Vandaag bezoeken we het Chinese nieuw jaar festival 2024 op de West Kruiskade in het hartje van Rotterdam maar we beginnen bij het Maritiem Museum aan de Schiedamsedijk waar een kleine groep Leeuwendansers en het orkestje de spits afbijten. Het is hier nog rustig vergeleken met straks de viering op de West Kruiskade. 2024 is voor de Chinezen wereldwijd "het jaar van de draak".

Chinees Nieuwjaar wordt gevierd op de eerste tot en met de vijftiende dag van de eerste maand van de Chinese kalender. De eerste dag is de dag waarop de tweede (soms de derde) nieuwe maan na het winter-solstitium plaatsvindt. Niet alleen in China en Taiwan, maar ook in veel Chinatowns in de wereld wordt het gevierd. Tegelijkertijd vieren andere Oost-Aziaten, zoals Koreanen en Vietnamezen hun nieuwjaar. Ook Mongolen en Tibetanen (losar) vieren het op dezelfde datum.

Today we visit the Chinese New Year festival 2024 on the West Kruiskade in the heart of Rotterdam, but we start at the Maritime Museum on the Schiedamsedijk where a small group of Lion dancers and the orchestra kick off the event. It is still quiet here compared to the celebration on the West Kruiskade later. 2024 is "the year of the dragon" for the Chinese worldwide.

Chinese New Year is celebrated on the first to fifteenth days of the first month of the Chinese calendar. The first day is the day on which the second (sometimes third) new moon after the winter solstice occurs. It is celebrated not only in China and Taiwan, but also in many Chinatowns around the world. At the same time, other East Asians, such as Koreans and Vietnamese, celebrate their New Year. Mongolians and Tibetans (losar) also celebrate it on the same date.
