We sailed past you two on our maiden voyage up the coast from whangarei to the Bay in our families brand new traditional yacht same as Vigilant . You were busy picking up the kite surfer as we sailed past. I gave you a big wave from the real trad looking sloop just off Motukiekie island. Hope to see you again.

I think I saw you guys! Were you coming up the bay just on your inner jib/staysail? We sailed down to Barrier Is that night. Been chasing surf down here. Touch base with us via Facebook so we can stay in touch better? I would love to check out your boat and say Hi! Cheer Mick

Beautiful boat. Can you explain why you opted to put the galley down below? This doesn't seem to match the standard layout.
@SailSurfROAM6 жыл бұрын
Arh thats nearly as controversial as the mono/catamaran debate. Personal preference really. I think on boats under 50' for liveaboard use it works better if done right. Our thoughts for Roam were galley down for liveaboard and galley up if you were weekending and booze cruising etc. Cheers Mick

Although Cats in General have that stability feature and are roomy, I've seen a few which were provisioned heavily, for remote blue water sailing, and ended up too heavy to really show a advantage in the speed area, compared to a good monohul like an Amel. And they generally aren't as sturdy, and seem to have engine problems, times two. They seem best for hopping around the Caribbean and short sails.
@SailSurfROAM6 жыл бұрын
Cheers for comment, I'd say you need to make sure you are comparing apples with apples etc, The Amel is a purpose bluewater cruiser designed to be one from scratch so you need to compare with a catamaran designed purely for offshore cursing and not coastal/charter work. One of the best life long real world accounts of experience with both is this podcast by 59 North that Andy Schell with Rick and Julie Palm. Check it out and I would be keen to hear your thoughts www.59-north.com/onthewindpodcast/2016/1/14/rick-julie-palm

Thanks , and to be sure you understand, going from what I've seen from a truly experienced couch sailing perspective. I will check out this info . I've only seen (from my beautiful couch haha) a cat designed for speed, rather than cruising blue water. That would be an interesting channel, a blue water Cat ? Specifically designed for blue water ? It would be cool also to compare the weight of cargo being carried, the additional little gadgets like 5k or more generators , fresh water tank capacity, and whatever else is heavy, and compare performance. One company wanted to demo their cat on another channel but was very specific re what they wanted the cruiser's to carry . Seems like cheating to me. But, I'll check out your info. thanks.
@californiakayaker6 жыл бұрын
Well, I hve to say, your referral to that boat was definitely not for an Offshore cruising boat, but a offshore racing cat. What I am saying is that the typical offshore cat, set up for blue water, will not even come close to the cruising speed were used to seeing for cats if PROVISIONED for blue water cruising (because cats do not fly unluess light) . . That is all that I am saying, no referrals to Bluewater racing cats is warranted. This is an honest comparison. I won't be sad to have and live on/do passages on a monohul if I get the chance, especially one with a better blue water keel. The upwind details alone sell it to me. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKKvYmt6mN6XpJIm22s

Any idea what an auto fire extinguisher costs for each of the fuel storage lockers?
@SailSurfROAM6 жыл бұрын
No idea. You wouldn't need to have individual systems though. A single CO2 systems that was plumbed to douse all compartments would be possible. A manual system would be fairly straight fwd but an auto one with sensors and self activation would be more complex and $$$ Do you know much about these systems? Regards Mick
@justincutts95296 жыл бұрын
Sail Surf ROAM. Im a ME and a Naval Arch but never worked much in maritime statutory issues. I would have to think a basic auto CO2 system to handle a few lockers for a DIYer (assuming controls and such are easy to procure, plug and play) could be done pretty cheap. Whether an insurance agent or local flag say for charter would accept could be a big difference in cost. Ardino sites may have something for the controls. Im guessing the cheapest for 2 fwd lockers under your mast, Ardino boards sensors, step from12v to say 5v and 20 lbs CO2 for $478 us. That's with you doing all the work. Did I hear the winner gets an all expense week for two on the reef for exact guesses? ;) Love the vlog. Weren't yall originally set out to do a movie?

