BENAVENTE (ZAMORA)
🇬🇧 Benavente has been accumulating since its foundation a rich artistic heritage contributed by the different cultures that have settled there. Its enviable location in the northwest of the peninsula has meant that throughout history it has always been an important crossroads.
Among them, it is worth highlighting the Jacobean roads: Vía de la Plata, Camino de Oriente: Alicante and Madrid, Camino de Valladolid, the route through the Valle del Tera and the Camino de Asturias, as well as different ravines and cords.
The most representative building in town is the Parador de Turismo Fernando II hotel, which occupies the Caracol Tower, a 16th-century castle with wide segmental miradors and a beautiful Mudejar coffered ceiling in the main section; although it also has other attractions for the visitor, such as the church of Santa María de Azogue, outstanding in which are the doors, some multicoloured Gothic sculptures and several pillars; San Juan del Mercado, with its prominent southern door.
Enjoy this walking tour!

Hola! Another very enjoyable video. I watched this one on a relaxing Sunday night, and a quiet spring walk video recorded on a late Sunday afternoon (i think) was a perfect fit. At the very beginning of the video, it was really quiet. Really quiet on the streets and the park, but very peaceful. In the opening shot, I noticed that little stone arch over some water - was that an old footbridge or something else? The early spring there in the NW of Spain seems pretty similar to New England. I noticed that the trees don't have any leaves yet, except for some white blossoms on some of them. That's pretty much the same as around here in the past two weeks, but we had a few days in the low 80's recently, and the leaves are starting to burst out now. The temperature there was about 61 F, which is more typical of the weather around here now. I was surprised to see the yellow forsythia bushes in the park at the beginning! At least that's what I think they are. They bloom around here in early/mid April and are coming out now. Sure sign of spring here. Castillo de la Mota - so there's a moat around the town. It's been a long time since I studied any Spanish, but I guessed that mota was moat. Well, you really only have to move one letter. 😁 But for cruce de camino, I thought that cruce and crucifix must have the same origin, so I guessed 'intersection of roads'. And then I see 'crossroads' - of course! I was on the right track anyway. 😆 The town is very pretty, and you can feel the history immediately. The church at 10:43 is beautiful, of course. I forget which church is which, but the door there is amazing. I was thinking that was the front of the church, and was surprised to see what I think was the main door around the corner. It was kind of funny (to me anyway) to see the Tattoo Gallery right next to the old, historic church - in case you feel like getting a quick tattoo after Mass. 😆 At 12:30 as you were going into the Plaza Mayor, I thought - aha! this is the plaza mayor of this town. And I was right. 😀 There's something about that shot at 14:24, the way the street curves gently off to the left that I really like. Very picturesque shot. At 17:40, this church looks sort of like a castle, but then around the front, it looks very different. Beautiful shot of the tower in the late afternoon sun too. At 22:25 as you were heading to Casa de Solita, I think the guy walking in the street said 'hello' as he passed by you. Interesting that he said hello and not hola. Did he maybe think you were a tourist taking video and just said hello in English instead? Maybe not, but it made me curious. It was interesting when you walked up there with all the kids and families there. It's interesting to see a slice of everyday life in a town like this in Spain. Beautiful park up there. I really liked the shot at 30:17. The way those trees looked with the golden sun and the dark shadows. Beautiful. And looking out at the countryside at the end. When I think of Europe in general, I never think of vast, open spaces like the American West, but as I've learned, Spain has some big, open spaces. Nice video, and hope you had a nice Easter too. Take care.

Hola! Thank you so much! I hope you also had a nice Easter. I know that in the United States Easter eggs are very popular on those dates but I am curious to know if there are any special events in Boston during Easter? Here in Spain, resurrection of Christ is represented in processions in all towns during Easter Sunday. I'm glad you enjoyed this tour. You're right, I filmed it on Sunday afternoon. Sunday afternoons are always very quiet in these small towns, shops are closed and people usually rest at home or take the opportunity to walk through the streets, have a coffe or beer in a bar or enjoy with the family in the park. Yes, that stone arch at the beginning of the tour is the only thing that has managed to survive from a medieval bridge. According to what I read, it was a bridge with five arches. From what you say about spring in New England, you are right that it is very similar to that of Spain. Perhaps this year has been a little different from the rest because it has rained less than usual and the temperatures have varied a lot (we have had cold weeks mixed with other very warm ones for those dates). At the time I filmed the tour (March 26) many of the trees still had a winter look, now the leaves have blossomed and the look is completely spring. I think you're also right about the bushes, I think they're the ones you mean. Yeah, you are very sharp! "cruz" means cross and "cruce" means crossing and it comes from Latin (crux, crucis) like most words in Spanish (just like Ayuntamiento 😄). Although I am sorry to tell you that "mota" does not mean moat 😄 mota in Spanish is a small hill although I think almost no one in Spain uses that word (in fact, I did not know that word until a couple of years ago when I filmed a tour of the Castillo de la Mota in Medina del Campo), the most accurate English word is "knoll", so I think the most accurate translation would be "castle on the knoll" I agree with you, the door of the church is very beautiful, and it is curious that it is more impressive than the main entrance of the church. I also found curious that tattoo shop next to the church, its clientele doesn't seem the most suitable... although on second thought 🤔 I often see a lot of people with religious tattoos, so maybe I'm completely wrong 😆 I perfectly understand what you say about that street because I had a similar feeling while filming. Sometimes while I'm filming and I get the feeling that I'm filming a nice shot, I look at the Gopro screen and think: It's looking good! I remember that when I was filming at the beginning of that street I had that same feeling. It is a very photogenic street. Perhaps this is because of what you say, together with the fact that the street has a slight slope. I don't know exactly. You will have already noticed that all these small historic towns always have similar things, they all have a main square, a cathedral or main church and depending on their historical importance, a castle or, in this case, what remains of a castle since It was destroyed by Napoleonic troops during the Spanish war of independence. If they do not have any of these constructions then they cannot be considered a Spanish town 😝😆 Regarding church of Santa María de Azogue, I guess it gave you that impression of a castle because of its tower, it reminds me of churches in other countries like England. It is a pity that I did not film the interior because it is really beautiful but just before I started filming the tour, I passed by it and notified that a mass was being celebrated and I did not want to enter later while filming so as not to disturb. I was taken by surprise when the guy greeted me, I barely had time to wave back. It must be said that it is very common in small Spanish towns (usually in towns smaller than Benavente) for people to greet each other when they pass even if they don't know each other (is this also common in small towns in the United States?) People are usually very friendly and greet you and even start a conversation with you to let you know points of interest and recommendations, it's something I like about the atmosphere in towns. At the time I was filming I didn't understand what he told me, that's why I checked it again after reading your message. It is true that it seems that he says "Hello!" but after listening to it again with more attention, he actually says "Hasta luego!" (Good-bye!), but he says it quickly and with the mask it is not completely understood. As I told you in a previous message, the interior part of Spain is a huge plateau (actually not that big if we compare it with the ones in the United States😄) This time it can be seen perfectly at the end. By the way, curiously these days a beautiful autumnal landscape of a place that belonged to the White Mountains in New Hampshire appeared in the random wallpaper that appears when I start Windows on my computer. As I liked the landscape and I was curious, I looked for its location and I was surprised to discover that it is near Boston 😄 I'm sure that place looks very familiar to you. Thank you for your visit. See you! Take care
