Awesome! Incedible with all that steam coming out right above the water...

That steam is said to be seawater to cool the battery being charged. Thanks for watching.

The amount of steam it produces is amazing! I have to learn more about the propulsion system.

Hi Terry-san. Thanks for watching. That white smoke is seawater to cool the heat when charging the battery. The Soryu-class submarine stores the energy generated by the diesel engine in the battery while it is surfacing. When diving, it is propelled by the propeller with the power of the battery.

@@binmei Thank you Binmei-san! I'm curious as to what method is used to charge the battery? It can't be a diesel engine as they don't produce that much heat. How often do they have to surface to recharge the battery or can that be done while submerged? I'm very fascinated by this as I've never seen another submarine do this.

The battery is charged by a diesel engine on the surface of the water. Its frequency and charging time are military secrets. I thought this was a common propulsion method for submarines except nuclear submarines. Soryu-class submarines used to use lead-acid batteries, but in recent years they have been replaced by lithium-ion batteries.

@@binmei I've never seen a diesel engine produce steam like that. I know lithium ion batteries produce heat when charging but the amount of steam is incredible. Diesels can recharge batteries while submerged using a snorkel. I'm wondering if Soryu can do this also or if it must be totally surfaced to recharge. The system doesn't seem very stealthy as every time it recharges it must surface and generate huge temperatures and steam. I'm just very puzzled by this submarine! But it must make sense and work since they built and are using it. Thanks for responding!

At this time she surfaced and sailed through a narrow, shallow strait. I think she can also charge with a snorkel. Since Japan has high humidity, water vapor may be more noticeable.
