I've watched several videos on this from others, but you are the only one who explained simply why you're doing what you're doing, and you didn't need ten grand worth of equipment to do it. It's rare to find somebody who shows how things 'used to be' done, the internet is full of people who think they've reinvented the wheel. Thank you for showing the simple way to do it.

Thank you very much. I try to not to make the exclamations more complicated than necessary. I want to make videos that are useful and understandable.

Great vid... I have read about this alignment procedure but this is the first time I have ever seen it done. By the way, I dig that you call it "455 KC" instead of "455 kHz" When I was studying engineering, my instructors were very old school and referred to "cycles per second" and rarely ever used 'Hertz". Ever since I have not liked referring to frequency in Hertz because I think it obfuscates the meaning of what you are talking about. Cycles, Kilocycles, and Megacycles cover it nicely. :)

Thanks. When the AGC/AVC is activated this circuit is actively controlling the volume. The purpose of tuning the I.F. cans is to peak them at 455KC. If you use a signal that is to strong and you adjust an I.F. and it is not on peak the AGC/AVC circuit will adjust the volume and you can not tell that the adjustment you made is not on peak. This does not affect the strong local stations very much, but the weak ones will become weaker.

I use a 0.01-0.047mfd capacitor. It isolates the generator from the radio. RF energy will travel through these capacitors with little loss. You can use these capacitors on both leads, to insure total isolation.

Thanks for your many informative videos. They bring back fond memories of my childhood, when I used to escape to the basement and tear apart old radios and TVs that people had given me. Regarding AGC -- instead of trying work around it, couldn't you use it to your advantage by injecting a strong signal and tuning visually using an (analog) voltmeter connected to the AGC capacitor? That's how I remember doing it.

Hey John, Yes there are two adjustable powdered iron slugs inside the primary and secondary. The coils and tuning slugs are constructed one on top of the other. Each slug has a six sided adjustment tuning hole which runs completely through. So to adjust the bottom the plastic tuning tool is all the way through the top slug. The tuning tool only has six sides at its tip. Regards, Rick

Thanks. After I replace the caps I will power it up sometime in the next month or two I hope. First have to wait until it warms up a little to start getting the rust off with naval jelly. I want to do this outside so I don't breath the caustic chemical fumes. If I am lucky, the 460 KC IF's will be OK.

@HDXFH You don't need an oscilloscope, it does make a nice visual for a video. You could use an AC meter at the audio output, across the speaker, that works really good. Just remember not to use to strong an RF input signal so that the AVC does not activate.
@AllAmericanFiveRadio
@AllAmericanFiveRadio 12 жыл бұрын
@jw228w With out modulation, a oscilloscope may be necessary. Reading the negative voltage of the AVC would work. You would need to reduce the generators output after you peek the IFs, to check the peeks again.

The best place to monitor the output is what the manufacture requires in the alignment procedures. If you do not have that, the audio output would be a good general place to use. You can do a sweep if you want to, but if you do the alignment correctly there will be no benefit.

Rick, Another good vid, but my curiousity is up. Please elaborate on how you adjusted the bottom coils from the holes in the top of the cans. I assume you were adjusting slugs. Is topside access to the bottom coils a design feature of that particular type of can or was it the tool you were using...or an experienced trick that just got revealed? C'mon...inquiring minds want to know. Regards, John

@HDXFH Yes that works very good. But it is a good idea to follow the alignment procedures from the manufacture. However most AA5 radios are simple and the alignment procedures are very simular.

To make some changes I would first need the manufacturer and model number. But 460KC is not far from 455KC. I would first try leaving the 455KC IF on 455KC because there Qs are very high. Then I would change the adjustment on the oscillator to make the dial accurate. The Q of the oscillator is not as high as the IFs because it is made to cover a range of frequencies. Thanks.

The tone could be any easily heard audio tone. The phone company decided on the thousand hertz for trunk testing. So all the measurements were standard through the industry using 1000 Hz. They could of used 400 or 500 or something else. It's just an agreement to use the same frequency so the results can be compared.

Thank you so very much. I really needed to see this. I have a question for you. I was wondering if let's say a radio has 460 KC IF coils. Would the circuit work if one was replaced with a 455 KC IF coil. I mean, is it close enough? Or should if I have a bad 460 KC IF coil, strive to get an exact replacement that's also 460 KC? This is just a theorotical question, since I haven't powered up yet. Thanks for posting these very very informative videos!

Hi Rick Today I am doing my first alignment of a an allAmercican 5 tube radio. In the instructions it says to connect my sidnal generator to the grid pins of the 12SA7 for the first part of the alignment and then the 12SG7 for the second part. However they don't specify the pin numbers for either. Can you tell me what they would be on those 2 tubes. Thx Francisco

Hello, Excellent video on tuning the IF transformers, I was just wondering, you were using a 400 Hz audio signal to modulate the RF carrier, some books that I read say to modulate the carrier with a 1K Hz signal at 80% modulation: can you explain what this means??? Thank you kindly for any input on this.
@AllAmericanFiveRadio
@AllAmericanFiveRadio 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks IKHz is industry standard for telephony. Use a tone that you can hear but as low volume as possible so as not to interfere with the circuit under test.

Why do you place a cap between the signal generator and the antenna loop? Also, what size cap should I use?
@Hereford1642
@Hereford1642 7 жыл бұрын
If I may be so bold. the capacitor blocks any d.c. difference between the generator and the aerial. The capacitor size needs to pass the frequency that you are wanting to pass. in this case 455kHz so choose a capacitance with a fairly low reactance at that frequency. 10 microfarads is 35 ohms at 455khz but look up online calculators or really, in practice have a bit of a guess because you can change the size of your signal at the generator anyway. hope that helps
