Tossa de Mar, Girona, Besalu & Callela de Palafrugell... we explored some of this Catalan region's BEST towns in just 2 days in December. Driving north from Barcelona, we started our road trip in the beach towns, spending the day walking through the historical walled city of Tossa de Mar and admiring the cobbled streets and charming sea views.
We then continued to neighboring Palafrugell, to breathe in more Mediterranean air with a coastal walk.
The majority of our time was in the bustling, medieval city of Girona, and we truly fell in love with it! The old city was magical with its local boutiques, cute cafes, bookshops, Girona crafts and excellent food. We even were able to enjoy many of the locations filmed in Season 6 of Game of Thrones! For any GOT fans, you'll love seeing the Sept of Baelor and the steps that Arya ran down in Braavos.
I particuarly loved exploring the Girona city walls and gardens, which offered stunning views of the Pyrenees. We also stepped inside the Arab Baths, a well preserved Romanesque public bathhouse that was a step back in time.
Our last stop before our return to Barcelona, was a morning in Besalu. This fairytale city is postcard worthy with it's arched bridge and tower. Plus there are cute shops and restaurants to relax in as you wander this tiny village.
After falling in love with Costa Brava in the winter, I can only imagine how amazing it would be in summer!

That's a beautiful part of Spain. Nice mix from the beaches to castles.

I've never been to Spain; maybe some day. I'm fascinated with the Basque people of the Pyrenees area. I wonder how the Spanish economy is doing nowadays. You two make a beautiful couple. Best wishes.

Do you have the contact info of the guide you used in Girona? Would you recommend renting a car in Barcleona, the driving the route you took, in one day? :-)

Hi Kelley, Ouch, you really did butcher the pronunciation of Calella de Palafrugell. I'm an American and my wife is from that town. But I'm glad you got to experience that lovely trail from Calella to Llafranc. C'mon back to Begur in summer where we have a place there.

George you are so lucky to have a place there. My dream should I ever be lucky enough to win any money has always been to buy a place in the old town of Pals and relax in the sea on the cobbled beach of Begur....I can always dream...

Indeed Bill. Pals is fantastic. I always find myself there for the Xmas production they put on there. Hard for me to pick a favourite town as so many of the towns are amazing. I do think Begur is very unique with its relatively high elevation. I really love Peratallada too. It's a great area of the world!

Hi Kelley I realise there are pronunciation difference between American English and British English but you have made a couple of errors Costa is not said as Coasta is like Costco....Tossa is not Toaster....its like 'toss' a ball, and Calella is pronounced Caleya. I realise I might sound a bit pernickety but travellers (British spelling) might want to know this.....also Girona ia actually pronounced as Hirona by the locals. Best Wishes Bill
