The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is a space telescope that was launched into low Earth orbit in 1990, and remains in operation. Although not the first space telescope, Hubble is one of the largest and most versatile, and is well known as both a vital research tool and a public relations boon for astronomy. The HST is named after the astronomer Edwin Hubble, and is one of NASA's Great Observatories, along with the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and the Spitzer Space Telescope.
With a 2.4-meter (7.9 ft) mirror, Hubble's four main instruments observe in the near ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared spectra. Hubble's orbit outside the distortion of Earth's atmosphere allows it to take extremely high-resolution images, with substantially lower background light than ground-based telescopes. Hubble has recorded some of the most detailed visible light images ever, allowing a deep view into space and time. Many Hubble observations have led to breakthroughs in astrophysics, such as accurately determining the rate of expansion of the universe.
The HST was built by the United States space agency NASA, with contributions from the European Space Agency. The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) selects Hubble's targets and processes the resulting data, while the Goddard Space Flight Center controls the spacecraft.
Space telescopes were proposed as early as 1923. Hubble was funded in the 1970s, with a proposed launch in 1983, but the project was beset by technical delays, budget problems, and the Challenger disaster (1986). When finally launched in 1990, Hubble's main mirror was found to have been ground incorrectly, compromising the telescope's capabilities. The optics were corrected to their intended quality by a servicing mission in 1993.
Hubble is the only telescope designed to be serviced in space by astronauts. After launch by Space Shuttle Discovery in 1990, four subsequent Space Shuttle missions repaired, upgraded, and replaced systems on the telescope. A fifth mission was canceled on safety grounds following the Columbia disaster (2003). However, after spirited public discussion, NASA administrator Mike Griffin approved one final servicing mission, completed in 2009. The telescope is operating as of 2016, and could last until 2030-2040. Its scientific successor, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), is scheduled for launch in 2018.

That would be the scariest and most dangerous journey ever lol. These photos don't show the true scale of the universe. Could you imagine speeding towards a star, watching it get bigger and brighter every second. Until you realise that this star is millions and millions of times bigger than the earth and we know how big that is.

The people at Nasa do incredible work. Yes, some of these images are NOT from Hubble, and YES, they are enhanced, but only based on the material seen that the human eye can NOT see. Our atmosphere does the same thing as those who enhanced the images.....what would everything look like without the atmosphere we have? Fighter pilots use infrared. Those images are not fake. They are there....but the pilots are utilizing technology that allows human beings to see more than what we would see with just our "relatively" weak vision. "Visible Light", occupies something like 7/200,000ths of the electromagnetic spectrum. So when scientists use the means developed to detect other types of light, be it infrared, it allows them to identify the material, and then assign a color to it. If you prefer to see only what the visible light is, those photos exist....but we can see through those dust clouds if we don't only rely on our weak vision. Hell, the "Great Human Race" has evolved to where we can use reason.....but our senses really diminished in the process. I doubt we ever saw as good as a cat in the dark, and surely had no reason to see what a bird of prey can see from the sky.....what good would it do a human being to be able to see a rabbit a mile away? So NASA uses many other waves on the spectrum to see through things, to judge depth and distance, etc, and then converts all of these images back to visible light, so we can see what we would see, if we could, so we can understand the images better. There are quite a few good sites where people can learn more about the electromagnetic spectrum, and also, many images on the internet as well as videos on youtube if you prefer the visual to reading. These NASA images were the reason I started reading about the ES and watching videos. I only have a high school education, but enjoy learning more now than I did as a kid, like most of us, and now as I approach 60, my dreams of hitting the mega-million lottery so I can have a harem of beautiful women of every different size, shape, color and nationality has been replaced with a fantasy of going back to school full time for the remainder of my life. Education is wasted on adolescents. I agree with Plato, and believe people would get a much better education if they take those years off from school, and go back when they reach 20 years old, when they have sowed many of their wild oats, and are mature enough to not be as concerned with image, using school for learning instead of getting lots of sex....or more honestly, lying about getting lots of sex. lol

Nevertheless it might become a great advantage to our species if we directly improve the range and scope of our senses, especially eyesight. As well, I agree with your insight attributed to Plato, I was curious and eager to learn until about the age of 15 where the burden of dreary schoolwork outweighed the motivation to learn at any institution. Thankfully, I obtained information elsewhere. When I got to the age of 23, I regained my love of learning and eventually learned electronics, computer programming and a rudimentary understanding of quantum and particle physics.

The media is not the main part of the message. In the 19th century photographic images were essentially imprinted refracted light mediated by silver plates. The point is that in classical photography there is no information processing mediation only direct transference of the light bearing aspect of reality.

Some light you see from the nebulas aren't invisible though. If you look at the Orion Nebula through a reasonably powerful telescope you can see colour. Faint bits of red, blue and purple (among others). The more powerful the telescope, the more colour you can see.

A finely fashioned work of art surely necessitates an artist. The Maker of the world possesses infinite beauty and perfection.Since things exist and they are full of art, they surely have a Maker. (The Twenty-Sixth Word) "We are the art of One Who can make this entire world of ours as easily and simply as He created us."
