Woodbridge Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Suffolk, and around seven miles northeast of Ipswich, is the town of Woodbridge.
Geographically, Woodbridge is situated adjacent to the River Deben, about 10 miles upstream from the North Sea. On the opposite bank of the river is Sutton Hoo, which is the site of two Anglo-Saxon cemeteries from the 6th and 7th centuries. These held the remains of kings who are believed to have resided in the neighbouring village of Rendlesham about five miles northeast of Woodbridge. Rendlesham was allegedly a thriving settlement between the 5th and 8th centuries before its importance was superseded by Ipswich.
As for Woodbridge itself, the earliest recorded reference dates back to the 10th century, when it was acquired by St Æthelwold, Bishop of Winchester. During the medieval era, Woodbridge began to develop a thriving shipbuilding industry, supplying fighting ships for Edward III and Sir Francis Drake among others. Other industries included rope-making and sail-making.
At the heart of the town is the Church of St Mary the Virgin (seen just after the 9-minute mark). This dates from early 15th century, and is believed to stand on the site of an earlier Anglo-Saxon church. Another notable religious building is the Church of St John (seen just after the 22-minute mark), which dates from the 1840s. Both churches are Anglican, and listed buildings, although of the two, only St Mary's Church is Grade I listed.
In 1515 Thomas Seckford was born in Woodbridge. Seckford became an advisor to Elizabeth I, and a Member of Parliament for Ipswich. He commissioned the construction of various buildings in the town, including Woodbridge School, the Seckford Almshouses and Shire Hall (first seen around the 11-and-a-half minute mark).
In 1859 the railway arrived in Woodbridge courtesy of the East Suffolk Railway. Today, the station is situated on the East Suffolk Line which runs between Ipswich and Lowestoft.
Between 1938 and 1939, local self-taught archaeologist Basil Brown excavated a site at Sutton Hoo, situated on the opposite bank of the River Deben to Woodbridge. It was here, in 1939, that he discovered an Anglo-Saxon burial ship, which came to be known as "one of the most important archaeological discoveries of all time".
Famous people from Woodbridge include musicians Brian Eno and Charlie Simpson (the latter being of Busted fame).
