Dr Tomitaro Makino passed away in 1957 and the Makino Botanical Garden was opened in 1958. He was born at the end of the Edo period. He was a man who devoted himself solely to botanical research during the turbulent years of the end of the Edo period, the Meiji, Taisho and Showa eras. When you think about it, you realise once again how amazing his life was.
