Connor Rydland Thanks! It will be my first full season with a corps if I make it. I marched the tail end of last season with OC and it just made me want more

Hey Connor! Do you have any tips for getting better at Mello. Do you have any recomendations on technique and mouthpieces?
@ConnorRydland7 жыл бұрын
Technique wise, I would say maybe follow the Arbans method book. Trumpet and Mellophone are about identical except for the key that they are in, and every bit of technique in the book would be useful. Always remember to use your air over mouthpiece pressure, and mouthpiece wise I would try to get a hammond 6mp or a conn/king mello 6. They feel a little more like trumpet mouthpieces but give that rich mello tone. Hopefully this is helpful!

What is the black thing you have by the mouthpiece
@ConnorRydland7 жыл бұрын
It's called a berp, it allows you to mouthpiece buzz
@BobJones-wo9uu7 жыл бұрын
Hey man I saw that you were using a BERP and I was wondering which one you were using since they don't sell mellophone ones. (I'm looking to get one) Great vid by the way!
@ConnorRydland7 жыл бұрын
Bob Jones thank you! The trumpet berps fit right on, but if you use a short shank mello mouthpiece like any Hammond, it would be ideal to "shave" out the inside so the mouthpiece will fit in all the way so you don't buzz in a strange partial. (Hopefully this makes sense, if not just reply and I'll go farther in depth)
@BobJones-wo9uu7 жыл бұрын
Connor Rydland sorry just a little confused (been an alto player my whole life). So I understand what you mean by the short shank (I'm getting the Hammond 6mp) I'm just confused about the shaving part? Thanks!
@ConnorRydland7 жыл бұрын
Bob Jones I played alto for 7 years! So basically the Hammond mouthpieces won't fit all the way into the berp, which causes the pitch to be a little bit off center. The only way to understand it is to try it and see what it "feels" like. Shaving the inside down would let the mouthpiece fit all the way in and have a "centered" pitch. That way everything you buzz would match the horn. (One of the mello techs at SCV works for Hammond and designed the mouthpieces, he told us about this problem and how to fix it)
@BobJones-wo9uu7 жыл бұрын
Connor Rydland Thanks a lot man! (And I'm gonna assume you just use sandpaper to shave it down)

Hot damn that was good. Now all that is missing in my post season life is a contra cam from the top 3 corps
@jonhamilton51287 жыл бұрын
There has been an underlying controversy with the lick at the end. Some say you all rip up to the B, followed by Bb-Ab-Gb -- then you rip up to a C. I believe trumpet 2 or 3 has a dissonant note as soon as you all hit that C which almost causes it to sound like you all trill up a half step before you end that phrase with a Bb. It look like your finger may have slipped on the run down before you ripped up the C. Is there any trill or is it just straight from the Gb to the C? Just curious. Thanks! Great mellophone book btw, you all sound amazing!
@ConnorRydland7 жыл бұрын
it's supposed to be a straight slur, but it was a mix of my finger slipping and my 2nd valve sticking
@jonhamilton51287 жыл бұрын
Connor Rydland Gotcha! I just planned on writing out the mellophone book because I love to archive SCV stuff. Just wanted to make sure. Thanks for the video! I've been waiting for a non-soloist mellophone cam from SCV since 2013. Haha Great show and definitely an amazing Finals performance!
