I live and work on the side of a mountain. I just bought a sub-compact tractor for hauling stuff and grading gravel driveways --but NOT for mowing. I have learned much of what you show so capably in this video: tractors are tippy. I have wheel spacers in and ballasted tires and I keep all implements as low as possible, but it still gets a bit hair raising sometimes. Thanks for this, it would have been interesting to repeat the process with the loader down and see how much more stable it would have been.

This is my second Kubota garden tractor. The first one was an early 1980s B series. It had bigger wider rear tires. For the last 5 years I have a Kubota BX2230 with a front-end loader. The tractor is top heavy and always wants to turn over on the slightest slope even if I when the dirt in the bucket is kept very low to the ground. But even trying to mow with a brush cutter on a slight slope it still once to turn over. I have to mow my bar-ditch using my Scag and the ditch is not steep. These newer tractors are made for flat ground. I didn't have the tippy problem with my first tractor. A friend of mine just bought a new LX that he uses to tile with. I called him and he discovered he's got the same high center of gravity issue, too. I hate it because I luv these small Kubota. I never had a single issue with my 1980s tractor where I needed to take it into the shop. It's just the high center of gravity these newer models have. I looked at the John Deers. There smallest tractor comparable to the BX looks like it'd be top heavy, too, but the next size up similar to the Kubota B and LX series has bigger rear wheels than the Kubotas. I've talked to the dealer on how to fix the problem. They've looked into ways to widen the track. Because the tires are small adding fluid in the tires wouldn't help much. Any suggestions?
@MyClutteredGarage2 жыл бұрын
If you don’t have a mid mount mower, you can add wheel spacers that can significantly improve the center of gravity. You may be able to add some thinner spacers even with a mid mount mower. I would definitely add liquid ballast or weights to the rear tires. Every bit helps! Thanks for watching. -Ed

Great video! The hard part about predicting a tip over point is there are just to many variables. Weight of load in Loader, driver weight, slope, stability of ground, the momentum of the tractor and more. The momentum is one that most don’t think about. Parked on a slope is much different than driving on a slope.

Well this was interesting! I checked the slope in my back yard just now, it’s 18 degrees which I mow with a Kubota BX going around the hill doesn’t feel too bad. Of course that’s mild compared to some areas we work. But definitely wouldn’t want to run with a loader raised up in the air on that slope.

Thanks for making this video. I'm here because I'm about to receive my new tractor, which comes with a front end loader. I've never operated a loader before & my tractor Chappy has done a decent job in scaring me into being careful at all times. I'm glad you did his Ed. My property has some steep areas that I won't even dare venture but most of it is 10 -15 degrees. The scary part is using the grapples because as we all know they leave stuff hanging so you tend to lift your bucket higher during transportation. I usually end up dragging and losing half of it on the ground that I later go pick up with my quad and trailer.

Great illustration of tipping point. I had a near miss with my old B7500 mowing a small bank in my front yard Years ago. Great video. There are plenty of variables that can change the center of gravity of the tractor. Even on a flat surface if your load is not centered in the bucket, or way out in front of the bucket, you can find the rear tire or tires lifting off the ground. I had one instance trying to lift a rock with the bucket at max RPM and lifted the rear off the ground. Sometimes I think they should offer a lifting class to new owners since they do not have safety buzzers to give you notice of a possible accident. Thanks for the project.

From Australia - Enjoyed the video and its message. This is a slight side track and I'm probably showing my age (65yo) being worried but these little tractors tip over SO easily (I have a BX 23s ) and have often had it on two wheels dragging stumps out of a hole with the FEL. Also I find it quite disturbing when I see operators using the backhoe while kneeling on the forward facing drivers seat and on sloping ground with not even a stabilizer down as I often see being done. Being an Emergency Services worker and attending many tractor deaths over the years I've found safety is often overlooked. My kids are always having a go at me about my safety paranoia but when you spend time with families as I have on so many occasions who have just lost a member of their family due to some completely avoidable incident, paranoia comes easily.

I have a B2650HSTC (cab) with lots of hills on my property. I definitely keep the front loader as low as possible and keep the three point attachment low too if I can. I usually have a land plane or rotary brush cutter on the back and both very heavy and seem to make it more stable. I have beet juice in the rear tires too. I put an inclinometer on the windshield just to keep track of the side angles. I really only feel comfortable up to 15 degrees, but it also depends on if the tractor is facing a little bit uphill or downhill. It is definitely more stable facing uphill with the higher side angles. I have put the tractor on much steeper slopes than 15 degrees, but only facing uphill. I think I am going to put on some wheel spacers for a little extra security. One problem I see with your "test" is only jacking up the rear and you had corner to corner wobble that made it seem more unstable than it may have really been. If you test again, I suggest jacking up the front an rear on one side equally. Thanks for doing the video!

Interesting video with a solid premise. However, a tractor is a tractor is a tractor. We have eleven tractors from 22 to 85HP; turf, Industrial and Ag tires; cast centers, wheel weights, fluid filled or pure air, wheel spacers-no spacers, cabs and open station. A 15 degree slope is comfortable on most our machines. The load shifted and the chain slid to the one side immediately and flipped the tractor over with him still in the seat and pinned to the steering wheel. He suffocated before we could get the tractor pulled off of him. EMTs were on scene in minutes administering cpr. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. That was a bad day. When things go wrong, they do so very quickly and with deadly consequences.We used to see farmers using their loader tractors for field work and running around in the fields with the loaders all the way in the air. Thanks Dave. Haha, I think Siri is single! My weight? Well the answer depends if 200 is high or low. I'd say plus or minus... mostly plus :)

This test was with an empty loader. You would have been flipped over at 15 degrees with a full load.

I think this test is dangerously misleading. Many subcompact tractors will roll with much less pitch with some weight in the loader combined with momentum while under way.

Hi Lewis. It's unscientific for sure. You're right that geography, momentum, and other conditions would play a role. I appreciate your comments. -Ed
