the Hanging Fireplace is an Atomic Space-Age affectation. the furniture featured looks like grandma trying to do 'modern' but staying safe with the choices. that hanging fireplace demands tulip chairs and knoll dining table with Eames chairs around a Platner coffee table.

I love modern mid-century decor for its own sake, but it isn't exactly true to its inspiration. I'd call what we have now neo-mid-century modern. Probably nobody back in 1965 had rooms that looked like our present-day Austin Powers/MadMen reimagining. Most mid-century modern rooms back then had SOME modern pieces but also grandma's china cabinet, something cheesy and not geometric or abstract on the wall, and much more subdued colors on the walls and in the furnishings. And unlike most of the rooms in this video, there were lots of end tables and table lamps with drum lampshades. Today's neon pops just weren't that common back then. Also, despite the emphasis on "light and bright," it was common to see modern furniture in rooms with dark paneling, curtains, or even drapes. Elements that were VERY common back then, though, were straight lines, and sofa/couches/chairs that were lower, narrower and had legs. People back then were not as fat as they are now and a lot of rooms were smaller or had low ceilings.

I grew up in the 1960's and 1970's and you are spot on!!!! The younger generation of today does not really have the whole decorating vibe down of the true mid-century modern. But God Bless them for trying!

@@sheiladyck5863 Thank you for your kind words, Sheila! Ha-ha! Yes, God bless the for trying. And I actually think I like the modern mid-century modern more than the original! I'm a fan of color and sleek lines. I'm bored with the sameness of so many things: cars, nearly identical modern tract houses squeezed together on small lots, clothing in the stores. Only the rich, it seems, can afford variety - and many of them, unfortunately, seem not to have any originality.

I recently moved into a townhome that was built in 1963 with definite mid-century architecture. I love it and I'm refurnishing to match the style of my new home, but everything is definitely smaller in scale compared to my old condo, that was built in 2006. The bathroom is smaller, the bedrooms are smaller, the kitchen, the living room, the dining room, everything.
@timward3116 Жыл бұрын
@@newdefsys I know what you mean! The smallness is a challenge. Even in my kitchen, the cabinet shelves (not adjustable) don't allow for a tall bottle of anything. And I have only ONE kitchen drawer! I had to get a small mid-century style credenza just to put my taller stuff in. My bedroom closets are small (no such thing as a walk-in closet back then, apparently), and my bathroom is very small. No closet by the front door, either. I'm not complaining, though. I love the place. Low square-footage means less to clean. And, for me, neighborhood is very important. Of all the places I've had, this one is the most homey. Fits like an old shoe (with my toes sticking out)! Still, it certainly is a tight fit.

I muted the music. Most of these looked staged and not really lived in...totally impractical and uncomfortable. The decorating was lame with little imagination or thought put in to it. The one at 4:40 was probably my favorite.

Of course it is staged- it is called "design Ideas" not hey, look at these peoples homes. Sometimes if you have nothing nice to say it is best to say nothing.

My response to nearly all of these is "Get rid of the clutter." Part of the genius of MCM is SIMPLICITY. Give the eye a few really good things to focus on. Enough with the tchotchkes!

Absolutely stunning. Why would they want to sell it?? I'd be heart broken! This would be my dream home! I hope the new owners will respect this fabulous mid century home and maintain it to the high standards of the current owners.

What are you talking about? Did you comment on the wrong video? This isn't one house being sold. It's a bunch of different houses; this is just mid-century design ideas.

You couldn’t call it MCM without floor to ceiling windows

So agree-thinking of how Officer's in quonset Huts wive's decorated. So dark. This was great.

In the 50's and 60's -- the years this furniture represents -- few families lived in houses with 12 foot ceilings and open concept floor plans. I'm looking a video for those of us who have the updated ranch houses and understand that mid century modern was designed for ordinary post war suburbia.

the only things modern design has added to the vernacular is ''open concept living'' Large Screen TV's and adjustable chaise couches with ottoman tray lounging

My DIL calls my vintage Danish teak MCM decor “early garage”. She’s into dark Victorian mahogany. Yuck.

Beautiful furniture and designs. Could you please list the music used in your video? Thanks!

If you're looking for similar music, it sounds kind of jazzy and reminds me of the band Stray Cats; so that could be a good place to look!

Oh I LOVED this video!!! I am blessed to live in a midmod home furnished with numerous pieces of fabulous vintage finds and videos like this just thrill my heart! Because my home was born in 1959 it always has a few things needing done and I am always on the hunt for new “looks” to dress her up! You offered a plethora of ideas! Thanks!

The furniture is fine but here it is shown in unattainable houses. If these pieces had been staged in ranch houses it would be more in line with the middle class accessibility of mid century modern. This video makes mid century look like you need the million dollar homes with 12 foot ceilings to go with it.

It’s attainable, with some editing. Use your imagination and look for the bits you can work with.
