LG CX's don't really have any downsides unless you consider the size an issue. Burn in basically doesn't exist anymore, you'd have to practically cause it by intention at this point. I strongly recommend you do some research on the subject.

I don't see how this is any different really from the XG438Q Wendell checked out a year ago for about 1/2 the price. I actually picked this up and returned it due to the dark level smearing which I thought would not be a problem as on the XG438Q, alas it's exactly the same. I can't see a reason to buy this at this price? the PG43UQ has proper Gsync and borderline passable HDR for about 15% more money.

Got a 3090 had a oled c9 but had to move it to the bedroom as hadmi2.1 is broken so bought this beast and my GOD is it bright vs a Oled it fantastic for gaming on PC!! It my second screen for story or open world games. My competitive screen is 1440p 165hz screen.

@@ewob52h74 Love it! 2 minor points though, it's heavy, and when on for a while does put out some heat (like plasma TVs used to). I mounted mine on a TV arm to hold the weight. Detail is great, HDR is super bright.

LG CX 48 would love to have your take on that. LG really leads the way on OLED panels I think they are on GEN7 now in OLED. No one can really compete. So LG should create a gaming centric brand that just does Gsync, Freesync, VRR, 4k, 120Hz, and OLED in 27, 38 ultrawide, and 43 inch format. I think they would really dominate a large segment of the monitor market if they did that. The burn in problems have largely been resolved in LG CX and I am sure it will get even better in different revisions. Just slap on Displayport 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 and they can take my money. Personally for my its between this monitor and the LG CX 48 inch, but to be honest the reviews and comparisons of this ACER CG7 vs the LG CX 48 haven't been good enough for me to pull the trigger. I am leaning towards the LG CX as my next monitor. I just want to go back to 16:9 aspect ratio. Ultrawide was great with the Predator x34, but not a huge fan of the ultrawide 21:9 ratio any longer.

Watching this on my LG 48 Oled. Knowing this here is bad in comparison. Its good for a VA Panel but for the same price you can get perfect blacks, perfect colors, perfect viewing angels, no smearing... etc. ;-) But nice review man! As always!

I used this monitor for a while, though lovely in some ways, the smearing while gaming or scrolling can be really obnoxious, and along with the BGR layout text at 100% scaling at 4K, even when set to BGR clear type, can look really bad. Also the RGB strips are nice but no magnetic attachment, no provided two sided sticky stuff either, so ultimately a large chore. Finally, the box is HUGE, way bigger than you’d expect for 43”. So while the large, bright, vivid screen looks great, the drawbacks are a few too many, and I ended up selling it. Now waiting for maybe an excellent 32” hdmi 2.1 4K120+ screen. One day!

I recently got an LG Nano IPS 38" panel from costco, the model is 38GN950. It was on sale with a 200 dollar discount for $1,338.99 the monitor is G-Sync certified but it doesn't use a G-Sync module and it's also FreeSync Premium Pro, specs: 3840 x 1600, HDR 600 & DCI-P3 98% Color Gamut, IPS 1ms (GtG) 144Hz Refresh Rate (O/C 160Hz). Yes you would miss out on oleds biggest feature: burn in! Just to help your brain: some people mostly work on their screen and sometimes play a game or watch a movie.

Most people don't do graphics design. Really weird arguments. I saw the RTING investigation. That is also where my information comes from. They saw burn in after 1 year. Yes they said it was minor but they where using it as a gaming/movie device. My usage is for documents, programming, system admin etc. So 99% static image that apparently will begin to burn in after 1 year! I have never I my life had 1 monitor or TV burn in. Cumulative 3-5ms at best from cable to screen. Have you tested monitors giving you 1-2ms with your latency tester?

A friend of mine has one of these, and he wasn't able to get adaptive sync working properly (on a GTX 1070 ti) until he tried replacing the displayport cable. Then suddenly it worked, no problem. Definitely an F for his cable.

Wendell is this an 8 bit or 10 bit color panel? I saw one like this at MicroCenter that was only 6 bit with FRC which is horrible for a $1000 to $1500 dollar monitor.

