@@LivingWalks Unfortunately things are getting worse around here. All the bars and restaurants have already been closed. We cannot move from the city to the outside, and there is a curfew from 10 at night. And goverment have recommended us to stay at home and go out only for what is essential. So I can't move to make new videos, and I don't think I can do it in quite a few weeks :-( (I haven't chosen the best time to start my Walking Videos channel) But the worst thing is not the sadness in the streets, but the sadness in all the people I talk to (friends, family, neighbors ...). The arrival of winter is already a sadder time, which affects the mood of the people here (fewer hours of daylight, many rainy days and no sun) but now the pandemic seems to be affecting more and more psychologically. And it seems that we will not be able to celebrate family meetings on Christmas, so the prospects are even sadder. Well, it is what our generation has had to live! I always say the same thing: if we compare all this with what our grandparents had to experience (two world wars, a civil war here ... the blitz in London ... etc etc) ... we just have to face it with strength and hope. A huge hug my friend!

My dearest Y&M !! What a wonderful walk in this lovely town! I had never had the opportunity to see it so well and I must say that I really liked it very much! A nice place to live. Very quiet and on a human scale! Really lovely ... As always, you let me spend a few minutes relaxing with the company of your walks ... I really feel like I'm there with you, you know! And now we really need moments like these, where even the mind can get distracted and ... travel .... Here, as I imagine you know, the situation is getting even worse. Fortunately, intensive care is not as full as before and this is excellent news, but the infections are rising and rising ... Dear friends, we must hold on and think positive now more than ever. This horrible year is about to go away and we hope the next one is better. In the meantime, thank you, thank you very much for your wonderful company! Love you both! Enjoy your weekend! Renata

Dear Renata, so pleased you enjoyed the walk (did you turn on the captions, some of them might make you smile)? Hello once again, and nice to join you another lovely walk, although, as Covid-19 is on a steep rise in the UK, I think we can all see why !!! Enjoyed walking past Kings College ( people really should see the magnificent Chapel ) and Trinity College, having visited many times in the 1970`s, attending and giving lectures ( guest lectures - Oxford ). Regarding Trinity, the two princes are so-so, the real luminaries are ( of course ) Sir Issac Newton - the tree is part fact, part fiction, G.H.Hardy, a mathematician of deep and profound insight, especially regarding his work on Prime Numbers, and Bertrand Russell, extraordinary mathematician, writer and philosopher - and pacifist. Finally, for any paleographers, like me out there, try to obtain a readers card ( not easy ) for the Parker Library - Corpus Christi College, with it`s astonishing collection of Medieval Manuscripts, well worth the effort :) Thanks once again - and on a sunny day too - always seemed to be raining whenever I visited, as I seem to recall :(

Hello again MrTorleon, nice to hear from you again. What an interesting comment and I really appreciate the fleshing out of the information in the captions. This surely is one of the most positive aspects of KZbin - at it's best, the comment system allows this to be more a collaborative than a passive affair, where we all can learn something. Visiting both Cambridge and Oxford over the last few weeks has definitely rekindled my own memories as an undergrad at Warwick, and especially being immersed in an atmosphere of learning. Around 9.20 you're going past the main gates of King's and at 11 King's Parade, the Fudge Kitchen. Back in the late '50s that shop was J. Bays gents outfitters and I spent happy Christmases there with my widowed ma whose sister Anne was married to Jimmy Bays. It was taken over by New and Lingwood and he continued as manager until he retired. Lots of small changes stick out for me but the big pcure stlll brings back the happiest of memories. There is nothing quite like waking on Christmas morning to the sound of the chapel bells at King's with the cousins who treated me like a brother when I was there..... in truth I don't know if I truly remember the bells or not but looking straight out their sitting room window at the main gate of King's was quite something and Cambridge and Christmas are ever linked for me.

My earliest Cambridge memories are 60 years past now and my most recent are visiting my widowed aunty who was living in sheltered accomodation on the other side of the Cam, up the hill past Kettle's Yard (where they have some of the original shop fittings and bits from J.Bays). I was notified that you had "pinned" me and I'm honoured at that and apologise if I have forced you to do it again by editing my foolish mistake of typing ii King's Parade instead of 11 King's Parade. What a strange thing to see the city your Mother and Brother and you were born in almost 40 years ago for me. Except I lived there a year or so before being raised in America. Someday maybe I'll find myself back there tracing old family history. Not as tourists, but as native born yet separated. Military. Milden Hall.

Hello there Mr Smith, well I'm very happy to have brought the city to you that you and your family lived in almost 40 years ago. It makes it worth doing such films to receive such a lovely message. I very much hope that Someday you'll find yourself back there retracing your family history. It's a lovely city indeed. All the best to you and thanks for connecting.

I've just been on a coach out there and it is a mad place but very interesting I'd say because we couldn't get around easily to see enough. The manic looking students on bikes ploughing through the crowds of tourists as fast as they could go were almost funny if they weren't such a danger to the dithery old ladies who were on the coach trip.

A final postscript ( from me, that is ). A colleague has advised me that I run the risk of becoming an old fossil - somewhat out of touch. Apparently, Small guided tour groups have been allowed through the Wren Library ( Trinity College ) and the Parker Library ( Corpus Christi College ) pre Covid-19 of course - and slightly astonishing to me.However, a readers ticket would still be required for study purposes.The Cambridge Tourist Information Office should always be the first point of call for up to date details, of course . Things have changed since the 1970`s, so I have been suitably admonished ( sigh )
@LivingWalks4 жыл бұрын
Morning Mr Torleon, thank you for the update. I didn't know that Small guided tour groups have been allowed through the Wren Library and the Parker Library. It's the readers ticket that would complete the pleasure though. Hope to stay in touch and receive for more welcome tips from you. We'll be uploading Oxford fairly soon. Best wishes to you.
@MrTorleon4 жыл бұрын
@@LivingWalks Well yes, indeed, but that is the information I received, which I still find surprising, if true.Future visitors should always check the various College websites, which may offer further details.I would also suggest ( if I may ) that visitors should allow some time for the Fitzwilliam Museum, which houses a tremendous collection of artifacts, and is conducting some fascinating and non-invasive forensic research on illuminated manuscripts, which can be followed on their dedicated website. Goodness, I do go on !!!!!! Wonderful news regarding your planned walk around Oxford, which is so dear to my heart, and as I was last there in 2016, possibly not quite so out of touch :) Many thanks, as always.
