It's not as convenient as Vietnam where airplanes are the best way. Even 400km they use planes. Airports cover the whole country. By 2030, one airport will be available for every two provinces. Vietnam has 63 provinces on a small area.

My first ever bus journey from BKK to Chiang Mai was in 1972, No air con. Because it broke 10 mins after departure, No reclining seats. The driver had a shot gun on display. Mobile phones hadn’t been invented. As for a rest room on the bus! You can only imagine where we stopped! - Oh boy this is pure luxury!

I took a "VIP" bus from Chiang Mai to Bangkok in 2003. Air con broke down about an hour into the trip, no open windows, then we got in an accident with an elderly man driving a pickup truck, then the lady in the seat across from me found out the bag of rambutans she brought on the bus was full of red ants, and they were swarming her. Fortunately only her. Not the most pleasant trip.

This is actually a great idea. First, you save one night at a hotel, and second you save the hastle of going through airport security checkpoints. I would love to go on a first class overnight bus from CM to BKK!

Come a long way from the buses that plied that route the last time I was there. They weren’t that uncomfortable considering it was so long ago but that bus looked like it’s from another planet let alone another era. Good to see the improvement in the transport hasn’t been matched by a massive increase in the fares either.

In Thailand have two biggest bus route, Northern-Eastern, and Sountern. For The North-East route, it has many bus company competitive. That causes service and cost to improve year by year. In the opposite for Southern route. Not more than 2 companies running. The service is very very poor, the price is expensive. People prefer low-cost airlines for southern travel.

Totally agree. It's no so much about the comfort of the journey but reaching the destination safely. While they do have 2 drivers in rotation, many of the drivers took stimulants in order to keep awake during long journeys. Is sad for the drivers who are not paid much so I always tell my friends who travel by this mode to tip the drivers.

And the air-conditioning on those buses can be ridiculously cold, even around December, when it can get quite cold up in CM. Yep, Thai trains are the go.