You mentioned multiple times that you are concerned about when driving games at below 48 Hz, since that is the bottom of the stated refresh range. Here’s the thing: my understanding was that LFC (low framerate compensation) is achieved when a monitor can dial its refresh rate from a minimum to 2.4 times that minimum (48*2.4=115.2). In this case, this monitor aces that with a range of 48 to 144 Hz. So, by my understanding, if a monitor can display any framerate in that range, it can also display any framerate below the minimum by doubling frames as quickly as if it ramped all the way down. That means that for all monitors which are certified G-Sync compatible or better, or FreeSync with LFC, it doesn’t really matter what the minimum refresh rate the panel hits is because the monitor can display in-time a signal anywhere from 1 Hz to its maximum refresh rate. Is this incorrect?

Looking for a good monitor myself. 32 inch, 4k, non curved, 60Hz for 2 general purposes: Scrolling and skimming and reading 100's of pages of text a day (I work as an editor) and "slow" strategy and RPG games with maximum picture quality. I don't need 120 or 240 Hz, I just want pretty. Turns out it's actually not so easy to find. I red about a dozen monitors but meh, everyone has something bad to say about any monitor. so I am sticking with my old ASUS blurry 1440p thing.

Asus ROG PG43UQ it's pretty decent for how I see it and it's around $1500. 43", 4K, 144hz, HDR1000. It's basically the evolution of the XG438Q you already reviewed a couple of years ago. The only downside for me personally it's the brightness, a minumum of 175 nits it's definitely a bit too much for me, to have on a desk anyway.

I bought this monitor on april, now recently the backlight has started to "flicker" on / off randomly and on the sides it the leds sometimes are out of sync that they flicker on left and right out of sync which causes sometimes really odd behavior. I don't know are the cables faulty or the backlight driver failing.

if you have a graphics card that does hdmi 2.1 then I'd recommend a lg 9 or x series oled. my 55-inch b9 was $1300 and would wipe the floor with that display. I have to run it at 1440p so I can get 120hz on my 1080 ti, but a 3080 or 6800xt would solve that.

Quantum dot is not a type of display, it's a separate layer for enhancing the colors from an underlying display technology, like VA or IPS. It can also be a color filter, but that's only reserved for Samsung's OLED technology right now. It can also be a type of display, electroluminescent quantum dots, that beats even OLED and microLED theoretically, but I'm sure you weren't talking about that. You might have been talking about newer generation VA panels from Samsung that have fixed a lot of the pixel response issues that are associated with VA panels, but they're still VA panels. There's still some dark level smearing from 0-20%, and a bit of overshoot at mid level transitions but way better than it's ever been. You're definitely right that we need new display technology, but OLED still has burn in issues (pls don't @ me OLED fanboys, my tv with pixel shift technology still got logo spots and has uniformity issues after 3 years) and microLED is too large for monitor sizes. Maybe the combination of IPS and miniLED FALD backlighting is our salvation, but then we still get IPS glow. With VA you might get blooming in HDR like on Samsung's high end TVs. The aforementioned QD-EL displays will have none of these issues and should offer even rec.2020 color space, but that's futuristic hocus pocus for now like OLED was in the past. So in the end my post is just here to express my nihilistic viewpoints and get you all just as depressed about monitor technology as I am.

I would liked to have had a very good 43 inch display that I could afford. Unfortunately the best display that I could afford was a 120Hz at 4K 55" Samsung Q80T for $1050. It's a bit large at two feet from my face however it does a great job at 1440p and 4K. I played WoWS after getting my RTX 3090 [the only thing available...] and got about 350 to 400 FPS at 1440p and about 250 FPS at 4K, no tearing, great looking image. The only problem I found was in the ancient game Crysis, about 1/10 of the screen at the bottom would not sync properly at 1440p, I think this is a driver issue, Nvidia has not done a very good job lately with drivers for this card, and drivers have been out since September 2020. [EDIT: I think the Hz for this screen start at 20 for VRR]

Frankly? I'm happy with my Acer Predator XB271HU. It's 27inch (not 43 but meh, ok) it's 165 Hz, it's G-sync, it's 2560 * 1440 and most importantly it's IPS and colours don't look like they've been bleached. AND I got it for less than 600$ so...

The one thing I'm always looking for in these reviews and is always missing.. How does it look at 1440 and 1080?? Historically, monitors are meh, and tv's are better. But this thing looks like it wants to be a hybrid so I do wonder.. I recently found myself gaming less on my monitor and gravitating to my Samsung Q80 with 120hz and Freesync. Mainly because I can swap games out from 1440 and 4k depending on what I can run. Also, HDR1000 is nice, and with Freesync on, input lag drops from 10ms to under 6.

