[4K] Day Out With Thomas on the Strasburg Rail Road

Thomas the Tank Engine finally gets to travel the entire Strasburg Rail Road's "Road to Paradise."
In order to accommodate the current standards for sanitization and crowd limitations, the Strasburg Rail Road decided to run Thomas on a longer schedule more akin to their regular trips. Departing East Strasburg Station, Thomas runs backwards past the Red Caboose Motel, and on towards Esbenshade, Cherry Hill, and Carpenters on the 4.5 mile trip to Paradise. After running around the train and even getting to meet Amtrak, the crew and Thomas are tasked to handle the train up the steady uphill grade back to to the station. The result was an impressive steam show as Thomas and the crew handled the train with ease, and also a lot of noise. With 2020 being the year it has been, we have to thank the railroad and its employees for making Thomas put on a show as had never been seen before.

I still can't get over that this life sized thomas is now able to run all the way to paradise since I heard its water tank isn't big enough for 1 run. This has just questioned me since it made its first run to paradise earlier this year. I bet the crew have been having to fill it up after each run.

The big difference is the extended break in between trips. Thomas has enough water capacity for a trip to paradise and return, but he would quickly run out with only 15 minutes break to refill water on the railroad’s hourly schedule. Having the trips spread to 90 minutes apart and more time for water is what makes this trip possible.

When I was like 6, I was at Strasbourg and I went into the shop and at the time I didn’t Thomas was inside. I don’t know what they where working but Thomases face doubles as the smoke box and they had it off and against the wall. As a 6year old trying to comprehend why Thomas is kidnapped, dismembered and decapitated in the mild of no where Pennsylvania is hard to think about 😂

Once, I camped next a train track. My family was going to my gramma's 90th birthday party and we spent one night at a campground in Ohio, not knowing our site was next to the tracks before arrival. There's a town near me with a railroad track active in my lifetime. Once, I took an Adirondack train ride. In my childhood, I watched trains on our TV and if I was near an active track, in life. Trains are NOT quiet, no matter the engine's size. There's all the whistling and all the other noise from the engine, along with the wheel noises.

Thomas is a BEDT tank engine Who lives on the Strasburg railroad in Pennsylvania. He’s a cheeky little engine with six small wheels, a short stumpy funnel, a short stumpy boiler, A short stumpy dome, two large cylinders on either side, and a black cowcatcher in front.

And when trains come in, He pulls the Empty coaches away so that the other steam engines can go and rest. Thomas thinks no other steam engine on the line works as hard as he does. He loves playing tricks on them, including Number 90, The biggest, strongest, and oldest engine of all. Thomas likes to tease Number 90 with his whistle, “PEEP! PIP! PEEP! Wake up, lazy bones! Why don’t you work hard like me?“

They use to not let thomas go to paradise lane or pull the train backwards he would like half way and face forward the entire time Edit: he wouldn't even go halfway before 2020 halfway is cherry hill

They expanded his operation due to crowd size restrictions and needing to take on water. This longer setup to Paradise is confirmed for 2021, but it could go back to the old setup in the future.

It always bothered me as a kid that this thomas model had external piston cylinders and an extended coal bunker, but that was before I knew that American railroad laws required it.

This Thomas is built from a pre-built tank engine, so they adapted its existing design to become Thomas. Strasburg probably is capable of building a brand new tank engine, but whoever wanted Thomas built wasn’t willing to pay for it.
