4G63 DSM TIMING BELT INSTALL

This timing belt install procedure was done to a 4g63 DSM 6 bolt motor, however... the same concept can be applied to 7 bolt 4g63 motors. Notice This was done on a motor with the balance shafts REMOVED. I do not take responsibility to any harm that may be caused to your engine. This video was mainly created to help others and also as a general guide on how to do the timing belt replacement and get a general idea on how to set your timing marks when installing a new timing belt. One important thing to note, when you're lining up the cam gears, make sure you use a straightedge between the centers of the cam bolts to check the timing marks are aligned. It's EXTREMELY easy to be off by a tooth or even up to three if you're just eyeballing it, as it can *look* right gear-against-gear without a hard reference in place.

Hey so I just bought a 7 bolt that was freshened up so timing wasn’t done too long ago and my water pump pulley was wobbling so since the motor is out of the car I’m gonna be installing a new water pump and re timing it now my question is Do I have to re time the balance shafts or can I skip the balance shafts since they were done recently ? -thanks

I have a 6 bolt block motor with a 2G head. going into a 2G eclipse. on the 7bolt motor I have water neck coming out of the motor but the 6bolt block hasn't have one. So my big question is what's the best way to run it. Does anyone have a video on best way to run the water line

I’m new to the DSM platform and appreciate the knowledge you share with fellow dsmers! I’m doing a timing belt job an a 7 bolt GS-T and noticed that while rotating the crankshaft, the aftermarket HKS cam dowel pins are facing down instead of facing up, even though all of my other timing marks are lining up perfectly. The only thing that I can conclude is that I’m not at top dead center for cylinder 1, and need to continue rotating the crank shaft until my dowel pins on my cam gears are facing up and the timing marks match? Please advise - and Thanks DSM Thunder!

Yes, keep rotating it until the dowel pins are on the top and the crank and oil pump sproket are lined up as well. If you still have balance shafts, remember to check the sprocket for the oil pump is not 180° off. After you line everything up, make sure to give the motor a spin a total of 6 full turns(base off the crank mark), they should all line up. Good luck!

@@DSMTHuNDeR when is it necessary to bleed the lifters? I’ve been told that bleeding is only necessary when installing a new camshaft. I’m currently changing the valve stem seals and wanted your opinion on whether or not you would recommend bleeding the lifters before putting them back in the head? Thanks!!

@@chadjohnson6229 I would let the lifters soak in a small container of fresh oil overnight and prime the oil (if possible) by rotating the oil pump sproket with a impact/drill at mediumish speed. You'll know when the oil system is fully bled once you see oil coming out of the head.

@@DSMTHuNDeR I also replaced my valve stem seals and used rope in the cylinders to keep my valves from dropping, while rotating the crankshaft as I replaced the valve stem seals for each cylinder. Since I removed my cams and timing belt, how do I once again find TDC for cylinder #1 on the compression stroke. Since the crankshaft timing marks line up for both the compression and exhaust stroke, I’m not sure which stroke I’m on…. Any advice Sir? Thanks!!

Question. I'm doing my head with engine with the car. What do I to the belt so I can just take it off and put it back in when I'm putting things back together. Can I just use a grenade pin into the idle tensioner or Do I need the long screw from j racing to stick it behind the engine Thanks.

The long rod that screws into the motor mount bracket (7 bolt) that's is suppose to compress down the hydraulic tensioner (6 bolt) won't line up with the 1g tensioner arm anymore... so unfortunately you will have to disassemble everything on the timing belt side to expose the tensioner and compress it on a bench vise manually to drop the grenade pin. I've see other dsmers weld a new surface on the tensioner arm in order to the long rod (or bolt, whatever you want to call it) to actually catch again and compress it without having the need to do it manually in the future. @Jason Drew on youtube I believe is the one who had that video up... I'm not I'm 100% sure on that, so don't quote me. Hope that helps.

Yes. We will mess around with the cam gears once the engine is installed on the car/tuning.

Hey I put a 6bolt into a 1995 gsx The front transmission bolt that bolts up into the block can no longer bolt up as it’s a 6bolt But every bolt Bolts up fine . Should I leave that bolt alone? If u have Instagram That would be great to ask you

Before I start I just wanted to say I really appreciate the content on your channel it's very informational and have helpful keep it up. So I'm doing a favor for a friend and unfortunately because of my health condition there has been a lot of time from when I started to when I left off. Doesn't make things any easier having to deal with really bad problem with my short and some long term memory I have a gnarly scar on the back of my head to show for that lol. Back to topic, I already have the head back from the machine shop from getting rebuilt. Besides replacing the head gasket I'm also replacing the timing set consisting of new timing belt, pulleys, sprockets, gaskets, etc etc... My questions are, when getting the motor timed should I have the head completely bolted down and torqued to spec before actually doing the timing? Or should I have the head mounted and set in place just enough to be able to install the timing belt and get everything timed then torque down the head bolts???