I also got this beast at microcenter on sale for 900. I like it "mostly". Biggest gripe for me is it's too bright. Even at 50 brightness I feel like I burn my eyes burn out. Also the contrast isn't great. At the price I would recommend the oled instead of this.

I would say yes but if you notice it turns off a bit often then I would not recommend it for examination. Other than that it is an ideal workstation monitor. It works best in a chilly environment where the chill prevents it from overheating. As a workstation monitor this one is ideal for things like engineering projects and medical research and of course if like to use it to produce creative projects, etc. In the words of The Johnson Factor, this is an ´absolutely beautiful and amazing´monitor. If you want to use it to watch a movie do note that the audio will switch to the monitor and then back to the computer if you have a connected speaker system to your computer or workstation. If you need to clean it it is best to use cotton.

Unfortunately the CX 48 has a BGR panel just like this Acer one. Everything else about it is better though. Sony has a 48 inch RGB OLED but that one is only 60hz. Have you thought about mounting your LG upside down and switching the display orientation in Windows to get RGB instead? Just curious.

Basically a tv, for that size it should be 6k or even 8k. I have a 4k 43" tv and it is okey, but I would like to have better ppi for such a big display.

Maybe you're just too nitpicky. A 4k 43" TV/monitor would be 102PPI which is fairly sharp. As sharp as a 21.5" 1080p monitor. Anything higher than 4k would require extreme GPU power just to play modern games.

@@coreyisabigpushover yeah sure, but for work related matters I find 4k on such displays too big or too low ppi. I have played in the past for biggest possible immersion Race sims hooked up to 42" 1080p tv sets and it worked pretty good, and that at 60cm/24" of distance, so for gaming that does not really affect me, but when I have to stare at the desktop and doing work related stuff like reading, writing and such on such large screens the grid pattern that one sees is very disturbing. I mean this tv is supposed to be used as a Computer monitor and it just does not cut it all the way as just that, a computer monitor.

