Changting County is a county under the jurisdiction of Longyan City, Fujian Province, China, located in the western part of Fujian Province. This county was also one of the eight Hakka counties under the jurisdiction of Tingzhou Prefecture during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It was a subsidiary county of Tingzhou Prefecture. It has been the border hub of Fujian, Guangdong and Jiangxi provinces since ancient times. It is known as the "Western Gate of Fujian Province". Changting is the first prefectural city where Hakka people live together, and is known as the "Hakka Capital of the World". Changting is also the third batch of national historical and cultural cities approved by the State Council.
It belonged to Kuaiji County in the Western Han Dynasty and Jian'an County during the Three Kingdoms Period.
In 282 (the third year of Taikang in the Western Jin Dynasty), it became the territory of Xinluo County. During the Yongjia Rebellion in the Jin Dynasty, a large number of residents from the Central Plains migrated to the southern mountainous areas to avoid the war, which was known as the "Yiguannan Crossing" in history. In subsequent dynasties, the Changting area became an important area for residents fleeing chaos in the Central Plains, and it had reached a certain scale by the Tang Dynasty. In the Tang Dynasty, Tingzhou and Guochangting County were established. In the 24th year of Kaiyuan (736) of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, the imperial court established the Tingzhou organizational system to accommodate the migrating people.
From 925 to 926, the "Chen Ben Uprising" broke out in Tingzhou. Thirty thousand rebels besieged Tingzhou City, which lasted for several months.
In the Ming Dynasty, Tingzhou was renamed Tingzhou Prefecture and governed Changting County.
Today's Hakka people are the descendants of the Central Plains people who migrated south in the past dynasties. In the long history of Hakka migration, Tingzhou was one of the main destinations and settlements for the Hakkas. In the past, the main residents of the eight counties under the jurisdiction of Tingzhou Prefecture were all Hakkas. As the seat of Tingzhou Prefecture, Changting County is known as the "Hakka capital".
In 1913, the government was abolished and the county was abolished. From 1927 to 1929, the warlord Guo Fengming separatized the Changting area.
In March 1929, the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army won the battle in Tingzhou and occupied Changting County for the first time.
In September 1931, the Red Army occupied Changting County again; in October, Tingzhou City was established from Changting County, becoming the first city in Fujian. In 1932, Tingzhou City became the seat of the Soviet government of Fujian Province. Before and after this, Tinglian County, Xinting County, Tingdong County, Zhaozheng County, Tingxi County and Xintinghang County were also established in present-day Changting County. In 1934, after the Red Army began its Long March, the area returned to the jurisdiction of the National Government and its original organizational structure was restored.
In 1935, Qu Qiubai, the early leader of the Communist Party of China, was arrested in Changting County. Chiang Kai-shek ordered Qu Qiubai's execution. His remains were initially buried in Panlonggang, Luohan Ridge, and were moved to Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery on June 18, 1955.
From 1951 to 1997, it was affiliated to the Longyan District Commissioner's Office. From May 1997 to December 2008, it was affiliated to prefecture-level Longyan City
