You can also depressurize the fuel line by removing the fuel pump solenoid. Remove the solenoid under hood.. start the 4 runner until she dies.. this uses up the fuel in line and relieves pressure. I have done this many times on my 06 sport.

Love your channel...I changed mine at 529k miles. It was actually clean!! I now have 591300 miles not km but miles on the clock now. I disconnected the battery and fuse. Not much fuel leaked

I bought my 97 runner with 265K mi on it and i had no idea when the fuel filter was replaced. I replaced it and dumped the old filter and the stuff that came out of that end of was horrendous. Glad I replaced it.

Why not just pull the efi fuse and crank to depressurize?

Actually if you leave it pressurized any trash in the rear of the fuel line before the filter will get pushed out if you unscrew the rear fuel filter line nut first. Messy yes yet be away from anything that could ignite the spilliage and I do it outside away from any other vehicles. After replacing the fuel filter I will take a hack saw to cut open and remove the paper element for inspection. Some gas stations have contaminated underground tanks that have old filters and water separators. Merry Christmas

It would be much simpler to just remove the fuel pump relay than disassembly of the rear seat and carpet!