So, you wanted a list of monitors, I can't do that, because there aren't any worth buying (except maybe the $700 dollar Samsung G7 or $1500 G9). But I can tell you, this SHOULD be the year of OLED coming to the "monitor" market. I have seen in the news Samsung who will be making QD-OLED monitors soon. They started production at 15,000 panels a month in December (which is over) and should reach full capacity by middle 2021 (30,000, summer 2021). TYPICAL OLED TV's are RGB, either with subpixels side by side or stacked. Samsung plans to use their quantum dots, which means Blue-Blue-Blue sub pixels, which with the Quantum Dot filter over two out of three, will give you Reds and Greens.... this in theory should result in brighter max brightness for HDR. Meaning we should see HDR1400 spec OLED monitors.... while TV's are generally only HDR1000 spec. Then you have Sony, whom through their partnership with Panasonic, have a company called JOLED. This company as of last summer (June 2020) have 22", 27", and 32" 4k60 panels available for customers (asus, acer, etc) to utilize in their monitors.... I would LOVE if Sony decided NOT to wait for these brands (like asus) to use their panels, and instead develop their own line of monitors for gaming and production work. They could even sell these smaller monitors marketed towards PS5 owners.... a great double down to get sales for both. And knowing Sony, the monitor would be sleek, simple, thin bezels, with Vesa mounting support. And it would "just work".... On that note, my dream monitor is either a 32" curved (1800r curve like the new samsung models g7/g9) with 4k resolution utilizing OLED technology. OR, an ultrawide with at LEAST 1440p vertical resolution, 21:9 or 32:9 doesn't matter, OLED..... Now some might argue "but 4k60 aint that great" yes, on LCD 4k60 aint great, because LCD is dogshit in terms of pixel response.... Going more into depth, if you were to take a 60hz CRT monitor and compare it to a 60hz LCD monitor, you would probably prefer the LCD for space saving, but everyone would agree the picture quality/smoothness is better on the CRT. In fact, for FPS gaming, a lot of us REFUSED to move to LCD because CRT was still superior. Eventually though, the CRT dies, you couldn't buy them new, so you were forced into LCD technology.... Now if we add 4k60 OLED to the mix, you would end up picking that OLED over both other options. The motion blur is LESS than a 60hz CRT, but fits in the footprint of a 60hz LCD.... that is HUGE in terms of quality of life. So while 4k60 seems "bad" compared to 4k120, you don't NEED 120hz on OLED to enjoy it. Which is why I laugh at reddit right now on the OLED subredit, they all suck off LG and their 4k120 TV even though you don't NEED it at all. ON LCD, the reason gamers WANT/NEED higher refresh, is to REDUCE motion blur and make tracking and enemy easier. With OLED, you have damn near instant pixel response, so 60hz would feel akin to 144hz or better on LCD.... that's quite amazing. For those worried about "burn in" its not a thing. There are many mitigations in place. NORMAL TV owners don't have burn in with OLED, its only the "Retards" whom think they know everything that end up with burn in. You are not supposed to jack your TV brightness to 100%.... the only reason to have a brightness adjustment, is to match your tv to ambient light or direct light. An example here would be your cellphone. Most likely, while indoors, 35% brightness or less is more than enough. The moment you are outside in direct sunlight, that 35% brightness means you cant see your screen. So you increase brightness to 100% to see in direct sunlight. When it comes to your TV, you should only set your brightness "as low as possible but high enough so you don't have eye strain to see the picture".... We have a Sony A8H in the living room. Its literally set to 15% brightness out of 100%. And the picture is PERFECT. 100% brightness is not required. And for HDR content, generally the TV will be in contact with the content being displayed, and change brightness dynamically to match the scene in question. So setting brightness has zero effect on this, because if the scene of the movie wants 1000 nits, your tv if capable will display 1000 nits.... period. And when you switch back to basic TV (SDR) you will be back to your original 15% that you had originally set.... that's just how TV's work. You wont get more brightness in an HDR movie by changing brightness, as the TV should react to the content and change it. So if its a dark scene and its at say 40% brightness, and you pause the movie to set 100%, pressing play should reset your tv back to 40% due to the scene demanding only 40% brightness.... As stated, the only people getting burn in jack their SDR brightness adjustment to 100% and leave it on say CNN with the bottom logo and such in place. That is their fault for abusing their TV and deserve the burn in.... I have the Sony A8H tv, no burn in issues. I have a Sony Xperia 1 Mark 2 cellphone, which I use more often than anyone else guaranteed (im a cripple) and I have yet to have burn in (never go over 50% brightness, never a need to). this year, 2021, should be year of the OLED, unless these brands continue to rape us for no reason. asus will sell a brand new 1080p 144hz monitor for $250 bucks, which cost them LESS than $50 to make.... no thank you. I wont fall for said rape. I haven't upgraded monitors in years because there is literally no point. hell I still have my old 1080p 144hz asus, the original one that doesn't have g-sync but was later available to buy a kit to upgrade it with g-sync.... no reason to upgrade. its just not worth it. panel technology hasn't gotten any better. ips is garabge. va is garbage. tn is garbage but great for fps gaming. oled is the future. and for those sucking off the idea of microLED or miniLED, both are still based on LCD technology, and will suffer from piss poor response times.... miniLED will be a thing as a cheap alternative to OLED for those who can't afford OLED, but OLED will remain king.

So waiting for MicroLED and similar to shell out for an extra nice panel... OLED is great but the burn is.... yeah no. We have a QLED TV in our house. It *looks* FANTASTIC. I don't think hardly any of the QLED panels care for or focus on latency and refresh rate... Which really sucks... The contrast on them is really good its just... I don't think we're getting decent HDR in the consumer space for a while outside of OLED phones.

QLED could be amazing! But shrink is a problem. The new LG CX panels are awesome, but there is a reason no panels are smaller than 48" -- hard to make.

@@Level1Techs Oh, I see, I never even considered they were having a hard time shrinking down the components. That makes a lot of sense. Especially considering most people buy monitors in the 20-30 inch range. 30 and up is just far too large when you're sitting right in front of it.

I have that monitor. It's pretty great for productivity as that density at that size. It's smooth at 120hz high contrast good brightness for HDR. The zones are laughable and there's quite a bit if motion blur meither one it's great all-rounder productivity games movies. Also it's a chunky display so be sure you have a good wall mount. Also it sharpens the image a bit even when sharpen is off.. when you turn it on and then off then it's actually off. But it's not problematic unless you actually test for it. At launch I've paid equivalent of $1600 also I hate IPS contrast I waited years for big 4k high brightness high refresh rate display that has pretty good static contrast none of that IPS glow

Well I think the stuff like speakers, etc is still somewhat worth it. Like I'm a headphone user 99% of the time, hence my really nice ampd/dac unit and 4 pairs of different headphones (closedbacks, open, planar magnetics, gaming headset with a mic), but the one day per month I feel like not wearing headphones, I do use my Samsung ultrawide's shit speakers, no matter how shit they are.
