Located in the county of Kent, and around 15 miles east, and slightly south, of central London, is the town of Dartford.
The name 'Dartford' literally translates to 'shallow river crossing (i.e. ford) over the River Darent'. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it appears as 'Tarentefort'. The Holy Trinity Church, seen near the start of the walk, was built circa 1080, with 13th century additions.
Dartford's geographic location along the old Roman road of Watling Street made it a key thoroughfare for those travelling from Dover to London and beyond. Pilgrims to Canterbury would pass through Dover, and the Knights Templar held possession of the manor of Dartford in the 12th century. In 1415 Henry V celebrated England's Agincourt victory at a service in the Holy Trinity Church. Then in 1422, Henry's funeral service took place at the very same church. In 1452, his son Henry VI accepted the surrender of Richard, Duke of York, in Dartford.
In 1588 England's first paper mill was established in Dartford. John Spilman, a German-born entrepreneur, set up a factory on the River Darent and employed skilled German paper-makers. This was the first mill in England to produce good quality white paper on a commercially viable basis. Spilman would go on to become goldsmith to both Elizabeth I and James I.
Other industries in Dartford over the centuries have included wool, brewing, iron-making and engineering. In the year 2000 a mural was unveiled paying homage to Dartford's industrial past. This can be seen between Lowfield Street and High Street around the 11-and-a-half minute mark.
In 1849 Dartford received a railway connection on South Eastern Railway's North Kent Line from London Bridge to Strood. The town would receive further transport infrastructure in 1963 with the opening of the Dartford Tunnel. This crosses the Thames Estuary into the borough of Thurrock in Essex. A second adjacent tunnel would open in 1980, followed by the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge in 1991, at which point it became known collectively as the Dartford-Thurrock River Crossing, or simply the Dartford Crossing. For a toll, drivers are able to use this to bypass London when travelling between Kent and the East of England.
Dartford is the spiritual home of the Rolling Stones. In 1950 two local boys, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, became classmates and childhood friends. Then in 1961, they met on platform 2 of Dartford railway station where it is said that the Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records Jagger was carrying revealed a shared interest. The rest, as they say, is history.

42 years ago holy trinity church celebrated its 900 centennial .. I recall playing Henry VIll in the pageant they held for that event.. Lived in Dartford for the first fifty years of my life until I moved to Blackpool , but my heart is still there and always will be. Thanks for some lovely memories 💕

I was born in Dartford 1957, and moved to Chatham Kent when I got married, in 1984, then we moved to Devon 2008 for 6 years until we moved to Northamptonshire 2014, where I live now on my own. Maybe you did not want to read my life history 😂. How long have you lived in Kent?

No probs, I found it interesting 😀 I have always lived in Kent, born in London in Westminster as my mums waters broke an hour after coming out of the theatre to see 42nd Street with my dad 🕺🏻!

@@mikekaraoke The houses in Dartford were too expensive at the time, I wanted to stay in Dartford really. I won’t be moving now, after losing my husband 4 years ago, I could not be bothered with the hassle. Do you think that you would move away?

@@lauraann4014 Oh were they, my mum/dad bought there house in Bexley for £12,000 way back in 1977! A number of my friends live in different parts of Dartford from the town to West Hill, Temple Hill, Willmington, Longfield, Joydens Wood(although part of that is in Bexley), Swanscombe, etc Sorry to hear about your late husband, youcould always just get the removal men to do it all for you or other family to help with move-Dartford is very reasonable in prices with houses nowadays. No, I wouldn't move away-I'm a homebody of where I live-however if I had the money would get a holiday home somewhere else in England!

dartford central park was so beautiful when i left the uk and it still is to this day but , that huge building that is in construction ruins the whole place

Love this video, I'm also in Kent right between Dartford/Bexley! As you saw/obviously knew beforehand from them buildings in video-Bellway London are doing soooo many building works in Kent like in the boroughs of Dartford, Bexley, Sevenoaks, Thanet etc they must be making an absolute fortune! How comes you never showed The Orchard Theatre one of most popular parts of the town-and you were right near it lol I have now subbed to your channel! Next time you go to Dartford-you could do some videos of some of the others parts like: Wilmington, Greenhithe(esp Bluewater Shopping Centre), Joydens Wood which is you know is both 2 parts of Kent Dartford/Bexley! When you next in Sevenoaks you could do other parts like: Swanley-esp Swanley Park with the mini-train..... + Westerham, Hever, esp -Hever Castle + Gardens..... And Bexley like Bexley Villiage, Bexleyheath/Welling towns with the great Danson Park which has won many Kent awards over the years as you prob know etc + other parts of Kent like the city of Canterbury!!!!

I don't remember which, but a member of the Rolling Stones lived in the place I used to live; and went to the same primary as me. I've since moved away, but I've always found that to be a fun fact :)
