Great review series, Jem--thanks! One quibble: I believe Sony's Variable ND Filter system originally appeared on their PXW-X160 & PXW-X180 camcorders, rather than being introduced on the FS5.

08:16 it has a HDMI 1.4 port. HDMI 2.0 supports up to UHD@60Hz, not 30Hz.

XPilot P I would say the 16-70 f/4 is a great all arounder. I would have 1-2 fast primes as well. The 55 f/1.8 Sony Zeiss is a beauty.

Here is a reply from Nic, one of our tech specialists: To get access to the 60p mode at 4k resolution on the FS5, it needs to be configured in RAW mode and the SDI port does need to be used. The FS5 can't achieve that resolution/frame rate combo outside of RAW.

I am looking for some advices on which camcorder should i pick, first of all I am a A7M3 camera owner with 2470gm and 90mm G-Macro ATM, for the reason why i am looking for another camcorder for clip recording, is because i need a camcorder to recording time-lapse shots like sunset which is over 30mins of recording time non stop, or a media press event that record overall in long time or interview, but sometimes i work with some slow motion on episodes too, but not super professional like shooting comedies and movies, but i do think that 4K60/120fps, 10bit 4:2:2 in FS5M2 is really a advantage or say will be a trend perhaps for some years in video market nowadays for portable camcorders, but ATM for my work i think i don't need 10bit overall, just for the future trend and my e-mount lens on A7M3, maybe i could use them also on FS5M2, I am considering the PXW-Z90 with its portability and moderate 4K/30fps performance like my A7M3 or FS5M2, but the cost of FS5M2 is almost double the Z90, would like to know if FS5M2 codec and form will be trend in the coming 2 year otherwise i don't know if worth buying FS5M2 over Z90.

Thanks for this amazing review series. One question: Can I download the footage somewhere? YT has not sufficient quality to compare the footage. Many channels already started to make the test footage of the YT contribution available for download, so I can analyse it myself e.g. colour grading in DaVinci Resolve, whatever.

How much better is this camera really compared to the a7iii? I feel like the colors and quality of what it shoots internally just don’t look the impressively different. Would love to hear your thoughts on it though!

I work with both and prefer the A7III visually. SLOG2 looks better in the A7III since it has a lower minimum ISO. The FS5 has the nice looking Venice color profile, but you can match it pretty well using Alister Chapman's Venice LUTs in the A7III.

@@scotthayesproductions5715 there is something to be said about the convenience of internal ND and XLR inputs - not to mention a camera that's never going to overheat shooting 4k. But an A7iii with an external recorder just seems to be much more cost effective

You put a lot of work into the series. But i am sorry to say that you did a huge mistake exposing the shots! Log recording (especially 8-bit from the FS5) needs to be over expose by 2 stops. Your footage is exposed normally (for rec.709) so in Log you get a lot of noise in the shadows and the midtones (her face for example). There is a lot of good Infos in the video but the test footage is unusable and misleading.

@@tylerminnesma108 You should over expose when shooting log. so expose brighter than you normally would. A external recorder will not help when you underexpose. Look up Alister Chapman he has good info about the topic.

​@@tylerminnesma108 Sony recommends exposing middle grey at 32% in SLOG2 I find that totally unusable and expose middle great at 50-55% to lessen the noise (so add 1.5-2 stops over Sony recommended setting) keep in mind LUTS created for the Sony recommended exposure will not work when adjusting your exposure and you will need to use different versions that take over exposure into account. *The built in Sony LUT (exposure assist) will NOT work, it will look insanely blown out when trying to use it.... FYI I never had any luck using SLOG in low light and much prefer CINE4 gamma. I have a love love hate relationship with this camera, really like the ergonomics, size, weight, mount, file size, remote grip, battery life, love the electronic ND....the exposure issues, wonky menu, and poor lcd/evf are something to consider before buying as they can be infuriating sometimes. everyone that owns one or is buying one just accept you will need another option to view the image and preferably one with scopes!
