4K - Rite Aid Assault & Robbery - Heroic Clerk Fights Back - Irvine, CA

A robbery and assault occurred at the Rite Aid Pharmacy, located at 18112 Culver Drive, in the city of Irvine, on Thursday evening.
Around 6 PM, Orange County Fire Authority first responders and Irvine Police Department officers responded to a 911 commercial robbery incident at the Rite Aid store. Witnesses reported seeing a store employee being beaten outside of the business by multiple bad actors.
Four individuals, described as Black males, acting in concert, attempted to rob the store, staffed by several employees at the time. One of the staffers, Damion Mathers, sustained facial injuries from the assailants when he heroically acted to protect his co-workers and customers from imminent harm.
After the robbery and altercation, the four robbers fled the scene and were still currently at large, as of this posting.
A dark-colored "croc" shoe was left behind, inside the entrance, and was entered into evidence. An active investigation, conducted by the Irvine Police Department, is ongoing. This is one of a handful of Orange County drugstore-type robberies committed within the past several months, since June.

He didn't get any? I was given as much time as I needed after being robbed at gunpoint at my pharmacy in 2019. They gave us free counseling too. Of course it's a different company. Our robbery was at 10pm and there were only two of us working due to a callout. Two young men came in and came directly to me and pulled a gun demanding money. I did EVERYTHING they asked with my head down. We can lose our jobs if we try to fight AT ALL! I'm sorry Damien was hurt and hopefully Rite Aide will take the situation into consideration I wish Damien and and his coworkers the best!

Seems like it’s a possibility that they could fire him for protecting himself, the customers, and his coworkers 😔 If they do fire him I’ll try to help him find another job

I find it sad that this worker lost his job defending himself and being kind enough to defend everyone around him. If this is the same store I remember, it's off Culver and Michelson in Irvine. It's no longer open 24 hours, I was friends with the late night worker (an Asian lady) who worked those twilight hours back around 2004-2006. I used to wander around late nights and hung out there because it was the only place open, well that and a Carl's Jr. in the same shopping center.

Although it seems almost unAmerican, when employees are injured or killed trying to thwart robbery attempts, their employers risk law suits that cost far more than what might have been lost in the theft. So folks like Damian are let go to discourage employee heroism.
