These two are Dornier's. They're distinguished from the Dassault (from a layman's observation) by the Dornier's very pointed nose section. The Dassault is more rounded. There are several other differences between the planes, although they were a financial joint venture by the two companies. For reasons I have never understood, the Dornier iteration is slightly more unstable on approach and in turbulence (according to pilots who fly them).

Does anyone know why they hang the drop tanks on the outboard stations instead of inboard? Seems counterintuitive but I'm sure there's a good reason.

It has an internal fuel system, the external fueltanks is for extra fuel load.

Yep, the single-engine derivative of the Alpha... too bad Argentina/allies didn't make more of them, their small production numbers means they're probably not commercially viable for a Contract Air Services firm... tempting for private owners though... but again, where would you get airframe service in Europe or N. America?

Always seemed to me that a nation can fill 95% of all possible needs using simple jets like the Alpha Jet, or Hawk, or even the MB.339 or CASA 101. You can carry bombs and rockets, probably could carry JDAMs and Harpoons if you modified them a bit. Can carry Sidewinders and a 30mm cannon, so it would be perfectly able to intercept and fight with enemy aggressors. But that last 5% of performance is so crucial that nations pay trillions of dollars just to squeeze that little bit more performance out. It's just ironic that a poorer nation that can only spend hundreds of millions on defense instead of billions and trillions can still have jets that will do most of the things that an F-15 can do, just not quite as well. It's definitely not linear. Spending only 100/th as much doesn't mean your planes are only 1/100th as fast or that they can only do 1/100th the damage. Anyway, point is that many people dismiss jets like this as "mere" trainers, since they are low and slow and cheap compared to front line fighters and attack aircraft. But in reality, they are very potent aircraft, very fast and powerful as planes go, and if you aren't able to afford anything better, you've still got a pretty powerful air force, as long as you don't have to fight the guys with F-15s. A Alpha Jet would mop up the floor with any WWII fighter, even the Me 262.

Not a good fighter either. No afterburner, low payload, short range, no self-sealing tanks, no armor. In Germany, they call them "Luftmoped" (Airmoped) for that reason.
@kicksnarehats112 жыл бұрын
@@Medley3000 Well, it was never meant to be a "fighter", as in air-to-air. The Alpha Jet was specified as a light CAS platform and, in a secondary role, as an advanced flight trainer. It must be good at something, or it wouldn't be used as an aggressor airframe today.
@Medley30002 жыл бұрын
@@kicksnarehats11 This aircraft is not a combat aircraft. Fortunately, it never had to pass this test of fire and prove itself in a war. If it had, its massive problems would have quickly become apparent. The aircraft is unsuitable as ground combat support and is therefore a burden for the German Luftwaffe. That is why it was removed.
@MajorCaliber2 жыл бұрын
@@Medley3000 Still, Alpha Jet is a MUCH better sport-trainer for private owners than say, a T-38, since it actually has self-start, APU, and even some cargo space, not to mention hardpoints for extra fuel, NONE of which the Talon has.
