This windswept headland in Washington was originally dubbed "Bahia de la Asuncion" by Spanish explorers in 1775, a far cry from its current title. The name "Cape Disappointment" came courtesy of a frustrated British fur trader, John Meares, in 1788. He mistakenly believed the mighty Columbia River was just a small bay, leading to his less-than-enthusiastic christening. Today, Cape Disappointment offers redemption. Lewis and Clark camped here in 1805, marveling at the crashing waves and the abundant wildlife.
