During the south wind (Kona winds) days it is usually very rainy and humid in Hawaii. And as a result, you will have these reverse landing days. The great part of this is you got a free fly over of nearly everything that Honolulu is known for. In the order of appearance : Black Point, Diamond Head, Waikiki, Ala Moana, Punchbowl Crater, the State Capitol, downtown Honolulu, The busiest Costco on the planet, Honolulu Harbor, and Keehi Lagoon. Well done!

Aloha SP! Awesome video and cool rare reverse ops landing in Honolulu! You have the best timing on how to pick these flights. I was on Hawaiian Airlines A330 that landed in Honolulu and I did not know it was reverse ops. I was sitting on the wrong side (left) . 🤦♂️ Amazing view of Honolulu! Thank you for sharing. 👍
@sla31Ай бұрын
Unfortunately your scenario is the most likely to happen. The only reason I got this awesome view was because it was on Southwest and I could decide where to sit at the last minute. On this same trip I flew Hawaiian on the same route the day before and it was also a reverse ops landing. But... Because Hawaiian has assigned seats, there were no seats on the right side open. So I was stuck looking at water the whole time haha. When it's assigned seating, it really just comes down to luck.

I remember my first time coming to HNL. We were on this approach as well. I was at aw when I was looking out my window, and I felt so happy when we landed. That landing is on runway 26L. Now, I live here on the island of Oahu, and every time I see a flight on approach to land on runway 26, which probably happens about 12-15 days throughout of the entire year, I say to the people "yall lucky" whenever I do a pick up from the airport. Because it is truly rare to land on 26L, to have the welcoming view of Waikiki to see as you land.

The 737 is the world's best selling commercial airliner. On average, a 737 takes off somewhere every 50 seconds.

Was the engine off? It looks like it stopped spinning around the beginning of the vid.
@GarlandTexasSpotter2024Ай бұрын
This is an illusion effect. The engines are on, but the cameras high frame rate cannot pick up the actual speed of the fan blades therefore causing illusions.
@sla31Ай бұрын
To expand on @GarlandTexasSpotter2024's point what's basically happening is the camera is taking 60 frames per second, and the blades of the fan just happen to be at the same spot every time, which gives the appearance that they aren't spinning at all. This is called the wagon wheel effect. Which is essentially when something like a wheel or fan blade appears to be moving at a different speed than it actually is, thanks to the camera's frame rate.
@markjackson5333Ай бұрын
Why the missed approach? Too high ?
@sla31Ай бұрын
They never said. In fact, the never even made any mention of it at all in any announcements haha. I assumed at the time it was a spacing issue with the aircraft in front of us. But I don't really know.
@Curtis-d8jАй бұрын
I suspect cloud cover obscured the view of the runway. Maybe.
