중국 원산으로 산과 들에서 자란다. 지상부가 겨울 동안에 죽고 높이 2m 내외로 가지에 성모(星毛:여러 갈래로 갈라진 별 모양의 털)가 있다. 잎은 어긋나고 3∼7개로 얕게 갈라지지만 갈라지지 않는 것도 있으며 심장저로 별 모양의 털과 더불어 잔 돌기가 있다. 갈래조각은 달걀 모양의 삼각형이며 둔한 톱니가 있다.
꽃은 8∼10월에 피고 지름 10∼13cm로 연한 홍색으로 취산상으로 윗부분의 잎겨드랑이에 1개씩 달린다. 꽃받침은 보통 중앙까지 5개로 갈라지고 선모(腺毛)가 있으며 꽃받침보다 긴 소포(小苞)가 있다.
열매는 삭과(蒴果)로 둥글고 지름 2.5cm 정도로 퍼진털과 맥이 있다. 종자는 신장형이며 지름 2mm 정도로 뒷면에 흰색의 긴 털이 있으며 10~11월에 익는다. 주로 관상용으로 재배하며, 한방에서 해독·해열·양혈·소종 등에 약재로 쓰인다.
