Madrid's style suits knockout football - greater versatility, more pragmatic and adaptable, more contingency plans - than Barcelona's blanket philosophy (which suits domestic football weekend-on-weekend). And Madrid's midfield (Kroos, Modric and before them Di Maria, Xabi Alonso, Ozil) actually have the best per-90 stats in the CL, and obviously Benzema is one of the European greats and Bale always seemed to turn up when needed, whereas Suarez went off a cliff after 2016 and Neymar isn't a moments player the way Bale was. So I'm not sure they were less talented but Barcelona certainly wasted the prime of the greatest ever player when it came to the CL with their intransigent philosophy.

Pep doesn't even use tiki-tika (I know some would say he never did and Spain was different to his Barcelona and that he's always used width more, but his philosophy has definitely changed and was more static in 2009). Tournament football and league football are almost two different sports, and different players thrive in different contexts. Barcelona's philosophy suits domestic football because it is a blanket philosophy that provides coherence, builds momentum, allows for smooth player rotation of like-for-like, doesn't discriminate against body-type...but lacks variation and Plan B's for a night of must-win knockout football (lack of width and directness, lack athleticism and physicality, lack of aerial and set-piece threats, no focal points, poor on the counter, struggles out-of-possession, predictable). (Note: This is why Giroud becomes "almost as good/effective" as Thierry Henry in knockout football - links play, strong, focal point, aerial and setpiece threat for crosses, acrobatic finisher, an in-built Plan B.) Since the German-led counter-revolution to Spanish possession football in 2011, every team that thrived in Europe (aside from 2015) has been German-managed or the pragmatic antithesis to Barcelona (10-man Chelsea, the two Madrids with Atletico twice sending them out, even pre-CR7 Juve got to more finals, 10-man Inter in 2010 used Simeone-esque side/tactics, while Chelsea and Arsenal were unlucky in 2009 and 11 respectively). This Man City side have more in common physically with the Arsenal Invincibles than that 2009 Barcelona - Haaland, Stones, Dias, Akanji, Rodri, Walker is an athlete, De Bruyne is no push-over, Grealish is built to absorb challenges - and when they played with 4 CBs against Bayern and had 45% possession AT HOME, Pep finally has a side with the versatility to adjust to contingency plans in an evening of knockout football, rather than be sent home by 10-man Inter or Chelsea after two-legs of banging their heads against a wall (or parked bus). Barcelona did waste Messi's prime with an archaic and stubborn philosophy - give Messi the Ramos/Marcelo defence and Madrid midfield triumvirate and sit him behind Bale and Benzema, he'd have more CL titles - but perhaps fewer La Ligas, and it's not entirely fair since prime Ronaldo offered a box-to-box counter + aerial + stamina + wing focal point all in one, though Bale/Modric/Kroos + Klopp's impact (with Heynckes, Rangnick, later Tuchel, etc.) was the game-changer that allowed Madrid to dominate, not Ronaldo suddenly getting better in 2014 since they went out multiple times in his prime and he often stopped scoring after the QFs but Madrid would still win after 2013. After Bayern destroyed them in 2013 and Spain were annihilated by the Netherlands in 2014, that should have been the indication to Barcelona to change philosophy; instead they signed Suarez and Neymar who merely papered over the cracks before Atletico sent them home once again in 2016 - and Barcelona were hammered in every single year thereafter. (Just to emphasise the point, Messi thrived with Argentina when they surrounded him with runners and destroyers, dropping Dybala, Aguero, Lavezzi, Higuain.)
