周辺は八ヶ岳中信高原国定公園に指定されており、２０１０年には農林水産省のため池百選に選定されました。
御射鹿池の周辺である蓼科高原の横谷渓谷は奥蓼科温泉郷に代表され、酸性の冷鉱泉の影響と1,100mの高地であり冷害に苦しんできました。１９３３年（昭和8年）にため池として御射鹿池が完成しました。流れ込む冷たい水を留めることにより温まることによって農業用水として使用できるようになりました。酸性が強いため魚などは生息できません。
「御射鹿池」の名は、諏訪大社に伝わる神に捧げるための鹿を射るという神事、御射山御狩神事にその名前の由来があると云われています。諏訪大明神が狩りをする場所として「神野」と呼ばれ神聖な土地でありました。

The Yokoya Valley of Tateshina Highlands, which is the area surrounding the Mishaka pond, has been suffering from the influence of an acidic cold spa and the highland of 1,100 m, which is suffering from cold weather.
