I remember hearing this song for the first time when my grandfather passed away in September 1985. It was written by a young man from Oxford House, Manitoba. I've since forgotten his name, but he was only 16 or 17 at the time. Beautiful song, I'm glad that it has touched so many other people.

I don't know if I commented before. But the very first time this song was sung, was in 1985 when my Grandfather Joachim McKay passed on. My cousin, who was 3 or 4 years older than me, picked up the guitar and literally made up this song. It was so beautiful, that my late Mum, asked him to sing it again, and she recorded on one of those old cassette recorders. I have since forgotten my cousins' name, but I know that he too passed on. When my dad passed on, my mom tried to give him mouth to mouth to bring him back, she was saying Joseph don't leave me, I had to pull away from dad and tell her you have to let him go hes suffering to much, he had Parkinsons disease, when I think about it from time to time it breaks my heart I can still hear her voice I love then both so much it hurts at times
