Pearsall replacing Deebo Green replacing Ward Puni replacing Banks or Feliciano Mustapha replacing Hufanga Guerendo replacing Mitchell or CMC That’s what it feels like to me… I think they will pay dearly for not addressing the OT position (McKivitz sucks and Trent likely to retire after 2024). Love the Pearsall pick. Strong hands, great route runner, fast, he's actually slightly taller than aiyuk and deebo. So he's not small. This was a pick looking at after next year and my guess is they wanted that 5th year option they. I give this a B+ grade. No way with this roster we can pay both aiyuk and deebo big money in 2025. Round 2 and 3 are B grades to me as well. Most of this draft felt like guys for the future. 4th rd was an A for me... 6th and 7th rd was just dudes to me trying to get some competion at different spots so I'm giving a C grade there. Overall to me it's a B draft. We'll really be able to grade this draft after 2024 season.
@Justin-cl7lg4 ай бұрын
If we can make Malik a hybrid player, or nickel CB I think he can be a baller.
@jackmetcalf3384 ай бұрын
I disagree with you on Pearsall, Chase. I suspect you would have given the same kind of grade to Brandon Aiyuk when he was drafted. You got caught by surprise and probably had a little bias toward some of the bigger names still available. I can say this because I graded Aiyuk low for the same reasons I suspect you graded Pearsall low. Honestly, I see better tape from Pearsall than I saw at the time for Aiyuk. I'm not saying he'll be better, but once I saw the tape and understood what he is good at, his choice made perfect sense. Great route runner, superb hands, definitely fast enough (game speed) and big heart. I'm giving Pearsall a B+ and I do think he'll be a major piece by year 2, year 3 at the latest. I wanted Rosengarten bad! Which made it all the worse that he got snatched up by the Ravens one slot ahead of us. Maybe the plan was to go with him and the Ravens surprised them. But maybe, they prioritized locking down the 2ndary or at least were set to pick Green or Rosengarten and got their man regardless. We keep gripiing about the line, me included, but this is a team that ranked 2nd overall, 3rd rushing, and 4th passing in 2023. That line is getting it done, we all just wish they'd get it done better cause we're greedy MF'ers. Offense didn't lose us the Super Bowl, defense did. I always felt the balance between the front end and back end of the defense was a little out of whack, which brought down the front end somewhat. I think Green has the potential to shore that up now and into the future for us. And when you see the tape and hear the intangibles on Puni, I now like him as much as I liked Rosengarten. I think he may be a little nastier and a little more athletic. Green and Puni both get B+. Mustafa's versatility is intriguing. He projects as having better ball skills than Brown or Hufunga even though I looked at him as a thumper like those two. As a round 4 I give him a solid B and believe he will contribute by 2025 and maybe even this year. Guerendo could be another one of the patented 49er late round running backs who outperforms most if not all the higher ranked ones. He's BIG. He's fast. He will probably be the best blocking back we have from day 1. I wanted to ding him for his upright running style, but a guy named Derrick Henry warned me not to. Because he's so big, he was still able to just truck people despite being upright, and then give him a sliver, and he's got the speed to get to the house. I give it an A too, partly because I trust Kyle and John and partly because tape don't lie (see Pearsall for that too!). Cowing may mean the end to Gray. Man, the kid is fast and nimble. Size is my only concern. I'm pulling for this kid to make it and prove out to be the guy who can blow the top off defenses that we've been looking for. Gonna have to put on 10 pounds of muscle and better learn to block or he'll only see the field on 4 receiver sets. I give him a C based on his current limitations. Jarret Kingston is also a C for me. I'm not seeing him as more than a swing player for depth. Hope I'm wrong. Bethune is a hitter, and he'll fly all over the field. I'm not sure he can leap over last year's LB picks so I'm giving him a C and will happily move it to B if he proves out to be a special teams ace.
@anthonybadgero82594 ай бұрын
i agree with 99% of what u said other than the o-line being good. Purdy was 9th ranked when you look at how much he was under pressure. And 9/16 of the sacks came from colton mckivits. I am confident enough to stick with the rest of the OL but mckivits needs to go. Purdy made it work with scrambles and getting out of the pocket when needed but he shouldnt have to do that. If he had a couple extra seconds in the pocket to look at options it would make a whole world of difference, but he has to always move away from mckivits side early.
@jackmetcalf3384 ай бұрын
@@anthonybadgero8259 I couldn't agree more that McKivitz has been the weak link and finding his replacement was the #1 priority for me. Remember the context of my remarks about the offense was how badly I wanted them to draft Rosengarten to take over that right tackle spot. I had hoped they though Puni could slide in at RT, but he projects to play inside. He still improves the line even if its just as a depth piece for now. And despite the problems at RT, that line gave up the 6th least sacks in the league. Purdy is so good in the pocket, so quick making decisions, and is a far better scrambler than he's given credit for. So Purdy definitely helped keep the sacks down like a lot of other good mobile QB's did. The quick hitting system and strong run game also help. So in that context with top 4 running and passing games, I can see how getting a good CB who loves playing man to man can shore up the back end of the defense to return the D line to the glory days of 2022. We could also still see a trade for a tackle before the season begins, which would be awesome and alleviate my last concern.

