경상북도 경주시 황남동에 있는 삼국시대의 사적지대. 1968년 7월 24일 사적으로 지정되었다.
1968년 7월 24일 사적으로 지정되었다. 면적은 66만 8121m2이다. 동서로는 안압지(雁鴨池)에서 교동(校洞)까지, 남북으로는 반월성(半月城) 남쪽의 남천(南川)에서 고분공원 앞 첨성로(瞻星路)에 이르는 광대한 지역이다. 이 지역은 신라 왕도(王都)의 중심부였기 때문에, 반월성 ·안압지 ·첨성대 ·계림(鷄林) 등 중요한 사적이 많고 내물왕릉(奈勿王陵)을 포함한 수십 기(基)에 달하는 신라고분이 밀집되어 있다. 지상에 노출되어 있지 않으나, 봉토(封土)가 없어진 많은 고분이 지하에 묻혀 있는 곳이기도 하다. 이 지역이 사적으로 지정됨에 따라 민가가 철거되고 환경이 정돈되어, 옛 모습을 가장 잘 볼 수 있는 곳이다.
