🇬🇧 Palencia is a small city located in the interior of Spain, in the north of the region of Castilla y León. It is a typical Castilian city, peaceful and very attractive for tourism because of its monumental and historical richness and its appreciated landscapes.
What was once Roman Pallantia has witnessed major historic milestones. A crossroads and an imporant centre of textile manufacturing in other ages, Palencia lived its period of greatest splendour in the Middle Ages. During the reign of Alfonso VIII, the capital became a royal residence and in 1208 the first Spanish university was founded here. The city is watched over by the imposing sculpture of Cristo del Otero which, standing 20 metres tall, dominates the area from one of the hills surrounding the city.
Calle Mayor, Palencia's main thoroughfare, is the backbone of the city running north to south and boasts distinguished façades and a great many shops. To one side of this major road stands the arcaded Main Square, the site of the façades of the City Hall, from the 19th century, and the church of San Francisco, a Franciscan building from the 13th century.
The surrounding streets lead towards the “unknown beauty”, which is how Palencia's Cathdral (14th century) is known. The austerity of its Gothic façade conceals a wealth of art inside.
Another traditional image of Palencia is provided by the church of San Miguel. Its openwork tower from the 13th century stands above the structure of Romanesque origin finished in pointing.
Discover all its amazing historic milestones!

I’m from Palencia. Watching this video evokes two conflicting emotions in me. On one hand, I feel so proud of my people for how clean everything is kept and how well-maintained things are, despite the limited resources we have. On the other hand, I feel deeply saddened to see a region that has been completely neglected by the Spanish authorities. People are forced to emigrate, and the population is becoming older and older.😟 You can observe how quiet the people are, unlike other places in Spain where there is constant "complaining" and protests to gain the attention of authorities. Castilian people are resigned and disciplined.🤨 Regardless, I have a strong affection for the land where I was born. 😍

Hola! Saludos! Ten un buen día

Hola! I started watching the video last night but I had internet problems, and had to stop at the 35 minute mark. So I finished watching it tonight (Wed.). Very much enjoyed it as always. The Cristo del Otero is a bit like the Christ the Redeemer statue over Rio in Brazil. Anyway, the view of the landscape from up there was really beautiful, especially with that blue sky and the sound of the wind blowing. Very peaceful feeling there. I noticed everybody wearing winter jackets and all the leaves on the trees are gone. Some of those trees almost looks like sculptures - the shorter ones with no leaves at all. We definitely don't have any trees like that around here, and I don't think I've seen any like that in California either. But I did notice more buildings there that are made from brick (27:00), which definitely did remind me of Boston. Interesting. At 12:57 I was really surprised to see a sign on a store that said MAPFRE. I had to laugh because that's my car insurance company! I thought they were just a local New England company, but I guess they're international. You learn something new every day. :) Once again, even this town has absolutely beautiful and amazing cathedrals and churches. I noticed they were doing some work on the outside of the cathedral and I was wondering - does the Spanish government give support to the churches, or is it like in America where church and state are strictly separate? I suspect it's quite different in Spain than the US, given the role that the church has played in Spanish history and culture. At 33:47, wow, what an entrance to that cathedral! And the same too at 48:11 at San Miquel. Anyway, great to see this town. Really enjoyed it as always.

Hola! Thanks as always for your message! Oh! It's a shame you couldn't see the whole tour in one go. Curiously when I filmed the tour I thought it wouldn't last that long, but when I finished editing it I was surprised that it lasted almost an hour. I guess from filming at different times, I got that impression. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Palecia is possibly one of the most unknown cities in Spain, I am convinced that few Spaniards have visited it and much less foreign tourists. So if I can contribute my grain of sand (I don't know if this expression is also used in English 😄) so that this town is known a little with this tour, I am satisfied. I also hope to continue visiting this region because it has really beautiful small towns nearby. You're right, Cristo del Otero is like the little brother of the Christ redeemed in Rio (or maybe an older brother because it was built a year before the one in Brazil 🤔), in fact both are twinned. Of course, this one is much less well known. I agree with you, the view from there is amazing, not only of the town (which is the one I focus on) but also of the entire plain where some isolated church and castle can be seen in the distance. I was also lucky because at that time there was no one there and the atmosphere was very calm. Actually the whole town is quite quiet as you can see on the tour. Although it doesn't look like it on the tour because it was a sunny day, it was cold because a icy wind was blowing (Interior of Spain at this time is quite cold) Yes😄 I know the trees you are referring to, this tree has the curious name of platanus hispanica or platanus acerifolia (I am not an expert in botany, I just looked it up on the internet 😆) and when they are pruned they look like modern sculptures. It is a very typical tree in the interior part of the country, I don't remember having seen it in other parts of Spain. If you pay attention to other of my tours of inland towns (Zamora, Toro, Ciudad Rodrigo...) you will also see them in a square or garden. Regarding brick buildings, although in Spain there are many beautiful Mudejar-style historic buildings (bullrings, churches, palaces...) built in brick, brick is mostly used for housing blocks in the suburbs of cities and in most cases they are quite ugly, the brick buildings built in American cities are much more beautiful. It's funny because MAPFRE is a Spanish insurance company and I always thought that it only provided service in Spain, I had no idea that it also did so there, so I think I also learned something new today 😆 Regarding your question about the relationship between the government and the church in Spain, you are right, historically the church has had a lot of influence on Spanish culture and society and had a very close relationship with the government, although currently I think it is similar to what happens in the United States. Spain is a non-denominational state, no religion represents the Spanish state. Currently the catholic church can only receive public funds if a citizen marks an option in the tax return so that a part of his taxes goes to the church. State also gives money for the maintenance and restoration of buildings with great historical or artistic value such as this cathedral. I just had a question similar to yours 😄, does the United States government give some kind of help for the maintenance or restoration of historic buildings or do only the owners of the building have to take care of it? Thanks again for your visit. Since it's already carnival period, I'm curious if Boston celebrates carnival? (I know the most popular is in New Orleans). In any case, I hope you enjoy these days. See you!!

@@WalkingSpain Thanks for the great info. So not only is MAPFRE not a local company, it's a Spanish company! :) And carnival - yeah, that's mostly in New Orleans. Not so much around here. Interesting about the church/state in Spain. In the US, I don't think that many private historic buildings get public funds, but many historic buildings are publicly owned. For example, in my hometown near Boston, there are several houses where the second US president lived in the late 1700's (John Adams). I think they were donated to the government by the Adams family many years ago, and now they are part of the National Park system and publicly funded. Some private historic buildings might be owned by non-profit organizations (museums etc.) and would get tax breaks, but generally raise funds privately. I don't think any church gets direct funds, but of course, they don't pay any property taxes, so it's kind of a subsidy. Yeah, I did notice how quiet it was in the town. Plaza Mayor with all the shops was beautiful, but eerily quiet! Maybe it was that cold weather! :)

@@bostonwalkdrive7763 Thank you very much for clarifying this doubt. Most of the historical monuments and buildings are also public property here. You are right, surely weather made the center of the town so quiet, although at the time I filmed this tour (around 4 pm) many shops were still closed (In Spain many shops close from 2 to 5 pm to rest) Have a good Sunday!
