just the accents . Heard about you from the weekly planet. Can’t wait to listen to the exploding whale episode!

TL;DR: Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

On American Psycho (lucky to see it being added), I would have emphasised the satirical character of this speech, as in the book by Bret Easton Ellis, it was meant to show how ridiculous Bateman is in terms of his taste: He speaks about several bands in the book, all of which were chart-topping ones, as if they were some refined underground artists only a select few knew about.

@@DoGoOnPod No worries, I don't blame you as you have relied on the movie adaptation; I didn't like the movie all that much as I watched it after having read the book. It seemed slimmed down, as there were even more bands Bateman spoke about in the same manner as he spoke about Huey Lewis and the News; all as stand-alones, not while preparing to kill Paul Allen. If you're into horror literature (excluding splattergore and related nether literature), I would recommend reading this. Otherwise, keep on the good work, I love your podcast, especially the episode on Watergate and William McGonnagal!
