Fun fact: at the time of this play the Seahawks oc was Darrell bevel. The same exact man who was the Vikings oc when Bret Favre threw an interception on the 2nd to last play of regulation against the New Orleans Saints in the 2009 NFC championship game. In 2015 he had marshawn lynch and in 2009 he had Adrian Peterson. Both were arguably the best players at the RB position at the time.

Lynch was already beat up heading into that season. His back was in bad shape from all the times that they did run it from the 1 lol. Charles Clay wasn’t a scheme fit, so no way they sign him. Maybe they go after Jordan Cameron, or another redzone target like Kenny Britt. And if they kept their 1st, they wouldn’t have drafted someone like Morse. Tom Cable still thought he could draft tough, athletic guys in the mid rounds and develop them. Instead they probably draft TJ Yeldon, or Dorial Green-Beckham. DGB would have still been a flop, but Yeldon might have flourished behind Lynch. That was still a nice draft snagging Frank Clark at 63 and Tyler Lockett at 69.

Malcolm Butler got the pick at the Goal Line and was pushed down at the 1-Yard line. With 20 seconds left the Patriots Qb Kneel would have given the Seahawks a safety making the score 28-26. From there the Seahawks would have gotten the punt from the safety and based off of Ryan Allen’s average punt yards being around 46 yards and the Seahawks averaging about 7 to 8 yards it would have put the Seahawks anywhere from the Patriots 40 yard line to the 35 with 1 time out left. That would have been about a 40 yard field goal. Hauschka was 11 out of 17 on field goals 40 yards and above. He had around a 64% chance of making the kick creating the dynasty of Boom. Or the Seahawks could have called one more play where after the goal line interception they would have more than likely gave the ball to beast mode. Considering there would only be about 10 seconds left and the Patriots wouldn’t risk a Hail Mary they would have had a three man rush which beast mode would have more than likely burst through for enough yardage for the Seahawks to have a safe field goal from around the 30. Hauschka has a perfect record from the 30 in the 2014-2015 season. This kick would have given the Seahawks a 29-28 lead and the Patriots no time to respond. This is the craziest way Seattle could have won after the pick. All this could have potentially happened if the Seahawks hadn’t had an offsides at the 1 Yard line 😬

They should have used Lynch as a decoy and have Wilson run it in, a more safer bet than passing the ball. Either way it should serve a lesson that when a near miraculous catch happened, it doesn't guarantee anything. People seem to have forgotten that catch that occurred prior to the flag that pushed the Seahawks offense closer to the line which sets up the deciding play. The reason it was forgotten is that in the end it doesn't matter as you know what happened. You know what particular play I was referring to as the Pats had experienced that against them some years before that. Then another one few years later in their favor.

Does anyone remember the clock? After Lynch was stopped at the one, Seattle used a timeout. They had one left and 25 seconds. There was no way to run three times because they didn't have enough time. If they ran it on second and didn't get in, they would have used their last timeout and it's third down with like 18 seconds. If they ran again and don't get in, time expires before they can get back on the line of scrimmage and snap the ball...and they lose...and leave an unused down on the table. Or they could pass on second down - stopping the clock and saving their last timeout if Wilson throws an incompletion. Then they could have run on third AND fourth down if necessary because they saved that timeout. Carroll reasoned that passing on either second or third down would guarantee they get to use all four downs if necessary. Calling a pass play on second down wasn't a bad call, especially since Belichick left his goal line defense in. Calling a pass play that Belichick was ready for was a bad call.
@forman2083 ай бұрын
I don't have a problem with them passing, it's the play they ran, a quick slant into the middle of the field to a no name receiver that was indefensibly stupid.
@iamu90066 жыл бұрын
Marshawn Lynch averaged 3 yards after contact that year. Based on this stat alone a defense would typically have to hit Lynch about 2 yards behind the line of scrimmage (give 1 yard less for space to gain running momentum) to keep him out of the end zone. That's enough facts for me to know what play should've been called.

