New gun, new to me powder and whole a lot of fun shooting.
Sighted the Pursuit in on the 25 meter and 50 meter targets then move on to the 100 meter target where I got quit a surprise!
I expected bullet drop that didn't happen at 100 meters!
This is a great combination, inline break barrel muzzleloader and Blackhorn 209.
I used Hornady sabots with Hornady 265 gr .430 jacketed soft point and Proline Shooters 240 gr .429 copper plated flat-point bullets. Both worked very well.

Yes it tells you in the instructions to use regular 209 primers, Not black powder primers.

What I have noticed with 209 is 1. If you let it set wet it will pit a barrel. 2. It builds up and it is very hard to remove if you don't get it to down to bare metal between shooting sessions. I assumed it was getting clean because my patch came out clean with gun solvent and I ended up with some baked on crud that didn't come off easily at all, many patches of lead out and that paste to remove it plus wire brushing and it's still not all out. It looks like teflon and it just gets thicker and thicker. It doesn't seem to pit unless you leave it wet but it will mess up accuracy eventually.

Yes it goes hard at the metal if you don't get it all, I haven't had trouble cleaning it though.

44gunsmoke Look real closely and see if you see any black residue, looks like teflon, it's very black and smooth. I had a ton of it in there after just cleaning each time until patches came out clean. And it built up and was not fun to remove. Still working on it with the one rifle. The other rifle had rust and soaking the inside of the barrel with Evaporust also removed that coating (and the bluing anywhere it touched). So I'm done removing coating from the one, the other one I'll eventually finish with by just cleaning it better than when I shot it each time I shoot it. At least I got the slight rust out of it easily. the one I had to use Evaporust on was a mess. But I had shot it in the rain and put it in the gun cabinet and forgot about it for over a month and THEN cleaned it. If I had used any other powder, it would have been destroyed. And it just had some surface rust and mild pitting in places, the rifling is mostly completely intact still. And the breech plug came right out.

I like how the pursuit shoulders, don't have one but consider it. I got the t/c triumph and haven't been all that happy with it. Not sure what to go with. I like the idea of the smokeless powder savage ml II but I don't think they make it still. Their are some custom builders that make rifles that use smokeless powder and accurate to 500 yrds but they cost an arm and a leg, and maybe a kidney and liver if you want the scope.
@44gunsmoke
@44gunsmoke 10 жыл бұрын
This system is as smokeless as I want to get. Smokeless belongs in a cartridge as far as I'm concerned but that's just me.

for 10 times the fun, use PowerBelt bullets and Pyrodex pellets. measuring powder is for the birds and those sabots are pure hell with even a slightly dirty barrel (dirty after one shot) ANYWAY, you can get rimfire accuracy with this gun with either bullet and either powder.

For the 100 yards target, you are sopporting the muzzleloader on the POD using the muzzle...for the 25 and 50 yards you were using as support the hand grip. The shots go in different directions for this reason....I suggest always use the hand grip to hold the gun over the POD... always. I just got this gun and your video is helping me a lot. Thanks.

I've been very pleased with Blackhorn 209. I use it in a Traditions Pursuit Ultralight with a 26" barrel, Leupold VX-1 2-7x33 scope, and Federal 209A shotgun primers. With Hornady 250g SST-ML .45 bullets in a .50 sabot, I've been able to dial my accuracy to 1.5" groups at 100 yards. Through a chronograph, 100 volumetric units (or 70 grains by weight) averages 1948 fps. With that velocity, I don't see the need to load it any higher. This is some serious power and accuracy, and on par with modern day .45-70 cartridge loadings. I do suggest picking up a bottle of the Blackhorn cleaning solvent. Great stuff, I only wish it came in pellet form to facilitate easier, trouble-free reloads in the field.

One last note, Blackhorn 209 also makes a great cartridge powder. There is a lot of loading data on their website for muzzleloader and cartridges.