OL through free agency? That ship has passed and it has been picked through so many times. Teams were spending exorbitant amount of money on mediocre O-lineman. Niners were suppose to get cheap O-lineman through the draft and they failed on a tier 1 or tier 2 O-lineman in this draft.

I completely agree with you. We could have traded down and gain some picks for next year but we had too many reaches. We had OT Suamataria fall to us but we traded out so KC drafted him. Our WR and CB room is crowded but O-line is still thin and D-line is still thin. We didn't address our LB needs either. There are 2 spot open this year and could've got someone like Payton Wilson in the 3rd round if we moved up. We didn't address our TE depth.
@JamesBond-ts3xl4 ай бұрын
I think many of you (including you, Chase) are missing the point here. The Niners have learned that a team needs to have an identity and players which fit that. All of the guys they drafted first, love the game and therefore, will work their asses off to get better. Second, just because some "draft expert" rates a player higher or lower does not mean that the player is a "reach" or a "good value". The Niners have a board of players they like and have them rated accordingly based on projection, need, love of the game, intelligence, toughness, and competitiveness. That is how they got Kittle and Hufanga in the 5th round for example. The Niners also realized that much of their roster is set already and that only 6-8 players will make the team. That is why they traded up to get Guerendo, for example. Finally, many "experts" love the Pearsall and Green picks for all of the aforementioned reasons. Just sayin'. I don't like draft grades now because everything changes in training camp. I will say that the Niners probably got at least 3-4 future starters so to me, that is a very successful haul.

Why didn't they pick a bona fide offensive tackle like Kingsley Suamataia in the first round instead? Or why didn't they select a top center instead of picking Pearsall whom will not address their most pressing needs, which is to draft offensive and defensive tackles, neither of which they did?

Looking back at the Draft and the UDFA signings I’ll give us a B+ we addressed everything really but the DL . The RB and the second WR pick up was a shock to me , I expected one in 1st or a CB . We addressed depth and versatility which is best for our top heavy roster. Our backups at WR this year didn’t give off much production and they wasn’t confident enough. The pick up at CB was a sign that we are going to go more man in the back and let the front 7 get home .

