Walking in Providence, Rhode Island. Providence is known as The Creative Capital, it combines the accessibility and friendliness of a small town with the culture and sophistication of a big city. With a thriving arts community, vibrant and diverse neighborhoods, outstanding hotels, a renowned restaurant scene, and so many things to do, Providence is the perfect place to visit. Especially during the fall.
Long overshadowed by Boston, Providence holds its own as a historical heavyweight. Founded by banished Massachusetts Bay colonist Roger Williams in 1636, this Rhode Island city was the country's first experiment in a secular democracy (the separation of church and state). Today, Providence is a true college town, home to Brown University, Johnson & Wales, Providence College and Rhode Island School of Design. There's even a high concentration of dedicated Red Sox and Patriots fans in town, leading some to believe that it’s a copycat of the Massachusetts capital. But there's a more relaxed vibe to Providence - not to mention more affordable hotel rates and fewer crowds - that draws even loyal Bostonians into the city for the weekend.

Great tour; brings back lots of memories. I worked in the city for about 30 years and I loved being downtown. My career took me to other parts of the state about 20 years ago and haven't had much reason to visit. Credit to Mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci, mired in multiple personal and political scandals, but started a beautification project that lives on.

Holy shit! This is more than I honestly expected! I would never imagine in my wildest dreams that this would be such a beautiful city!

It is a hidden gem. The red brick architecture in historic cities contrasts very nicely with the greenery of all the small parks.

Why are you so surprised. In New England, cities tend to protect and preserve old buildings. I think they've done a great job with restoration. They pedestrian friendly riverfront is particularly nice. Then College Hill hasa very hip vibe. Providence is not on anyone's radar. Boston gets most of the visitors, because it's larger and more historical, but people 😢should stop on Providence is worth a stopover. It's not that big. You could see it in a few hours. They have a really great food scene.

It looks like a lovely place to live! It actually exceeded my expectations to see so many high-rise buildings, I thought Providence was way smaller... but it looks cute anyway!

As a native it is small once you’ve seen other cities.

Providence does have its surprises, and those high-rise buildings can certainly give the city a more dynamic feel.

Nicely done! Lived here 11 years (and worked on the restoration of several of the buildings you walked by at the very start of the video) and still love this great little city. I don't drive, so this is how I see the city--at the speed of walking--and it rewards walks with beauty on so many routes. Glad you liked our little urban gem!

Next time, be sure to walk the 1-mile length of Benefit Street (the oldest part of the city), and up into College Hill, and down to Fox Point.

…beautiful beautiful little city! So rich in color, charm, natural beauty; with its flowers and trees, the architectural variety and charm, the whole ambience ! …Providence punches way above her weight in variety and beauty!! ..and the architecture…! Who would’ve thought such a small big city had so much! Love Providence!

27:57 Oh man! We used to cross under that bridge many a time coming from Providence Place Mall to the Skating rink back in highschool. We'd get a sub and wait for our buses to go home or go back to the mall till night time. Fun days back then!

That is true! You can see that some of the old buildings are made from hand-carved stones when you look closely. It's the same in Boston.

When you consider that the Pilgrims landed in 1620, and Rhode Island was settled in 1636, yeah, I believe it too.

It's nice to see a city that didn't ruin it's riverfront with a freeway. Also, they've done a good job with historic preservation.
@manireik
@manireik 9 күн бұрын
It formerly did ruin much of its waterfront with a freeway just south of where this tour goes (and, of course, demolished an historically Black neighborhood, which was half the point to through-city freeway builders). But, amazingly, they actually removed a major portion of that freeway and the scar it left is slowly but surely being infilled. The pylons of a bridge portion of the freeway over the river were reused for a very popular pedestrian bridge completed just a few years ago : )