She’s a 30kn Cat easily. But she needs an OCTender to polish her off 👌🤙
@drx1xym1546 жыл бұрын
IDK, 30kn is damn fast - in some wave condition the boats go under or even flip .... I think they love the cursing aspect, but yeah, she can be fast (prob 20kn or less is safe in most sea states).
@SailSurfROAM6 жыл бұрын
Well the OC Tender is on order as of a week ago actually! The boat could surf into the high 20's in the right conditions but you couldn't get that fast on flat water I dont think. Flat water reaching with 1 or 2 reefs and the genoa we have topped out at 17kkn. It will sustain 14-16 no worries. Offshore it surfs very easy so we usually manage sail area when the conditions are aft of the beam to keep the surfs not too extreme. 16-18kn surfs are pretty mellow if the wave period is right. Once you start surfing into the 20's its less comfortable so we dont tend to do that too much as it gets real hard to sleep on passage etc. Its pretty rare for the boat not to find a nice wave here and there and get to the end of a passage without the MaxSOG having touched 20kn but we are really aiming for 8-10 knot average as many days as possible and take it easy. Thats the thing with the lighter cats that most people don't seem to realize. You can make good passage speed on very small sail areas and keep the loads and stress low. We are yet to clock a legitimate 250Nm day waypoint to waypoint but almost all our average SOG for passages end up 7-9kn and very minimal motoring time. Hey Zone TV get in touch with us at sailsurfroam@gmail.com while we are still in NZ. Cheers Mick

Sunil Rao read the captions
@drx1xym1546 жыл бұрын
so this may help, yet cats have two hulls, what you can do with this is make an owners hull - with one cabin (room) and a better head (toilet) shower, wash room, etc... and then have guests in the other hull - with a two cabin layout ... there are a variety of options. the helms (wheels - which turn the boat) are good, protected and offer visibility of the permitter of the boat, mast, etc... -- you can have two on the helms, if the weather is bad or there are other problems (or someone is learning - or if someone is very tired - likely due to auto pilot going out or other issues - again bad weather). This boat is awesome, yet I would rather the kitchen (or galley) be in the main saloon, along with the common living space and navigation. to each his or her own.
@SailSurfROAM6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sunil We just intended to make a quick, fast paced punchy little tour. As my mate said the captions are all there so maybe just pause it here and there if you want a better look at something. It would be a long video to go over each space in detail but if you wanted to know more on anything in particular let us know and I would be happy yo help you. sailsurfroam@gmail.com drx1 you know your stuff! Really appreciate you taking the time to chip in with your knowledge. We went "galley down" to maximise the living space in the salon for dining and lounging. We have tried to minimize the drawbacks of separating the galley from the social space by opening it right up so the salon and the port hull are one space as much as possible. Conversely on the starboard hull we have added false bulkheads to extend and enclose the cabins to maximise the private space. We also went over the top with the BBQ and added an outdoor sink so we have some of the best of both worlds ;) We think it worked out well. For a 4 cabin layout you would likely need to go "galley up" as you would need to have heads central in the hulls or you end up having to go through someone else's cabin to get to the toilet etc. Thats boats. Not one to suit everybody and every one a string of compromises and priorities. Cheers Mick
@whereswaldo11916 жыл бұрын
drx1 xym Before I owned a boat I thought galley up was the only way to go. The problem is the space in the mid section of each hull does not suit many uses, particularly in a boat with narrow hulls. One use that works well in the narrow width is a galley. If you put the galley up what would you use that space for. We have galley down starboard and a work bench port but if the galley were up it would be a waste of space because there isn't much use for that space where the galley was below.

Hi Kristen, oh no we are just updating some dead links on our website and getting all our clips in one place rather than trying to manage KZbin and Vimeo. 40' hey? Stern Extensions? Every cat could do with another couple of foot on the sterns I reckon haha Cheers Mick
@highvibe48396 жыл бұрын
Sail Surf ROAM your quick Mick, I said 40ft, I guess it would be with the extension thingy pole out front from the catamaran, so yes it is only a 38 spirited model, we purchased on the Gold Coast, built by a guy named Jeff in Harvey Bay, originally called Ice, we changed the name, not appropriate these days! we also had another spirited 38 opposite us called Bush Spirit, they said they were part of a syndicate when building their cat. They had lots of information on whose who etc, I was too afraid to ask any questions about our cat, as ours was a first built demo for Craig Schonning, there's things that could have been done better, anyway we love it, just have to throw more dollars at it for some future repairs & alterations to suit us.. Keep up the good work & don't be a slave to KZbin, enjoy the freedom! ⛵️🌺
