Fun Fact: Nike actually commissioned LCD Soundsystem to create a song for their "Nike+ Original Run" series. When it came out that they accepted the offer, they were accused of "selling out". LCD Soundsystem and used all of the money given to create 45:33, which they proclaimed was a track to "help" maintain jogging/running workouts, and by running along with the songs highs and lows provided a workout routine to follow. Of course, LCD Soundsystem lied about this. James Murphy always wanted to make a long disco-opera type of song. He just never had the funding for it. After the offer was presented, James used the funding from Nike to create his dream project and release it with this placebo description to make it seem more suitable for Nike. Pretty cool backstory for this song! :)

The moment the first track transitions into Someone Great, chills come down my spine, and a slight tear starts to roll down my face. What an incredible moment. I can't express how much I love this version; I listen to it all the time, it uplifts me onto tremendously positive levels. This instrumental version is better then the original song, for me: it uplifts me, it's transcendent, it fills me with excitement and joy. Hearing this instrumental version of the song, extended (because let's all be honest, this euphoric moment of a song could go on forever), as part of the larger enormous 45:33 track, never gets old - unparalleled satisfaction, it is purely wonderful. Murphy, removing his vocals from the track, allows this immensely dense track to breathe through its instrumental - all the complexions, the layers, the potency, these sounds seamlessly travel across the piece, and complete and utter emotional happiness comes with it. The way Someone Great then carries itself into the next track with such organic momentum is once again, unbelievably satisfying. 45:33 is Murphy's real magnum opus - what a masterful, beautiful, timeless body of work.

I used to listen to this when training for my first Marathon 13 years ago. I remember the elation I felt when I first finished my usual 10K course before the album was over. I haven’t thought about it in years, great to hear it again. I think it’s interesting how much slower and chiller it is than in my memory. Anyways, thanks for sharing. LCD Soundsystem is simply my favorite band--they remind me of a modern Pink Floyd with a heavier emphasis on electronics. This album specifically has Pink Floyd/Beatles/Daft Punk influences all over the place since the album continuously flows on, experiments with the harmonies, and has a great dance beat. But LCD Soundsystem is truly a unique, creative, and beautiful band because they aren't focused on the commercial success so many bands focus on, their more interested in being innovative (which they accomplish throughout all of their singles and lp's). 45:33 is the perfect example of this because this whole second album by them is about creating an experience with the listener (outside the frame of normal studio albums) which I don't think many bands focus on anymore (like seriously think about how many bands would boldly make a continuous running/dance mix for their second album that is following a successful conventional debut album-not many would)...LCD has proved that they don't care about success, especially since they stepped away from the growing spotlight because it was getting too big (which honestly I wish they hadn't because if anyone deserves it it is them). I just wish there were more musicians had the same motivation, innovation and humbleness of LCD Soundsystem.

+Dmang with lcd now becoming an entity again u are so right.. they have never lost their self. if u look at their website now (if u haven't already), james talks about the new album and everything being about the listener. james has that sincerity and genuine apologetic tone that no other band member will ever sound like. he is very apologetic about the way the last five years have happened. lcd really seems to be doing this for us and not their own gratification or benefit. again "dmang," if u haven't seen yet, they have announced not only Coachella, but also a tour and new album. people that know lcd well.. get that they are beyond an impactful band on all types of music, not only just their weird niche. others though don't seem to grasp the genius. they are now headlining Coachella, which is huge! Still, many people i know have no idea who they are. they never sold out. sold out is such a dumb thing to say. selling out is what every person strives for. to make it rich! we all do that except for those weird bands that actually do it for the soul/passion/love/drive (whatever word you want to use). it's for a reason and not money. they have what most people lack and thats why they get upset or doubt their resurgence. i have followed james murphy, juan maclean, museum is love, shit robot (list goes on) for years but there is something different about lcd. the best way to describe it is people that aren't familiar with music move to this. i have yet to show a friend that does not like AND appreciate everything about this music. challenge delivered! lol (not to say i don't appreciate other music btw)

+Jamie Wilson My sister-in-law (also named Jamie) actually called and told me as soon as James put up the note! I have been dying to see them live for years but I never got the chance due to their break so this is like the happiest year of my life because I can finally see them perform live(still feels surreal). And your absolutely right-for them to be headlining at just about every festival I can think of (Coachella, Panorama, Bonnaroo, etc.) that is HUGE for them. That's like officially stating that they possess a MAJOR cultural relevance!! But yes, LCD constantly is pushing innovative boundaries with their music so I cannot wait to hear where they will push it to next! And everyone I play LCD to immediately begins to move-it is impossible to sit still to their music. And you are right Jamie! The way James writes you can tell he is genuinely apologetic and that LCD put a lot of thought into how to proceed about James Murphy's creative spew. I've also kept up with the other members like Nancy, Pat, and Tyler just to hear what they've been producing. Really liked the new Juan Maclean and some of Gavin's solo stuff! I love that they all have still been exploring sounds in music, but together they harness a sound that is special. It is something I think only a few bands manage to achieve. Pink Floyd always said that whenever they would get together, no matter the time, together they would effortlessly create something beautiful! I like to think that LCD Soundsystem is the same way since they are creating new innovative music not for a victory lap or anything, but because they had music that they wanted to share with others (And let's face it-no one wants a talented musician to be silent). So I am ecstatic that they are returning!!!!!!!! (There's not enough exclamation marks to emphasize how excited I am). It's like I said Jamie-they are simply my favorite band of all time(at least so far) mostly due to their humbleness, motivation and innovation! No other group has the attitude this group has and I'm glad people are finally starting to see how incredible they are!

I really thought that the 45 and 33 were in reference to the common record speeds (technically 33-1/3), but since this was put together for the Nike+ "Original Run" series, I think that the approximate length was prescribed. So, while using 45:33 might be a paean to vinyl, the "intended format" was as an mp3. If you've had the good fortune to see them live in 2016, many of the "missing" material is from this. I don't know that they had any original material for this concert, which I had expected based on James Murphy's rambling post about his decision to get the band back together. (It was same concert two nights in a row at Red Rocks, so it should be the same wherever you see it).

FTR, The Original Run series was released as AAC and CD, not mp3. The frequency cut off for this appears to be at 16kHz (good enough for my old ears). Yeah I would understand what you're saying if I considered them any bit pop. Their music doesn't top the billboard top charts on its release. They don't use hooks and ordinary sounds that pop artists use (even extremely experimental pop artists like Kate bush or st Vincent). They make experimental dance punk music. Alt dance. They are not successful enough as mainstream artists to be considered pop (like let's say...new order once was) That is their genre. In no way is too close to pop. It doesn't sound or act as anything pop. Even if you disagree with me, there is no way in any form of your opinion that their sound would be considered pop when you compare it to what pop is today. Sorry for this rant. Happens too much with too many people and I feel the need to say something.
