Our route along the Northern Tier in 2000 included some stints in Canada, one several hundred miles on the Trans Canadian Highway. During our planning a friendly Canadian emailed and mentioned that the TCH often has a narrow shoulder and that Canada is a country very serious about resource extraction. That is, lots of mineral and logging trucks. The shoulder ended up being about 18 inches where we were. Actually, what I came to fear the most were the old Americans driving bus sized motorhomes.

Hi hi! Thank you for nice words! The trip through Canada was amazing and I'm also happy I did it on my own, but wouldn't do it again since the roads in Ontario are just way to dangerous. Unfortunately it was a big project to remove the break pads and in the end they had to be drilled out so was a bit thougher mission then it looks like. In1998 I was taking an orange juice break at Highwood House General Store on route 40 the highest paved road in Canada. Some friendly Canadian asked if I was riding up to Highwood pass, and said he had just come down and had seen a Grizzly bear up there. A bit shocked, I asked how far up and he said near the top. Relieved, I told him it was 24 miles to the pass and it would take me hours to get there so the bear would probably be gone. Nevertheless, I kept peering as far up the road as I could as I climbed on my Bike Friday pulling a 50 pound trailer. Somewhat past the halfway point I saw something brown and became cautious, but then it resolved into cattle and I felt great thinking cattle and bears did not hang together. On a rare downhill going 20 mph I saw a grizzly by the woods about 30 feet from the other side of the road. He was looking in the direction I was going so I passed him at a good clip. Unfortunately, another friendly Canadian had told me the night before that Grizzlies were the second fastest animal in North America and could run 45 mph. Canadians may be too friendly when it comes to sharing grizzly tips. The short downhill having run out I was back to climbing at 5 mph waiting for a sprinting Griz to swat me off my bike. I’m blind in my left eye so it was hard to look back and see where the guy was, so I plotted on uphill. The 2 lane road had 8 foot wide shoulders with the woods cleared about 30 feet from each side. It was developing a steep embankment down from the rode when I noticed a second grizzly bear. But this one was walking slowly toward the road, and was about half way from the woods to the road. I thought about turning around, but behind me was a griz that hadn’t seen me until I was past him and moving rapidly away from him, that is, until I soon hit the next uphill. Having seen and smelled me he might not miss a second opportunity. The current bear was on a collision course with me. But we would lose sight of each other due to the steep embankment and I hoped it would slow him down. So I poured on my sprinting power and got up to 8 mph, not quite a fifth of the grizzly running speed. I prayed and rode for all I was worth just waiting for him to plant a paw on my trailer and stop my bike flipping me onto the road for his dining pleasure. After a bit I turned far enough to look and he was about 100 feet behind me standing crosswise in the other lane looking around slowly. That was the last time I saw him, I put my head down and kept digging for Highwood Pass.

Well done. Too bad you only had phone quality video - and no landscape?? I am a bit skeptical of the numbers however - round numbers you would have had to have done a few 200+ days to make this happen with very few rest days. Ok Ab to Manitoba you could make time on the flats but BC Van to Jasper is at least 10 days and then around lake superior into Toronto - Mtl corridor that is slow going. Olympic caliber cyclist with support van, that I could see. Sorry I don't buy it.

The record for the fastest bike crossing of Canada is 13 days, about an average of 500km a day. 45 days is fast but by no means unachievable, especially if you spend significant time per day on the saddle.

@@AsplundhFamily No doubt even 13 days with car support , the right bike, gear and mechanical luck and LEGS OF STEEL. Was speaking just to this ladys claim. 40-50 days you still need everything to go right and make enjoying the scenery secondary over speed.

@@register1430 With the right wind, Manitoba can be done in under 2 days with a fully loaded bike by an old man. I did it. So it all depends on the power of a west blowing wind. If you look around the web, plenty of people do the across in that time frame. Unsupported
