What the 49ers defense might look like under new DC Nick Sorensen and AHC Brandon Staley

Demico Ryans did not have a DC experience and he did okay. The amnesia of people that just want to make a negative point.

Good observation. At some point, EVERY Defensive Coordinator did not have any DC experience... until they did after they became one.

@@GopherBaroque61 I believe Robert Saleh was hired by the 49ers as a linebacker coach from Jaguars without a DC experience. IMO, they are 2 for 2 finding those diamonds in the rough.

Wilks dismissal had nothing to do with the Super Bowl. He lost track of the need to stop the run. Where he lost it was having Fred covering the deep post rather than plugging the A gap. He should have been functionally demoted when they brought him down from the booth. The new combo approach was just what I suggested two weeks ago. Unfortunately I was envisioning Bellichek which it turns out wasn’t in the cards. Still giving Sorensen an experienced mentor could have real benefits, and allow Staley to reestablish himself.

@@megilacuttyjones735 I wouldn't say VERY good but, he's no chump either. I envision Staley being used to breakdown opposition, and identify areas to exploit. Sorenson working principally with the assistants, and setting up depth-charts, then working with Staley to develop the weekly game-plan.
@justinah74003 ай бұрын
Staley will be a great asset for Sorensen coming up with game plans against our opponents, he is very good at identifying offensive vulnerabilities and how to exploit them. He's also very good at maximizing individual players unique talents, how to use players in position to maximize their skill sets, instead of what WILKS did with our LB's for example.

Im not sure it works. The 49ers need somebody like Ryans and Saleh were. The 49er players feed off their emotional side, its more than just great play calling and talent. Ulbrich would of been the perfect fit but Hopefully Sorensen can bring that same type of energy that Ryans and Saleh had

All Nick really needs to do is return to with the fundamentals of Robert and Meco of stopping the run first, getting pressure with the rush and marrying coverage to it. Now that we have a good QB, that would have been enough to win the past two Super Bowls we were in. Staley can help with scheme and also help teach Nick how to DC.

I think this is brilliant. Did you really think that we were going to land Bill B. I don’t think the Niners were ever serious about hiring him. It was tough enough going through last year with all the Brock BS.

Staley not working out as head coach, is no different than when teh following who were head coaches: Schwartz, Fassel, Fangio, Bradley, Morris, and Flores. Staley had a reputation as being prickly, nobody is more prickly than Shanny, I'm confident Staley's ego will not get too far.

It's cheaper because 49ers just have to play out his existing contract with sorenson and don't have to pay up front money. And if he works out then it benefits nick because he can ask his price. This leaves cap space initially for 2024 season

So, Staley is supposed to be the defensive Yoda to Sorensen’s Skywalker? Sorensen doesn’t have any defensive play calling experience, so ‘9ers are trying to win a SB with a rookie DC. His weekly turnover presentations make him sound like a highlight reel guy, not a play-by-play in the moment DC. His QB/DB/special teams experience isn’t going to help stop the run, may not even help rush the passer. Staley’s cloud coverage schemes aren’t going to help stop the run or rush the passer. Sounds like another Wilks 2.0 year with good coverage, coverage sacks, soft zone, not much pressure, weak against the run. Dave Merritt would’ve been better. I know he doesn’t have much respect for Kyle since he’s a Chiefs’ defensive coach, but he has 5 SB rings, played pro as a LB, they run a 4-3, has inside intel on how the Chiefs were stopping the ‘9ers offense, and on how to stop Mahomes. He also learned under Spags so he could’ve brought some disguised blitzes against the run and pass. They’re professionals, I think Merritt could’ve worked with Kyle. Hope the players can make up for the deficiencies in the coaching staff.
