Daejeon is South Korea's fifth-largest metropolis, with a population of 1.5 million as of 2019. Located in the central-west region of South Korea alongside forested hills and the Geum River, the city is known both for its technology and research institutions, and for celebrating its natural environment, with most mountains, hot springs, and rivers freely open for public use. Daejeon serves as a hub of transportation for major rail and road routes, and is approximately 50 minutes from the capital, Seoul, by KTX or SRT high speed rail.
Hanbit Tower is a symbolic sculpture erected to commemorate the 1993 World Expo held in Daejeon Metropolitan City as Korea's first accredited expo . Its height is 93 m. The exterior was designed with the motifs of light, science, and space, and based on the wise past, each sculpture was given a lot of meaning related to the Expo, along with the name meaning a ray of light that connects the present and the future. The 1,993 pieces of granite in the lower part, meaning 'past', refer to the year 1993 and Cheomseongdae. Also, the central part, which means 'present', refers to the advanced science of Korea. In addition, the cone at the top, which means 'future', signifies the will of Koreans to rise and leap into the future. In the early days of opening, it was operated by the Hanwha Group, but now it is operated by Daejeon Marketing Corporation. It was closed due to the Corona 19 virus, but reopened on May 21, 2020 (Thursday).
