🇬🇧 This great cultural centre is the first work by the architect Oscar Niemeyer in Spain.
It is located on the Aviles estuary, five minutes from the town's historic centre on foot. Its broad cultural programme of international activities includes exhibitions, plays, dances, films, concerts, conferences and gastronomic activities. The centre has different architectural spaces that are distinctive for their design and functionality: the auditorium, with a stage that opens out towards the square in the centre; the dome, used for exhibitions; the tower-viewing point, 20 metres high, with a restaurant overlooking the whole city; and the multi-purpose building, with a cinema, meeting and conference rooms, and the visitor reception centre.

Está situado en la ría de Avilés, a cinco minutos andando del casco histórico de la localidad. Su programación cultural, de carácter internacional, incluye exposiciones, teatro, danza, cine, música, conferencias y actividades gastronómicas. Very nice. Enjoyed it. Although the white buildings might have looked great against a bright blue sky, I think the low clouds and rain gave the video a great atmosphere. (We're having the same weather here today.) It took me a few minutes to see the sliced egg, but there it is - the yellow egg yoke. I wonder if the sketch of the woman on the 'yoke' is symbolic? Anyway, very interesting how the shapes of the buildings change as you walk around the plaza. It somewhat reminds me of the old TWA terminal at JFK airport by Saarinen. Happy New Year!

I agree with you, this is the type of architecture that I would expect to find in a sunnier place in the south of Spain (In fact in my next tour that I had pending of Santa Cruz de Tenerife I show a building similar to this one) When it was built I thought it did not fit in with a rainy northern city like Aviles, although after visiting it, I really liked contrast between this cultural complex and rest of the city (although surely many people do not think so) I also like atmosphere that creates the cloudy day although it is a pity that it was so empty due to the rain. I really don't have any idea what that drawing on the facade could mean either (I have read that Oscar Niemeyer, who designed this building, used similar images frequently) You're right. Now that you mention it, all of this architect's building designs give the impression of being from the 60s or 70s. I hope you enjoy those rainy days 😄 Happy New Year!!

You are right, Oscar Niemeyer's designs are very peculiar and in Europe it is difficult to find buildings designed by him (Is there any of his work in Japan?). This Center was one of his last works before he died. Gracias por tu comentario. Si, la ciudad de Avilés es muy bonita. A mi personalmente tambien me gusto el centro Niemeyer por el contraste que crea con la ciudad. Pienso que este es el tipo de edificio que crea opiniones encontradas. Saludos y feliz año!

@@WalkingSpain independientemente de que el edificio sea más o menos atractivo, pienso que se podía haber cuidado un poco más el entorno al mismo . No vale con las pasarelas. Lo ideal hubiera sido soterrar el tramo de vías férreas, aunque eso hubiera sido un gasto excesivo, claro. La zona no es amable, y sigue teniendo un componente post industrial que no ayuda. @@TheGaztela En eso tienes toda la razón, el entorno es bastante mejorable. Para mí tanto el acceso al centro, pasando por debajo de la carretera donde casi tienes que agacharte para pasar, como el descampado que tiene alrededor le restan atractivo. Aunque por lo que sé, la intención era transformar toda esa zona en un proyecto llamado Isla de la innovación, claro que eso fue ideado antes de la crisis así que me temo que permanecerá así por mucho tiempo.