Iam U Not when they’re run committing (basically sending 8+ guys down the middle) that’s what makes this crazy because passing the ball *in my opinion* was the better option cause literally EVERYONE was expecting that run it’s just Malcolm Butler spent every second of his life studying that play until he perfected it and it finally worked in his favor when it mattered the most! Point being he wasn’t supposed to be there and he wasn’t supposed to get that INT, but they picked the wrong play cause that guy was waiting ALL DAY for it...
@iamu90066 жыл бұрын
@@SldOnEmWithDa45 So in your opinion they called the right play even though the outcome was a superbowl loss. Malcom Butler wasn't suppose to be there yet he was there. Your argument has zero logic and holds no water.

As a Seahawks fan I've seen this play over and over and there is something that people routinely overlook...Lynch's stats in goalline situations. That season Lynch was 2 of 7 on goalline attempts of two yards or less, the other 5 times he was stuffed for a loss or he fumbled. Where the play broke down was Kearse/Browner matchup, Kearse was suppose to shed Browner and pick up Butler so Lockette would get the easy TD...but that didn't happen. Hindsight is 20/20, while I agree they should have ran the ball I know why they didn't.

Here’s the thing, these videos always ignore the context of the situation. Number 1 is timing. The Seahawks had limited time and one timeout. If they pass the ball, they are almost guaranteed a touchdown or an incompletion, an incompletion stops the clock, allowing two more run plays. If you only call run plays, you don’t have time for three total plays. Number 2: Marshawn’s inefficacy on the goal line. People talk about how dominant Lynch was that season, but ignore that he was atrocious in goal line situations. Number 3: I don’t remember the exact statistics, but I think goal line passes had been attempted something like 150 times that season with about 100 incompletions and 50 TDs, with 0 interceptions. 0 interceptions. Literally the only goal line int of the season was at the end of the Super Bowl. You also have the fact that since so many people expected a run, that a pass might catch the Pats off guard (except that they have Belichick as coach, and that doesn’t happen to him). It was a good call, just poorly executed and perfectly defended. Wilson threw the ball a bit behind and Lockett didn’t really try to secure the ball since he didn’t know that he was being hit.

The Green Samurai SI did that in their “What If” issue last year... -Brady/Brees is so epic, people forget about Brady/Manning -Saban never leaves the Dolphins for Alabama - While New Orleans lost their team, they can take solace in two things: the San Antonio Saints perpetually suck, and LSU rules college football Oh, and the collection of alternate stories also included three or four famous second-guesses that would NOT have gone differently, one of which was “If the Seahawks had run the ball...Beast Moron was no beast in short yardage, the Patriots would’ve stuffed him”.

I understand there was some methodology behind it: - run was expected - would have been better to have incomplete pass and stop the clock than fail the run and have the clock still running - apparently that exact play had worked a dream about 4 times in that game BUT... ...Shoulda run it. It would be San Francisco vs New England in the Super Bowl with the 49ers beating the Patriots 31-27. Ray Lewis doesn’t get his second ring and Joe Flacco isn’t considered a Elite QB. Jim Harbaugh is still coach for the 49ers as well as Colin Kapernick being the starter. Jimmy Garropollo is still a backup to Tom Brady and doesn’t get traded. Kyle Shanahan is still the Offensive Coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons which still goes 10-6 in the 2017 Season. In the Divisional Round against the Philadelphia Eagles on 2nd and goal the Falcons call a run play which results in Devonta Freeman running it in for a Touchdown resulting in the Falcons going against the Vikings in the NFC Championship with the score being 27-20 in favor of the Vikings. Nick Foles doesn’t go on the Miracle run to the Super Bowl and the Eagles still have 0 SB Rings. The Vikings go on to play in Super Bowl 51 at their home stadium with them winning 20-19 finally achieving their first Super Bowl victory. In the draft the Patriots select Mike Hughes to replace Malcolm Butler.

I get the idea Carroll called a pass play because of that Texas-USC game. USC had a chance to win the game if they could convert a 4th-and-2. They handed it off to their power back, Lendale White, who Texas hadn't stopped all night. He got stuffed, and Vince Young led Texas on the game-winning drive. Carroll might've thought, "I'm not gonna be so predictable this time," when he decided to throw it. Immediately after the game, he compared the loss to Texas.

Literally 0% chance he was thinking about a college game from 9 years ago when making that decision. Just the ideas fans have sometimes, like this coach in the final minute of the Super Bowl is going to think of ridiculous shit like that lol