To sum up the draft, the Niners reached to draft a receiver who was projected to go in the mid to late second round in round one, drafted a CB in the second round who won't start for at least 3 years, drafted an undersized OT in the third round, a safety who put up mediocre numbers in college in the fourth round, a running back who won't have any significant playing time in the fourth round as there's no way he's better than CMC, Mitchell and Mason, another receiver who won't have any playing time in the fourth round, another undersized offensive lineman in round six, and a linebacker who doesn't have the athleticism to play with Warner and Greenlaw. No, the 49ers did not adequately address any of their major needs in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Chase, you the man! You did a great job! It was a tough draft and somewhat frustrating from the vantage point of the Faithful. No doubt, Lynch and Shanahan have what we might think are intangibles traits that they rate highly in their pick process. We can only hope they are right . . . time will tell! I hope they prove me wrong, C+

Good luck making this team. Niners are more deep this year. Must win big game. Offense full of weapons.

B plus because they addressed the need.

Draft gade D+ .. the reached and passed on really good players, the pretty much drafted a bunch of guys to play on the special teams squad

Last time Niners took WR at #31 it was Rashaun Woods in 2004. Not a good omen.

I'm just sick that we let the eagles snag quinyon Mitchell and cooper dejean man. 2 of the best corners in the draft smfh

Skipped the legacy for sm guys smh 🤦 and pretty much bench players. Cuz per reports they are short on depth. So not the best available at all looking for role position players smh.

They seemed to be really interested in picking players who were on bad units from bad teams.

Ricky Pearsall, A

This is for the future draft. I also think we should sign Aiyuk and trade Debo because we already have a player like him in CMC . Debo is a liability in a close game because he can’t separate .

Niners had a pretty average draft with many reaches. They didn't really address their O-line needs. They didn't come out with a tier 1 or tier 2 OL. They didn't address their LB needs either. They picked a LB in their very last pick. Niners didnt address their TE depth. Pearsall was a reach (projected 2nd or 3rd rounder), Green was a reach (projected as a 3rd or 4th rounder), Jarrett Kingston was a reach (there was Beaux Limmer still on the board but Niners passed on him). Pearsall and Green will probably be good players but Niners could have moved down the draft board and gain extra pick for next year. The player I absolutely like is Isaac Gurrendo. He could probably play at FB or be like a Raheem Mostert. Mustapha is a good player. I get the Cowling pick. He could be a good small slot receiver and a good KR/PR. Niners rivals killed it in the draft. Eagles had an absolute great draft. They had drafted guys with good ball skills and good athletic traits that can move. They moved a lot in the draft and they ended up with a 3rd, 4th, and 5th rounder for next year. I give them an A+ for the draft. The KC Chief had a really good draft. They got Xavier Worthy which could be like a DeSean Jackson in that offense. That is definitely an Andy Reid type. I dont know how teams are guarding both Worthy and Hollywood Brown. They traded with the Niners and got OT Suamataria which many mock draft projected him at a 1st. They got a good athletic TE in Jared Wiley.

The list I saw had Pearsall at the end of the first round. The other WRs were not that good or not a deep threat. They were hyped, except for the top three.

Ricky pearsall seems to be Dante pettis 2.0 hope I’m wrong.. he struggled his whole college career until his final season when he was dam near 25 playing 19 year old kids, numbers still weren’t out of this world for a first rounder.
@5rings164 ай бұрын
He's way better than Pettis.

You understand 18+ months of covid, there was no sports at all or barely any sports was played. I get it. Some people like to yap all day dramas and all. But, they will conveniently left out some facts as to why some players stayed in college longer then others.

Go in. B minus. More O line I thought. Weapons are nothing can't block for them. Purdy hurried to much what changed. r like it but needed o line. Puni and 1st or 2nd round tackle would of did it

Chase dont jus review the 49ers…..the division is really interesting….seattle, la, cards had a very very good draft…..everybody had a really good draft…..u can even argue that all the other teams had a BETTER draft than the niners because of their draft position…..maybe delve into the other teams i would like ur analysis as well….

You are underestimating Pearsall really bad. It’s a shame.
@cjmedia17254 ай бұрын
I’m surprised you gave an A for a trade up to get a RB when we are loaded at that position. Seems very much like a goofy Shanahan pick.
