Enjoy your videos very much. While it is great to see the old locos in action, is it of concern that the railway companies are not investing in new motive power? Or is there an unprecedented demand for motive power due to increased rail freight, that is making it necessary to hire locos from preservation groups and pull old units out of storage?
@Schony747
@Schony747 3 жыл бұрын
I think it's a mix of both. Most rolling stock in NSW for qube is owned while in Victoria it's leased. SSR seem to like the old stuff. Qube and SCT have new steel contracts coming up so there will need to be some new locos at some point.

Howcome vline are using these older "heratige" locos? also how does the vr fleet work, who owns the actual locos?
@Schony747

N class are owned by V/Line Passenger. The A class - 60, 62, 66 and 70 were owned by Vline. A66 is still with V/Line and A60 and 62 have moved to preservation.

Are the older locos running on Broad Gauge (5'3") track or is it a mix of Broad and Standard Gauge?
@Schony747

A mix of both. The B class and X31 broad gauge. SSR 442 and the PN third series X50 and 48 standard gauge. I can update the description to reflect that.

Godday Brendan, You saved your best video for a eye candy Christmas treat. That was brilliant all round, in footy terms you kicked out of the park. 3 x B Class, would of loved to have seen that crossing the level crossing at Sunshine Rd & Somerville Rd. Wouldn't bother me being stuck in a traffic jam seeing those beautiful B's passing by. That Ultima combo is longer than the Maryvale combo, those G Class that Qube own were worn out several years ago when I was at Qube, no wonder they fail they need a full overhaul from front to back the pair of G Class they own. Love the CLP'S back to back real nice. X 31 long nose forward who would of thought in this day & age. Great video thoroughly enjoyed it. Stay safe have a Merry Christmas & a Happy and safe New Year. Regards Louis

Great work as always Brendan. What is obvious in these great videos is how the private companies who now run freight, (and it can be argued some are not that good either), have no pride in the appearance of some of the rolling stock, or even the locomotives. Call me a dinosaur, however back in the 70's, when all rail was government owned, you would hardly see a loco in the filthy condition of some today, and graffiti was removed ASAP on any wagons. Sometimes progress isn't that "progressive" at all.
@RichoBCV
@RichoBCV 3 жыл бұрын
Although to be fair, Govt run locos looked arguably worse in the 1980-90s. It's not really a Govt verses Private enterprise issue, more one of management priorities.
@125sloth
@125sloth 3 жыл бұрын
@@RichoBCV We will have to agree to disagree on that one. I was in a reasonably high position at the old VR in the 70's and was there when privatisation commenced with Kennett as Premier.. he had no choice as Victoria was literally broke. I would respectfully suggest government versus private was and still is a huge issue. Managements had very good priorities, but were often over ruled by bean counters with no rail experience.
@RichoBCV
@RichoBCV 3 жыл бұрын
I don't dispute that privatisation hasn't been a roaring success. Again, it's more important that whoever owns or runs a railway values and takes pride in their operation, equipment, and staff. And there's a lot that can influence that.

But these private companies are often able to compete for business that larger companies can't or don't think worthwhile.
@125sloth
@125sloth 3 жыл бұрын
@@AndreiTupolev If the private companies followed the rules, that would not be a problem. Rail should be winning freight back from trucks. It has a long way to go still. These companies have had ample time to easily compete with road. They just sat on their hands, only concerned with large trains travelling through two or more states. There is more to freight than just doing that. Anyway, my general point has been missed, and that's Ok. i am finished with the subject.

Bloody BRILLIANT. The B,class locos are amazing. Were there other locos in the world of this American style that were double end. Surely the inspiration for the Triang Transcontinental loco Also Triang had a similar loco in green and orange with pantographs probably to represent the L class locos.
@vsvnrg3263

these were the only ones that were double ended in the entire world. sweden did some double ended ones based on this shape and with the same insides. i forget the name. it was something like norad made them. i think a few of them remain in service.
@Steven_Rowe
@Steven_Rowe 3 жыл бұрын
@@vsvnrg3263 I actually thought that was the case of being unique. How good do they look in VR livery. It's funny that having come from he UK nearly 50 years ago I could never understand why there were single ended locos that either worked backwards or needed turning. It's funny how in. Aus the booster unit was never used like in he US.
@vsvnrg3263
@vsvnrg3263 3 жыл бұрын
@@Steven_Rowe ,the trains were often not long enough. in us there are always trains long enough. booster units were tried by pacific national in 2005. they were xr class without cabs called xrb. these 3 spent most of their existence sleeping in dark corners. they are considered impractical. have a look on wikipedia.
